Hello World

I am a 38 year old woman, I confirmed 2 weeks ago that I am pregnant,  15 weeks so I thought.  Last monthly was 10/12/2012.  When I had the scan done it showed NO BABY, but I was told that I am about 4 weeks and NOT 15 weeks.

Can somebody explain this to me?  I have been told that it has something to do with ovulation...but im afraid that I am not 100% sure of this.  2 years ago I had the same kind of thing happen to me, I also thought that I was about 15 weeks and it turned out that I was again 4 weeks.  I am sad to say that my little bundle of joy did not make it.  What kind of things can I do to help this little bundle grow without problems?  My only child is now 18 years of age, so I am sure that my above question is very much understandable:-D

Thank You world xxx

Dear Kim

I can understand your concerns, but would you fill in some more details please?

"I confirmed 2 weeks ago that I am pregnant" That is 10th April? How did you confirm that? Pregnancy test or the scan to which you subsequently refer?

"15 weeks so I thought." Why did you only confirm 2 weeks ago?

"Last monthly was 10/12/2012"  I assume it started 10th Dec (not 12th Oct). What is your cycle length (typically 28 days)?

"When I had the scan done" When was the scan done?

"it showed NO BABY" What did it show?

"I was told that I am about 4 weeks and NOT 15 weeks." 10th April is 17 weeks since your LMP.

"Can somebody explain this to me? I have been told that it has something to do with ovulation" LMP start is the date usually used to calculate the number of weeks pregnant as it is the only known date. Ovulation often occurs 2 weeks after LMP start, so you expected to be 15 weeks pregnant but you would have been assessed as being 17 weeks in the normal course of events; this clearly isn't!

"2 years ago I had the same kind of thing happen to me, I also thought that I was about 15 weeks and it turned out that I was again 4 weeks." What could be happening is that you are miscarrying early on and getting pregnant again (assuming you are having frequent sexual intercourse).

"I am sad to say that my little bundle of joy did not make it." At how many weeks did that loss occur?

"What kind of things can I do to help this little bundle grow without problems?" That depends on the cause of the miscarriages. Was it rhesus factor incompatibility? Is your womb-lining too thin? What has your ob/gyn suggested?

I hope this helps as a start

Wow...what an amazing reply I got back...thank you so much! Well to try and answer all the questions without missing out any. 1) I confirmed this by doing two home preggie tests and then 1 at a clinic and then the other at the hospital. With this I also told after being measured by a nurse at the clinic, that I was about 15 weeks pregnant. To me that did sound right as I know that you do not count the first 2 weeks of being pregnant. 2) I have been doing home tests every month from the first period I had missed (January 2012) all showed up negative. It was about 2 weeks ago (10th April) that my gut feeling said go out and buy another test...positive!!! 3) My last period was the 10 Dec to the 14th Dec. Yes my cycle is 28 days... My scan was done yesterday 23/04/13. It shows that there is no ways I could have been 15 weeks pregnant, but it did indicate that there is a pregnancy (an early pregnancy) They could not give more information on this as it was told to me that I will have to see a Dr to have an internal done, but at the same time the pregnancy was picked up at such an early stage that there would not be any heartbeat yet. The last pregnancy (2 years ago) was picked up at 4 weeks, by 6 weeks it had started to show on the monitor and by the 8th week...there was no sign of life and I went ahead with a D&C. You asked me what my ob has suggested...well here is the thing! After having the scan done I then had to wait 5 hours to see the Dr, and as I was going in to see her, she had to leave for an emergency...up till now I have no proper Dr look at me...I have however contacted my gynie that dealt with me 2 years ago, the only time that he can see me is on the 23 May...I feel that maybe this is good as it will give this little one time to grow and I pray by then we should see life!

Dear Kim
I am sorry to hear that you have probably lost your baby. Does this mean that you can get an earlier consultation? Where do you live?
I hope that on your visit to your doctor you will be given some help. Perhaps something to help strengthen your womb lining. At least you can give some clear data to your doctor concerning when the miscarriage seems ti occur.
Please let me know what happens after your consultation.
Best wishes

Hi there...

Well no, I wont be able to see the gynie at a early stage because of this...he is soooooooo fully booked. I can however go to a state hospital and have a D&C done...for now I am at home, I pray that I will be able to have nature do what it does best...but if it gets to a stage that I cannot not cope...I will go to the hospital.

Stupid question and one that I should know the answer to, you mention the womb lining...could that be my problem do you think?

Dear Kim

Yes, I think that it could be.

Having a healthy endometrium is an important part of conception. Your doctor could recommend a biopsy of your uterine lining to define the quality of your uterine lining. This will tell your doctor if your uterine lining is capable of sustaining a pregnancy. You may need treatment with hormones to supplement your uterine lining. This can probably be done by your doctor or nurse practitioner. It is often done one to three days before your period is expected, when your uterus should be thick and full of nutrients designed to sustain a pregnancy.

No, it's not a stupid question!!

Hope this helps

Yes thank you...

I woke up this morning with many questions being thrown at God...but not once did I thank him for allowing our paths to cross...I am so ashamed of myself.

I will make sure that I follow up on your advise...and who knows...we may very well try again

Thank you
