Glad I found this thread. Although I have yet to experience any itchiness around the anal area my stools do regularly cause a burning sensation when passing and are often accompanied by blood dripping into the bowl and on the tissue when I wipe, never in the stool and always fresh.

I had an examination a year or so ago and the doctor was confident it was haemorrhoids, most of the time they are fine but every now and then they start to bleed again, usually following a bout of diarrhea.

It occurred to me that the diarrhea was irritating the haemorrhoids and causing them to bleed.

On reading this thread and thinking back it has occurred to me that the diarrhea is being caused by acidity, specifically from lemons.

I've had three bouts of burning diarrhea recently, the first two followed a trip to the same restuarant where on both occassions I had a intensely lemon flavoured tart for desert. The third occassion was this morning, last night we had some sea bass which was stuffed with lemon the juices of which had oozed out onto the potatoes it was cooked on, the whole dish was very lemony.

I'm going to cut lemons out of my diet completely and reduce other similarily acidic foods and see if I can get back to a period having normal bowel movements. Hopefully this will reduce the level of irritation and allow the haemorrhoids to recover.

Does this sound sensible? The doctor was very dismissive of the chances of me having any sort of cancer due to my age, 40 and didn't feel I needed to have a colonoscopy.

I have had similar problem for years.   About 9 years ago I was diagnosed with Colitis and they put me on Iron tablets for a year to get my iron levels normal.   Ever since taking those tablets after every defecation I have itching.  It usually takes 20 - 30 minutes afterwards, but the itching is awful.

I finally started using baby wipes which helped but didn't eliminate the problem.   When the itching occurred I would go back to the bathroom with a wipe and kind of scratch and wipe to relieve the itching and I would always have a little but not much fecal matter on the wipe.   I couldn't figure this out as I made sure I was clean after defecating.    I then started taking an extra wipe and gentling inserting a bit of it inside my anus 1 - 3 times to clean out excess fecal matter.  It isn't much but I do it until the wipe doesn't have any more fecal matter on it.   After I started doing this, I had no more itching.

I believe a bit of fecal matter stays just inside the anus and for some people it leaks out just a tad, enough to cause itching.  Maybe because of sweat or something else.   The only thing I don't know is why this started after taking iron tablets and if I stop cleaning that extra bit even today the itching comes back.  So at work and at home, I always keep a supply of wipes.   It is absolutely horrible when I'm out somewhere and have to defecate without them.

Hope this helps someone.

I've had terrible burn and  itching for 6 months. Then there is also some discharge. Had colonoscopy and Dr said "internal hemroid and Diverticulitis". Just like the last scope 5 years ago. Never had this problem though! He said to go on a high fiber diet and use nupercainel cream.  Never telling me what was causing this problem.  Went to my reg. Dr. and he said "there is nothing more that can be done. Don't know why you are so worried. Maybe you should take an anxiety pill. That might help." I use toilet paper left in the butt to absorb  the drainage, mostly in the morning. Especially after walking on the treadmill and at work, on my feet. Also feels like something crawling but it's the whatever draining.  Bought some prep H today. I don't know what to do or where to go. Did take 1/2 an anxiety pill like he said and woke up at midnight itching so bad  I had to get up and spray myself with Tucks! That helps. Anyone been here?

Not sure if my experience can help anyone but here it is:   Started having this itch problem early last year and it got progressively worse.   Doctors were at a loss.   No over the counter meds worked too. It got so bad at one point, I was waking up at night scratching it..  Last fall, I did liver flush to clean my liver that I do every 3 months ( you can search hulda clark liver flush for details).   In preparation for the flush I drunk 1 glass of fresh ap4ple juice every day for 7 days before the flush. While cleaning stomach, I noticed passing yellow looking oily substance.   It started burning my rectus so bad that I sat on sink with water running for over 30 mins. Next morning, I woke up and immediately noticed no itch.   No problems for 4 months at all until last week, some mild itch returned.   Probably time for another flush.

My doctor told me that need to wipe better because I have the same issue. He said it was called Puirtus Ani which is another way to say my butt is on fire and he can't help me. I did have a colonoscopy and they found nothing unusual. The best solution I found to the problem is avoiding spicy food and using a spray I found at HEB called "fire in the hole" --yes that's what it's called--and the stuff really helps. Not sure where else you can find it tho'

I've use J&J first Aide Cream and just found a product for anal itching called Fire in the Hole. It was a little pricey but it stopped the problem immediately. My local pharmacy carries both and I found the spray online as well.

I find that if I do not eat any beans or dairy products I am almost totally clear of this proplem. There are a few other things which cause a problem but to a much lesser degree.

I still am having the problem but find that if I lay off beans or dairy I am usually ok. Also, when I feel a bit of heart burn I take a glass of water with half a tsp. of baking soda. That solves the heartburn and also stops the burning seepage.

I have had similar problems and find that I need to put a bit of tissue partially pushed in so it does not fall out. I often find that piece of tissue has seepage of fecal matter and that helps prevent the burning. If I do not put the tissue I end up having to put ointment to heal the skin later. Anyway, this problem comes from food of which I discovered beans and diary are the culprits. I think there are more but I have not found out what.

Yes, I have had the very same problem for about 10 years and have been to many doctors and tried many things. The only thing that really works is taking an imodium anti-diarrhea pill immediately after a bit of diarrhea with burning. It works but soon the problem is back. I also find if I stay away from dairy, especially cream and also beans, especially black beans. Absolutely do not tak anxiety pills. That doctor should be fired. Wash the rectal area often with warm mild soapy water and put a bit of toilet tissue pushed in just enough so it does not fall out. I also find that artifical sweeteners are terrible and artifical flavors and colorants are bad.

I have had the acidity around the anus problem for several years now. Washing does help...but the best thing that I've found is a salve called Calmoseptine.  My doctor gave me several samples of it to try. It actually toughens the skin surrounding the anus and providew tremendous relief.  One application lasts for several days.  He did not want to write a prescription for it because insurance would not cover it and it is somewhat expensive.  He did indicate that a pharmacist might be able to provide custom compounding of the product much more cheaply.  I'm going to go to my pharmacy and check into that possibility.

I have had the same problem for years, on and off, getting worse every time. Doctors were useless, nothing wrong, use zinc ointment they said. That did not help. I researched on the net, tried various things. What seems to be working for me so far:

1. Changing diet. Avoid spicy foods, coffee, alcohol, tomatoes, citrus (all my favorites). Also dairy.

2. Take probiotics, acidophilus. Stopped the bloating, gas, loose stools, leakage.

3. For immediate, temporary relief, wash with sulfur soap, apply Polysporin Triple Antibiotic Heal-fast ointment. Lanacaine for extreme itching, vaseline also useful.

Still experimenting and researching for a long-term explanation and solution...

Hope this helps someone else get on the right track.

I am ematichu and it is now 6 years since I put in the last post. I am cured of the Type II diabetes but still have all of the issues with the rectal burning and seepage. I was tested and found to have pylori so was given something for it. After taking the treatment the symptoms stoped for a while but returned again after a few months. I was found to have another strange parasite a year ago so went on vermox (mebendazole) for a month. The symptoms seemed to subside for a while but returned again. I am going in for a colonoscopy in a week in another attempt to see if anything turns up.

Fast moving bowel movements seem to have the acid content much more so than slow movements do. To me that indicates an inability to absorb the digestive acids in the bowel well enough. I've begun eating things that will slow down the digestive process and have begun to have less burning. Fiber makes the bowels empty more quickly, so I've begun to eat less apples. Bananas and oranges do not seem to have any effect on movement for me.
