Not to hijack the thread, but I too have wanted to come off these diphen pills. I don't take nearly as many as some of you here (I only take 2 every 12-24 hrs, if any more I get sick), but I've been taking this amount for almost 3 years straight. I've tried 'script sleeping meds (like Ambien, Lunesta) but their side effects are even worse. (You wanna trip? Take some Ambien, then take some more) I want to stop taking them altogether, but I suffer from a severe case of restless leg syndrome which (for those that have it, know well) is extremely difficult to get any sleep with. Lately they've been causing some really nasty headaches and stomach pains. Of course, for over anxious people like me, that immediately starts to feel like a stroke or ulcer comin' on. I suppose the only way to get off these, really, is to take yourself down slowly, much like any other addiction...but man, is it hard!

I used to take it recreationally. Besides the previous symptoms, my short term memory wasn't there. I wasn't there. I have hbp and felt sometimes like i was on the verge of a heart attack. My left arm went numb and anxiety peaked. I felt depressed all the time, and the high was all i looked forward to. After taking 10-20 pills, i would eat, and then 5 mins later i had a 30 minute high. The 8 hours after that were horrible.

If you have restless leg syndrome, what the f**k? No frikkin way that sh*t exists.

Also, if you want to get high, find some weed. You can't od. I've smoked myself sober. You might stuff and drown yourself with carrots and gatorade.

I've taken well over a gram of diphenhydramine on multiple occasions and I'm fine so you're most likely safe.

I must say this topic really opened my eyes. I recently went through rehab for alcohol abuse but I have been taking 200 - 500 mg a night to help me sleep. It usually takes an hour to kick in and I get a buzz for about half hour and then if I stay up I get extremely paranoid. When I get up the next day I am no longer paranoid but admittedly irritable.
I assumed if it was sold without a prescription that it couldn't be that bad. I realize I am now abusing this drug and I will have to stay away from all drugs unless directed by a M.D. Male/220/5'11

I'm a full blown insomniac. I usually take 6 sleep-aid pills in which the active ingredient is, obviously, dyphenhydramine. I always drink a half pint of vodka with it, as I find this is a nice little balance. I wake up without too much of a hangover, and I actually get sleep. I haven't seen any adverse side effects.... yet.

I am 14 and was 14 when i first experimented with high levels of diphenhydramine HCI. Used to do it regularly. 400mg is the most I've personally ever taken. Never OD'ed. In large amounts it is considered a deleriant, a recreational drug in which the user finds himself in a state of stupor and confusion, assiciated with hallucinations. Not very fun. im pretty sure 100mg won't kill you.

To anyone taking these pills for sleep problems..stop because it is definitely not healthy and this post proves so seeing that all these people chose these pills to attempt to commit suicide.

I have the only and best solution for anyone suffering from severe insomnia or some kind of problem that prevents them from sleeping:

Smoke some marijuana, weed, herb. Healthiest form of sleep medication. Basically get yourself a vaporizer and take a couple of hits (for those of you afraid of the side effects, if you only take at most 2 hits it will be enough to put you to sleep right away and not feel the other effects)

Please trust that this is truly the only and safest way to help with sleep problems or pain problems that cause lack of sleep.

Biggest side effect of longterm use: temporary loss of short-term memory.

Hope this helps.

I overdosed a few months back on tylenol p.m. at the Walmart i used to work at. That's 1200 m.g. of benedryl. I don't remember getting to the hospital. I ended up having a heart attack and was in a coma for four days. The nurses said i was lucky to be alive. I weigh 130 lbs. and was 19 at the time.

I'm sorry this is just ridiculous, it's not dangerous, even at 300-400mg, just do the research

Usual Adult Dose for Extrapyramidal Reaction:

Parenteral: 10 to 50 mg IV or IM as needed. May increase dose to 100 mg if required. Maximum daily dose 400 mg.

Oral: 25 to 50 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours.

Usual Adult Dose for Insomnia:

25 to 50 mg orally at bedtime.

Usual Adult Dose for Motion Sickness:

Parenteral: 10 to 50 mg IV or IM as needed. May increase dose to 100 mg if required. Maximum daily dose 400 mg.

Oral: 25 to 50 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours. Administer first dose 30 minutes before exposure to motion and repeat before meals and upon retiring for the duration of the journey.

Usual Adult Dose for Cough:

25 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 150 mg per day.

Usual Adult Dose for Cold Symptoms:

25 to 50 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed, not to exceed 300 mg/24 hours.

Usual Adult Dose for Pruritus:

25 to 50 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed, not to exceed 300 mg/24 hours.

if doctors prescribe 150mg for motion sickness, I doubt 100mg is even going to be adverse in the smallest way.

okay seriously.. i took 35 last night which were 50mg each. do not do it. i have two friends in the hospital right now on the 5th floor because of it. one of them had their stomach pumped. not a nice thing to think about when its your good friend. he's better now but overdosing on this drug is fatal, stupid, idiotic, and just plain dumb.

the answer your looking for is roughly 700 milligrams.

I work for the National Poisons Information service in the UK. The advice we have is following:

Children or adults who have accidentally ingested less than 5 mg/kg
and have no symptoms do not need referral to hospital.

Children or adults who have recently ingested 5 mg/kg or more and those who have taken deliberate overdoses should be referred.

For an average 70kg adult, then, 350 mg would be enough to be referred to A&E. We take "overdose" to mean any more than a therapeutic amount. We use the BNF, and if the amount taken is more than the recommended amount, then it is an OD.
