I have problem with widened veins. I think that widened veins are a consequence of my genetic predisposition and extra weight. Problems with veins started after my second pregnancy. For a long time I have been taking Coumadin and since I have to go to hysterectomy and doctor recommended me to take Lovenox before the procedure. Is Coumadin similar to Lovenox?
Coumadin is very similar to Lovenox, they have similar effects, even though they do not have the same chemical structure. They are both anticoagulatives, so you do not have to worry about your operation. Lovenox is just more in the use in hospitals than Coumadin. Possible side effects are also similar and the most dangerous one is bleeding.

Coumadin and lovenox are not that similiar, for one coumadin is administered orally however lovenox is administered by painful shots to the stomach. Coumadin takes days to start working and days to get rid of out of the blood; however, lovenox only take minutes to start working and around 12 hours to be completely out of the blood.

The reason your doctor recommended lovenox is because if you have issues with bleeding during or after surgery the lovenox is safer because it takes less time to rid the blood. If you were on the coumadin you could bleed internally for days and possibly die.
