Spell properly? I have noticed that people in their pre-teens tend to use abbreviations such as "OMG" and "WTF" and even though they are most likely skilled enough to spell properly, they don't. It does save time, writing using slangs and incorrect spelling/grammar, but of course, there really is no need, as when you learn how to type faster, you will not need to use slangs.
