Hello all,

I just found out today that I have to get my tonsils out and I'm really scared. I'm 34 years old and I've read the other blogs and I have to tell you. I hate taking medicine and my pain level is extremely low. What's the biggest thing I have to worry about?
Hi Tenika

Not sure if this will still be relevant to you as your post was back in January. I was 29 when I has my tonsils out last year and I was the same as you and read loads of posts by other people and it really scared me too. Now that I've had the op and survivied, it makes me really mad that people post on here with their bad experiences and terrify future patients. Fine if you have something useful to offer but a lot of them are just moaning about the pain. My bf banned me from reading these as I got into such a state and he pointed out if they were in so much agony would they really be able to spend time writing about it?

Anyway, my point is, try not to feel discouraged about what has happened to other people. As with all surgery there is a small chance of complications but they are small. Most people do just fine.

I would say just make sure you eat and drink as soon as you come round from the anasthetic as this helps remove the scabs and keeps your throat muscles working. The pain will be worse if you avoid eating and drinking. Also, take it easy and don't overdo it. I was unbelievably tired and slept constantly.

I hope it goes ok for you
