I have been using biofeedback with the heartmath software running on a PC. After much searching I have yet to find any information about the desired range of HRV. What are the minimum and maximum ranges that one should have?

I am 58 years old with rather good cardio vascular health. When I emply deep breathing and synchronize with the rate indicator to achive coherence, the variability increases significantly. The range is generally from mid 50s to mid 80s. If I get a particularily relaxing exhale, the min will drop down to into the 40s, somtimes into the low 40s. This particular device has problems tracking my heart rate when it is low so I don't really get a good reading on the extremes.

What ranges should I expect and/or strive for. What are the minimum and maximum ranges and what does it mean if they are not reached or exceeded respectfully.

Thanks for your time.
Do not use heartmath software. It is quite old software for HRV. I'd highly recommend to use Heart Wizard . It tells you exactly how to breathe, how good is your heart rate is, displays your health information and tracks health changes. Do not need to remember and analyze numbers - you'll get your health data, normalize blood pressure etc. Or you can use Inner Balance Scan from for the same purpose.

I'm a medical student from Stanford, we use the above products in your University for research.

Thanks,
Alex

I agree with what Alex has posted. I know that the software that you are using is quite old. As for the acceptable ranges, it really does vary from person to person. It sounds to me like you are actually within the acceptable ranges for men your age, and in fact it sounds to me like you've got excellent heart health. I'm jealous! I don't think that I have ever gotten myself into the 40s and I am younger than you are. Let us know how things go with your HRV!

Please try the android application called "stress releaser". It is first HRV meditation application without any hardware attachment.
