Going to the gym is great idea and it should help you lose weight and build lean muscle.  If you are a beginner my advice is take it slow and exercise for 10 to 20 minutes for the first week (3 days or so).  Then gradually increase your exercise routine to 30 minutes and by the third week see if you can go for an hour.  If you don't know what kind of exercise you want to do, I suggest you try all the equipment that they have.  See which pieces of equipment you feel most comfortable with and try to develop a routine from there.  Try to exercise all parts of the body
