I have used Johnson and Johnson First Aid Cream for this problem for years. It works wonderfully and completely dissolves into your tissue. But it is getting impossible to find except on the Internet. I think it may have been discontinued.

I am a great believer in the need to research causes and become our own diagnosticians. Six months ago, bowel movements were so painful, it felt like I was passing razor blades. I went to a gastroenterologist who said I had fizzures. Duh! He gave me an anal cortisone remedy that contained HCL, also. That only masked the problem.
I decided to take a look at my diet, because I realized that the problem would get better, from time to time. So, what was the reason for the improvement? What was I doing, or not doing, that would cause the pain to disappear?
In the morning, I always drink a pot of tea with Orange Spice. I also took my vitamins with orange juice. I decided to look at the possibility that the problem was to due to a sensitivity to citric acid additives. Sure enough, the problem disappeared when I discontinued using anything with citric acid. Then, last week I started drinking a new Blueberry juice cocktail, and the problem returned. After several days, I decided to check the label, and sure enough, the juice contained citric acid. So, after giving up the juice, the problem has disappeared, again.
I have the same problem when eating peanuts.
Diligence and becoming good detectives is the key to solving our health challenges.
I hope this helps. Be diligent about tracing the problem back to the foods you are eating.

I have been suffering with the horrible discomfort of itching and burning after bowel movements for a few months as well. I'm sitting here on a donut hole about to cry now. I had surgery for fissure in May and that only helped for a week, then the pain returned and was even worse. My colon rectal specialist says it will take time to heal, but the posts about citric acid and peanuts made me realize that the pain is worse after having lemonade, chocolate and peanuts so I'm going to elimante that and see if it helps. I've also found that taking 15 minute sitz baths every night, applying vaseline before bowel movements and wiping with cleansing cloths helps.

I think a general cause of the problem is due to damage to the rectal lining. Seeing blood on a tissue, having anal sex, eating too much/little fiber resulting in a difficult to pass stool, wiping roughly... anything which may damage the lining could cause it. The reason is as with any damaged skin, near the final stages of healing, it itches. Best policy is to test your will power to leave it alone for a while, no scratching, and let the wounds heal completely. Maybe neosporin may aid the process in keeping bacteria from the damaged areas, hydrocortisone may help by reducing the urge to itch.

I had this problem 15 years ago. I tried everything and nothing seemed to be responsible. Then I ran out of Scope mouthwash. It disappeared in three days. I am not sure what was in the product that did it to me ... perhaps citric acid. I'm not sure.

ok have u ever been tested for hemorrhoid? u can soak in warm salt water for the itching or use a cream that has zinc oxide or hydrocortisone. Bleeding from rectum can be dangerous i suggest u get a second doctor to do a colonoscopy.

I have been dealing with this for the past one year.I have done extensive research in the meanwhile.I noticed that sufferers posting replies might have different anal conditons.Hemorrhoid .fissures, anal abcess, fistulas, and food allergies all produce similar symptoms.but they are not supposed to be lasting for a long time. i hate to get anybody worried or scared but in very rare cases a condition called anal intraepethelial neoplasm which is a precurser to anal cancer might be the cause(Which almost always is not the case).Anybody with prolonged irrittation might want to look in to that.

Ahh...maybe it's the peanuts! I eat way too many, and too much peanut butter, I know...and the itchiness has been bad for me lately. Previously (several years ago) I determined that eating flax was doing it...and even longer ago, I traced the anal itchiness to bean sprouts! I have been trying to examine my diet to see what it could be this time, and the multiple references to peanuts make me think I may have found an answer. Another thought was plain yogurt...i will see if I can narrow it down by eliminating those one at a time. Good luck everyone...!

I had the same problem of acidy burning pain after BM . I tried to think what is it. was it the wine, peanuts, hot foods , too many veges, what ? Then all of a sudden it occured to me that if I dilute the acid with excess water, it might go away. and IT DID.
After eating anything or after drinking tea, coffee, wine, fruit juice, I drink 3-4 glasses of water to dilute the stomach acid. and I am fine. No pain. ;-)

I began to experience itching and on certain ocassions burning after a BM. I have always used wet wipes at home to clean and still do. After doing research and discussing the symptoms with a doctor that is willing to work with alternative medicines. We began with the possibility that I have a yeast infection. The ultimate goal is to bring the yeast level back to normal. Treatment consist of changing my diet by cutting out ALL sugars, alcoholic beverages, vineager (use lemon and extra virgin olive oil with seasoning for salad dressing - it taste great), fruits, fruit juices, wheat grain products (breads, flour, pasta, cereals, etc.), tomatoes, carrots and products containing sugar or corn syrup ingredients. I take the following dietary supplements (available at your local natural food store) twice per day; 3 ea. Kyolic, 3 ea. Yeast-Cleanse, 3 ea. PB8 Pro-biotic Acidophilus (14 billion good bacteria) and 2 ea. Capryl. I have been on the program for 7 weeks.
The results have been very good. I am 99.9% rid of the itching and burning (only every few days and extremely mild). The up side is that I have lost 14 pounds. I will soon begin to reintroduce these foods to see if the yeast is back to normal levels. If it returns there is a test kit, but main stream doctors will not be aware of the test. I do not know the name, but if you can find a doctor to provide one you have to send a stool sample into the lab and they test for yeast (to find what kind), bacteria and parasites. It apparently cost about $400, but for me it would be worth it.
I am do to have my second Colonoscopy in three years, so that will put any concern there to rest.

I had similar problem and i beleive it is due to increase yeast/ candida in the colon. I started taking acidopilus in form of capsules with each meal and it aleviated the problem in about a month. After musch reading, I have learned that increased yeast/ candida in the intes tines causes acid to be produced. The acid burns the area and that ius why wahsing the area may be somewhat helpfull. When a person taeks acidophilus, it reduces the yeast cells and also acidophilus makes the intestinal environment more neutral.
Acidophilus is sold in all steores . I sued the GNC brand, which contains several different starins. acidoplilus is a healthy bacteria found in our GI tract, bbut if a person has taken antibiotics , it may be geratly reduced. when ther is not enough acidophilus, yeast can multiply..
Unfortunately, the doctors do not diagnose or treat those problems.
I would definitely reccomend .., in addition, taking acidophilus has regualted my bowels...

It's now 2010 so I'm not sure if anyone is still looking at this post.
I have had this problem for over 20 years. It started just after a course of antibiotics.
After a while I discovered that I was lactose intolerant, and managed to keep it under control by eliminating milk from my diet.
I have always continued to take small amounts of butter and cheese.
It March 2009 I had a bad attack of diarrhea and the itch and burn returned, but much worse than before.
In the past 11 months I have been tested for everything except lactose intolerance, and have just self diagnosed myself as having secondary lactose intolerance. (Google it!!)
Now with the correct diet I am just fine.
I'm not saying that this will cure everyone, but it's worth trying.

I have been struggling with this problem for two years, I will have a bowl movement, and two to three hours later I will have a watery discahrge with fecal matter. It makes my anus itch and burn. After reading these posts from these last two years, I am going to try and get my candida yeast under control, and if that does not solve the issue then, go on to the next step. I have struggled with candida yeast my whole life, and have not gotten very serious about it until now. It is making me miserable and my anus hurts quite a bit.
Thanks for all the information, I feel like I have a good place to begin!

One thing I haven't seen listed here is anal fissures. Apparently these can be hard for a doctor to spot, and they fit into the pattern of "it hurts if I wipe a lot" and "it hurts if I don't wipe enough." They'll even hurt if you wash or use wet wipes. Either way you're going to have the irritation. From my experience with them they're difficult to deal with, since the itch makes you want to wipe more, which only exacerbates the problem. I can get temporary relief from hydrocortisone, and children's diaper rash medication, but what seems to work best is taking fiber supplements that make my stools easier (and cleaner), requiring less wiping and giving the fissures a chance to heal. Hemorrhoid medication like Anusol has also helped.
