I have a friend who was prescribed oxicontin for pain and I did some research for her and found out it was oxicodone in a slow release form. How does this work exactly? If she takes one 40 mg tablet, how many miligrams is she getting when she first takes the pill? Then slow release means additional milligrams are released slowly, so my question is how often, how many, and for how long are additional milligrams released?

In more basic terms how long is one slow release tablet supposed to last? I know Vicodin, Delated, Norco, and Vicodin ES can be taken every 4-6 hours, so is oxicontin typically prescribed the same way?

My friend does not know I am looking into this medication yet and I don't know what she is prescribed to take so I am just curious as to what the usual dosage is of slow release oxicontin
