I had the copper iud inserted about a year ago and finally after 6 yeast infections and over time developing this dirty fish smell I got tired of it and pulled it out myself. It was the best thing I've ever done, it slid right out and within a month I got my period that only lasted 3 days. No more periods for 9 days long and nasty cramps however I still had the fishy smell and I just got into a new relationship so having sex with him is embarrassing it smells fine during but as soon as we r done and he pulls out you get a nasty whiff of fish we haven't talked about it but i know he must smell it if i can so I finally went and checked it out and It turns out i just got diagnosed for bv last week. I am just about to finish my last few days of my pills and the smell is gone and no more thick grey like discharge. It was the most embarrassing thing ever. I clean and shower twice a day and still I could smell it on myself. All that would go through my mind was If I can smell it then other ppl must too. I will never ever get a iud inserted in me again I would much rather get back on the pill then having a infection in my vagina every few weeks. Pain in my ass was all the iud was good for. Hope this helps you girls that are not sure what's wrong with you.

I've had the mirena for 7 years (this is my second one) and  I've been very happy with it. I see my GYN annually and last year was the first time I've had BV since I first got the mirena. Since then I seem to have it every few months. BUT I had it three times before I got the mirena and it took the 10 day treatment of metro gel to get rid of it when I was a teenager. I'm thinking that may be what I need to do this time. Will talk to my GYN. Interestingly, I seem to have this problem more often when I am not having sex regularly and relying on B.O.B. to deal with needs. Maybe no more BOB.

I had the mirena placed in December of 08 and after a couple months starting get bv and yeast infections and same white thick discharge when having sex and foul odor. I have been dealing with it ever since. after research it seemed like it could be the iud. so finally at the end of September of 2012 I had my iud removed hoping these problems would go away. but I still cant get rid of them. im constantly at the doctors for yeast infections, bv and uti. I never in my life had these issues until after I had kids and had iud put in. as soon as im done with the meds it comes back within days to a week. and especially if I have sex it comes back even faster. im so tired of always having issues down there and no meds are working permanently. ive been checked for stds but they always come back negative!! im going on the 5th year of this c**p!! im gonna go nuts if I don't figure something out.

I am sooooo glad i found this post, i had a merina inserted on the 19th Jan 13, it was fine til i got my first period. I have had 3 periods since and after every period i get BV (or i think it is) i am going to get it taken out as soon as i can... I am clean and i have also been showering more just to keep down there clean. I don't really have an overpowering smell, but, i have had the cottage cheesy show, the irritation, the redness (even hurts to wipe after the toilet), AND my period can last up to 2 weeks, very light and dark brown... i want my 3 day med flow back....I have never had any of these symptoms before getting the merina, that's why i have looked it up and found this....

WOW!!!! This makes me feel a little better after the day I have had... I got Mirena inserted 6 weeks after I had my second son. It was painful yes but I tolerated it pretty well. Almost immediately i began bleeding. For the first 3/4 months I spotted in between my periods leaving me wondering when I was going to have a "normal" period again. Not only was the bleeding happening whenever it wanted to, I also had to deal with spotting every time I had sex. This continued for months then out of the blue... No periods! I would spot some but it was very light never filling a pantie liner. This felt amazing to not deal with periods anymore! A GODSENT right??? WRONG! My periods went away and then came the ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, CRY SPELLS, and on top of all that WEIGHT GAIN(I have gained almost 40/45 pounds. The biggest I have been in my life!) I was on an emotional roller coaster and had no idea what was going on with me. I can remember two occasions at work that sent me "over the top"! I left work in tears and was on the verge of quitting my job. My attitude was the worst it had ever been and I couldn't control it. I start to notice that things that I would normally over look took me to the HULK in minutes... Slowly it subsided but then I noticed BAD headaches, severe back pain, (To the point were I thought about getting a new mattress) and my hips hurt like crazy. I figured that this all came from me gaining so much weight. I would just pop a BC/Goody powder and keep it moving. During sex sometimes I would feel this sharp pain from my pelvic area down my leg. I would shriek with pain and my hubby would stop but it was crazy the way it felt. I couldn't help but notice that all of a sudden I saw vaginal discharge. I assumed that it was from me spotting but then began to notice that it was more than just a few days, it was constant. I made an appointment and spoke with my doctor about what was going on. He blew it off and stated that he did not see any discharge but did testing and found "some" yeast. I took something to clear it up but before I knew it it was back again, but this time with a odor. I tried to clear it up myself by over the counter yeast infection meds but nothing changed so i scheduled a nother appointment with the obgyn. ONCE AGAIN he stated that he could not smell an odor and did cultures along with STD testing. All results came back negative. So Im stuck with this nasty discharge and odor but where is it coming from. Not once did I connect this to Mirena. I found ways to get the odor down by bathing 2/3 times a day and attempting to drink more water. It helped a little but I couldn't help but notice my panties being wet. About a month ago me and my hubby were having sex and afterward I hurt bad. I slept with my legs open in hopes to get relief. I mean it was a swelling, tightening pain that just came out of no where. The next day he attempted to get me in the mood and I had to tell him not tonight. I was hurting I assumed that it was the soap that I was using that made my vagina hurt so bad. It also burned when I went to tinkle and reaally hurt when i went to wipe myself. This last for about 2 days. I immediately switched my soap to a more sensitive one. (Summer's Eve) Things were back to normal and me n my hubby were back at it. Then I felt the worst pain ever...... After sex I hurt sooooo bad! My vagina hurt and it felt like needles sticking in the inside of it. I hadn't had any issues with the soap i was using but once again I thought it was it. I soaked in the tub with vinegar and water and avoided soap. Days later the pain is still there so I called my OBGYN and set an appointment. I went to the appointment today and explained all my symptoms to my doctor. He stated that the pain couldn't becoming from the IUD because it was in place and the strings on my IUD look fine. He took some cultures to do test. He confirmed that i have a yeast infection again and gave me the side eye while stating that I have the symptoms of an STD. I don't care what he says. I know that I have been faithful to my Hubby and he to me. After reading all these comments about the Mirena IUD I am convinced that i to am a victim of this AWFUL device. What gets me is the fact that the doctors keep shrugging off your symptoms like its nothing. WHY??? What do they get out of all these women falling victim to these strange discharges, physical pain and all the other harmful side effects. I am waiting for the results of my test. I am supposed to get them back by Monday. I am praying for answers and even when they come back fine I will be having this thing removed... The doctor convinced me to wait until I get the results on Monday, but I can promise you that as soon as they come back this Mirena is history!!!! Praying for all you that were affected by this device. I hope this helps someone that is having some of the same symptoms I have had... And possibly help someone else that is debating whether to get Mirena or not. I will posting my results... PS.... I didn't even mention my hair loss :(

I am so grateful I came across this post. I recently had the Mirena inserted, and have since been diagnosed with a vaginal infection. I just finished my second round of antibiotics, and the infection still hasn't cleared. I will be calling my OB today. Thanks again for the post.

Hello, i was so taking back, upon reading your post, i had the mirena 2 month s after giving birth to my son, three yrs ago, but i notice right after getting the mirena inserted, i had side effects right after, the cramping was painful, my hair came out so bad, but my Gyn, told me that hair loss wasnt one of the side effects, but that was a lie, and i started with the yeast infection, and bacterial infection, all the time, so i understand how you feel....

Had the mirena IUD inserted... Hurt like hell cramps and they dident even place it correctly... I had to go back after one week trying to work through the pain... Us women can really put up with pain... But this no women should have to go through this. Men have no idea.... My husband always feels it during intercourse and i bleed the next morning after a night... I dont even want sex anymore. 5 months maybe 5 times having him go inside... That painful... After research yes IUD can cause yeast infections also you can be allergic to the IUD as well... I have an appintmet to have it removed... Will post how my vagina feels after removal

I have had my mirena for almost two years. I am 31, married with two children, and have had more cases of bv and yeast infections this past year than I ever had my whole life. I have constant lower abdominal pain, feels heavy after sex, discharge and just an uncomfortable feeling. My dr thinks I am nuts by saying this all has to do with mirena, but if he read a blog or two, he might think differently. I will have it removed this summer. Having infection after infection is not good for reproductive health. Hope this helps someone.

Wow. I've had mine for 4 years. Have been really patient with it.. but only in the past 6 months have i started with the infections. 2 yeast, one UTI and 3 Vaginosis... I JUST CLUED IN that it could be the Mirena. And according to y'all, i'm probably right. I certainly DO NOT recommend it to anyone.
