It's two weeks now since I had my abortion done. There's still a blood but not that much as the first week after the surgery. Recently I had sex with my boyfriend, what am I suppose to do? We didn't use any condom or contraceptive at all. But I still feel normal. Any advice??

Hi,

As far as I have heard, it's advised to wait for four to seven days after taking the abortion pill (misoprostol?). You may bleed something like two weeks but you can still have sex at the time your provider tells you it's OK. Though mind you, you'll want to get birth control of some sort ASAP because obviously you can get pregnant again.

I think you have to wait a while longer to have sex again after a surgical abortion just because of the increased risk of infection and so on, but I am not sure about this actually.

I have recently had a surgical abortion, I'm in England, and my healthcare provider didn't tell me when it was OK to have sex again. I looked it up on the NHS website and it said that you can have sex straight away if you feel comfortable doing so. But also, that you might want to wait until you have stopped bleeding. This went on roughly 2 1/2 for me. Honestly, I was not in the mood. But everybody is different. I didn't feel comfortable with my body and emotionally able to have sex again, cuddling up to my boyfriend was just what I needed. I just advise you to pay attention to how you feel and only do what you feel comfortable with.

Best of luck.

Maybe you should check in with your healthcare provider, and ask if everything is OK. It is not that unusual to still be bleeding three weeks after but it is on the long side already. If you are having any signs of infection such as painful and tender abdomen, fever, foul smelling discharge, then do not ignore this and do go to your provider for a consultation.

If everything is OK, I'd suggest to just take it easy a while and focus on your physical and emotional health. Eat well, sleep enough, watch some movies, drink some hot chocolate, etc. You should be fine in a while hopefully.

Remember that every woman is different. It is normal for bleeding to peek three or four days after an abortion and then to continue for around 2 1/2 weeks, but some women do bleed for three or four weeks without there being a complication. Complications following abortion are very rare. If bleeding is so heavy that you soak a maxi pad once every hour for hours on end though, that's something to go in for. Basically, if you are worried, calling the clinic who provided the abortion is always OK. They're used to that and it's better to be safe than sorry.

I was advised not to have sex for a week after my abortion and I listened to their advice because they explained that this was because of the risk of infection. I definitely did not want an infection. I wanted to conceive, but a few years or more later because I was too young and still in college at the time, plus the father was not the right person for me. Aftercare protocols are there for a reason and it is important that you follow them for your own health and to protect your reproductive system. If you have any questions it is really best to address them to your doctor, or a counselor.
