I have been having similar symptoms. My dentist says i need a root canal. She has also sent me to 2 specialists for that and my impacted wisdom tooth. She has also said that i could have an ear infection. It is very frustrating because pain killers are not working for very long. I have been told to get the root canal and if that doesn't work i will then have to have my impacted wisdom tooth removed. It is completely in the jaw bone and considered a high risk surgery because it is lying on a facial nerve. I don't want to go through with the root canal and then find out i still have to have the tooth removed. very frustratring and painful.

I have had the same exact problem... I saw my dentist and it IS from an impacted wisdom tooth. Turns out I have a Soft Tissue Impaction, where a portion of my tooth has erupted through my gum, but the other part of my tooth will not come thorough. Apparently, from what he says, when you have only part of your tooth come through it creates an opening for debris and bacteria to enter in and lodge in under the gum around the portion of the tooth that is still covered. This is turn in to an abscess, cyst or cause infection... The infection is what's causing the swelling, the pain and the swollen lymph nodes... Your lymph nodes swell in an attempt to drain the infection... My suggestion is get it taken care of ASAP, AT LEAST the infection, if can spread to your jaw bone and then worst case, they'll have to remove portions of bone.... And God forbid the infection spread to your blood stream and become deadly!!

Just got back from having my two lower wisdoms out. He knocked me out. Didn't feel a thing. Woke up in a haze but no pain. Now the pain is starting to set in, but still bearable. One broke through sideways aiming towards the front of the mouth. It created a gap between the top of it, and the side of the last molar where food always got stuck. The other was on my left side and looked just fine on the x-ray, just way under the gum. I'm 33 already. So here I am in pain, reading about it, and everyone is saying something about neck pain. I didn't have neck PAIN, but what I did have was a cramping neck muscle on the left side whenever I would lift my left arm and turn my head left. Relevant? I don't know, but I didn't want someone out there to feel as if they were the only one. Mine wasn't a pain, though a little painful, it was more of a cramp where the muscle kinda seizes and needs to be rubbed out IMMEDIATELY. And the throbbing is starting to grow...

I too also have a wisdom tooth growing in at the very back of my molars on the bottom left side of my mouth. The weird thing though is that its so inflamed to the point where i can't even chew my food or close my teeth together entirely. It really hurts.

I'm going in for a dentist appointment next week but I feel like I should get it checked as soon as possible.

I'm not sure if its a wisdom tooth yet or what? But I was telling my friends about it and some even looked inside my mouth and they told me it might be it. So hopefully when I got for a check up and x-ray they'll pull it out.

I just really want it to go away. I do feel some of the symptoms listed on here. Although its more a neck cramp than a soreness but that's probably due to the fact that I can't close my mouth and its starting to get sore. I'm not feeling the ear pains yet though. Maybe that'll come in later.

A hint of advice for anyone out there who has theirs just starting to grow and its not painful yet. Talk to your dentist and see if you can already remove it. I knew I should have had them removed a year ago when they first started to give me pain. Foolish me decided to not worry about them after a week that they've stopped hurting. Now one year later, they're back and it hurts 20x more than last year!

Great to know the symptoms I'm experiencing are shared by all! :D

Major jaw pains so went to dentists today for some xrays and got a cleaning as well. I've got a soft tissue impaction on my left lower wisdom tooth which is partially erupted. The front section of the tooth is exposed but the back section is covered by a gum flap and is pressing vertically into the jaw bone. I ignored it for years since the pain would come and go away after a few days. Well this time it came with a vengance and isn't going anywhere!

Symptoms are stiff jaw, swollen sensitive gums (where the tooth hits the bone), head aches, lymphnode swelling, difficult chewing/swallowing and sometimes a strong pain in my neck below my ear. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night due to the pain and it won't go away until it's medicated with Tylenol or Advil. Hope to have the damned things out early next week!

I STRONGLY second the previous poster's following suggestion. If your dentists says it will need to come out, take them out ASAP! NO BS! The pain is extremely distracting and can cause a whole range of other medical and mental problems. DO IT! Don't be a stupid procrastinating wuss like me and put it off. ESPECIALLY do it soon if you know you're currently insured but not certain about your future status. The only thing worse than the pain in your jaw, neck and face from an impacted tooth is also another pain in your pocket book.

DO IT! DO IT NOW!

Hi

I think my impacted wisdom teeth have affected me for 13 years. I have my right upper wisdom tooth fully grown backwards through bone in my upper mouth. When i was a kid my dentist told me i had high pain tolerance which was a good and bad thing and i guess he was right.

The pain comes when tired, or when emotionally i have been through a rough patch. my body stays strong while i deal with that then the right side nerve sh*t sets in. used to think it was tension. ear, temple, neck, glands, all the pressure points down right side of body. I rub natural menthor/camphor oil on it to ease it. itcomes in bursts about every three months or so and its hard to do much / sleep when it comes. in between i do yoga which seems to help keep things balanced.

34 now. pain started kicking in about 5 days ago for the first time in 6 months. only now it's worse than ever. feels dehabilitating. panadol i had to take for the first time to kill the pain. right hand seems to be hanging feebly.

i went to the dentisi a couple of years back in china ( i can't even think of affording one in nz) and he took an x-ray - said come back when it breaks through the gum and then we can remove it. right. like growing backwards it can break through the gum. so now in week 10/12 of a working holiday in vietnam, i'm taking a day off work tomorrow and going to check out the expat clinics around saigon. cause they speak english, are good, and much cheaper.

i also heard thailand and india are fantastic for great dental care, amazing prices and service with a smile.

good luck everyone. don't be scared by the wisdom teeth.

Similar to the other stories listed, i've known I had impacted wisdom teeth for years now, but they never really caused a problem - even when they breached the gum partially. But seemingly out of nowhere starting a few days ago the pain has been TERRIBLE. Lower and upper jaw hurts, pounding headache, and intense muscle cramping in my neck. And to top it off i have to wait a week for the oral surgeon to be available.

Get them taken out as soon as you know that they will eventually be a problem to you. Getting to sleep last was near impossible.

Hi,

Dental health is really important. It's one way of having a positive outlook
in life. Keeping clean is just great, it's one way to prevent dental hygiene
problems from occurring and from getting worst. We should take this matter
seriously and not take this for granted. So There is no need to worry, Should
consult with your dentist and follow what your doctor said to you.

This seems to be the only live discussion of wisdom teeth issues on the internet - which I find odd as it is so old, yet surely there are hundreds of people right now in all sorts of pain.

Money has prevented me from having my wisdom teeth sorted out. I had one removed a couple of years ago by queueing up at the emergency hospital first thing in the morning, crying with the pain (like others have said, unable to move jaw, ear and throat pain, flu symptoms - feeling awful) . That was one of two that had broken through the skin - the other two are still under the gum (I'm 33).

One of the under the gum teeth is now causing me major issues. It has on and off for years, but it has been consistently annoying for several weeks now (although not the intense making-me-cry pain that might justify a hospital fixing it). I would go to the dentist, but can't afford it. I am trying to save though.

I have a main question though, and would welcome others thoughts on all this. Have you noticed any emotional changes around the time of wisdom teeth issues? When my teeth are causing me problems, I have a range of symptoms which tend to make me feel like I have the flu (phlegmy, run down, fatigued, achey, sore throat, sharp headaches, etc), but most bothersome of all is a general irritableness, and heightened emotions. I have many days where I just want to cry (and it doesn't seem to relate to any good out-in-the-world reason for crying). It's just how I feel. More generally, I feel quite miserable. It comes and goes with the other tooth related issues. So, my question is whether any one else in the big wide world has noticed anything like this. I'm sure it's all related....

I'm having a lot of the same symptoms. I'm 19, and going to get my wisdom teeth out in May -- I'd like to be put under for it, but I don't have the money, so I'm absolutely terrified -- because they're causing me so much pain. Sore jaws, neck pain, and a low fever that's probably stress-related. They're all four partial bony impactions, none are poking through the gums, and I don't think any of them are infected. I'm still miserable, though; it's making me irritable and weepy. Even my allergies seem worse than usual.

Can't wait for this to be over. :C

Hi! I just got my wisdom teeth out and I don't have headaches or a sore neck or still jaw anymore. It definitely helped. Just be careful that when you get your wisdom teeth out that you take care of the teeth beside them. I had an infection and though it was from my wisdom teeth but actually it was from the tooth beside it. With the tooth beside it being infected, it could have caused my wisdom tooth to become infected even though it was still impacted. Luckily it didn't get infected though. I got my teeth out about 10 days ago and had stitches on the top and bottom but the bottom ones hurt the most since there are still small holes that i have to clean with a syringe. The only problem that I am having right now is a sore ear and was wondering if this could be a cause from having my wisdom teeth removed? It's been sore for about 5 days now and I was thinking maybe because the hole where my tooth was is healing but it really hurts. Has anyone else had the same problem?
