Anyone have any idea why my ITBS flares up after 30 minutes when I run back here at home in the lowlands of Iowa? This is the 3rd summer that this has happened. I live in Ecuador at 9,000 ft and have no ITBS problems. I come home for a bit of summer break and it hits me big time after 3 miles, 30 minutes or so. Weird and freakin' frustrating. I'm going out to find a foam roller this morning.
Do the roads have more of a crown here than they do in Ecuador?

I'm not running on crowned roads in either place, mainly trails. I'm assuming it's something to do with the denser air literally making my blood thicker (something like that), causing the ITBS to kick in much sooner that it might at high elevations?

I'm not sure that physiologically speaking, this is a possible explanation.
How long does it take you to get home from Ecuador? It is more likely to be due to a tightening in the glute and TFL (muscle feeding into ITB) which can have a variety of causes eg crowned roads, extended period sitting down, tired shoes, sudden change in terrain etc.

Does it have to do with pace? I would guess at those high altitudes, it's just impossible to run all out. And when you come down to sealevel, do you find yourself running a faster pace?

What about the water system? Most States water is fluoridinated. That could be enough to change one's systems.

I have big problems with my IT Band as well. What is this foam roller that you are talking about? Does it help get rid of the pain? I have not been able to find anything that works for me and have just had to deal with the pain. STretching sometimes helps, but it doesn't help enough. If anyone knows of anything that works pleas let me know! Thanks
