Hi, my father is acting strange. He is acting as if everything in life is great. Euphoria is present with him all the time recently. I have to say that there is no obvious reason for this. Couple of times he also had rage outbursts and again for no reason at all. I talked to a doctor about this. He said that it can be cyclothymia. Is this true? Could my father really be suffering from cyclothymia?
Hi, the symptoms you described, euphoria and rage outbursts consist with cyclothymia. Therefore, the doctor you talked to could be right. This is a chronic mood disorder resulting in mild emotional and behavioral outbreak. Cyclothymia is a form of bipolar disorder. However it is not severe as bipolar disorder, but is only a mild appearance of it. The good thing is that cyclothymia is treatable. The treatment is pretty much the same as it is in treating bipolar disorder. It consists of medications. There have been cases in which the taking of medicine has to continue for the rest of patient's life. That is why you have to take your father to the doctor as soon as possible so that the diagnosis can be made and the treatment started right away.
