I never had BV until I had the marina. I was told that it was thrush and researched the side effects myself as I was told they couldn't be connected. I'm very positive and lacked energy and experienced apathy. I thought it was my thyroid keeping me from enjoying running. The mood settled in the end but the BV continued.

Look into actinomycoses, or actinomycosis. Have your doctor specifically culture for that. It Is a bacteria specific to iuds that cause yeast to overgrow and is that's why it's missed.

My doctor gave me clindamycin cream to treat it.

Same here! Sure glad I'm not the only one. I've had the Mirena IUD since 2013 and constant infections. I have been to my doctor multiple times requesting to be tested for everything. They have told me multiple times that the infections has nothing to do with the IUD but I disagree. All test comes back negative but the infections (odor, itching and discharge) returns every 2 months. My doctor have asked me to try several different probiotics to help reduce bad bacteria but still, nothing works. I just keep Monostat 7 in stock at my house because sex, swimming and eeven sensitive soaps will cause the infection to return.

Hello Ladies!

I thought I would share my ongoing BV experience, since having the Mirena IUD. I got Mirena in November 2016 and just had it removed September 2017 (a week ago). The main reasons I had the IUD removed were:

1. Ongoing Bacterial Infections (BV) - These started happening about 6 months after having Mirena. They would appear each month (possibly around menstruation, but didn't know since I stopped having periods). I was constantly itching and the odor was driving me nuts. I'm a very clean person and super sensitive to smells, so having my "lady area" smelling bad really freaked me out. It had a fishy, yet ammonia smell to it. Combined with the smell and spending $80 each month for BV antibiotics, I was getting fed up. My gyno mentioned that some people are just more prone to getting BV with IUDs. Ugh!
2. Sharp Ovarian Pain - A few times throughout the month, I would have sharp ovarian pains. I would normally make a fist and push down on my pelvis in hopes to numb the pain. It just didn't feel right or natural to have these pains.

- POST IUD REMOVAL -
I had a sharp ovarian pain going into the IUD removal, but once it was out - the pain IMMEDIATELY disappeared! The day before removal, I started taking another round of BV antibiotics. I just finished them and so far, no smells or issues yet! (fingers crossed). I finally have my energy back. I feel 100% relieved.

One weird side effect (for me at least)... I started another form of birth control - Gildess FE 1/20 a few days after the IUD removal. Suddenly, I was SUPER fatigue (slept 90% of the weekend) and then experienced an onset of canker sore outbreaks in my mouth. Not just one, but MULTIPLE canker sores to the point I was unable to talk or eat. I maybe get one small canker sore once or twice a year, but this is horrible! There seems to be no remedies to heal to sores and help my hormones get balanced. Canker sores do pop up based on hormonal imbalances. As my gyno said, "Your body is in shock because it's been lazy the past 10 months with the IUD and now it doesn't know what to do." As a result of the horrible canker sores and fatigue, I went off my BC (only took it for 4 days post removal) and immediately got my energy back. The canker sores are still there, unfortunately. I plan to let my body naturally detox before going back on another birth control pill.

-REFLECTION-
Even though the symptoms post-removal have sucked, I do already feel 100x better without having the foreign object in my body. Wish I wouldn't have gotten Mirena in the first place, but it was certainly a learning lesson.

Btw - I'm so thankful for this forum. If it wasn't for me finding this forum, I would still be confused on why I was getting ongoing BV. I will keep everyone posted in a few months on whether or not I get any more weird symptoms and/or if the BV comes back. Best of luck! -jvan27

I had the mirena put in about 6 years ago and had no issues with the first one. Once it was time to have a new one put in I had a bv. They put the new one in while I had the infection and afterwards I went through 3 rounds of antibiotics. I still had bv. They finally gave me a cream that worked... For a month maybe. I've had back to back infections ever since I had the new mirena put in. I often wondered if it was because I had a bv when they took out the old one and put a new one in. I thought that maybe the bacteria was just stuck on the mirena and giving me consistent infections. After reading of the comments im beginning to think it just has something to do weigh iud's. I plan on having mine removed in two weeks. Hopefully everything will go back to normal.

I had mine on for 13 months and even after 9 months of having the Mirena Out, I still get yeast infections....or well it's itchiness mainly outside the vulva on my lip area. I've been examined by doctors while experiencing this itchiness and I have NO infections according to them. OBYN says it's "dermatitis" which I've Never ever had before this stupid Mirena! I hope I get back to my regular self soon cause I don't know what do anymore! I keep applying Monistat almost everyday and I'm sick of this.

I've had the Mirena in for a year now. And these past 3 months in a row I've gotten BV right after my period while I'm having sex. The doctor just treated me for it and I finished my third treatment last week. She's now started me on the gel treatment as a preventative twice a week for 6 months. I just did my second gel treatment and it's back!!! I will be calling to talk about the mirena possibly causing it.

Hey everyone, everyone’s body is different. I was like a crash test dummy for years trying different pills and contraceptives with no luck! My body rejected all of them! Until along came the Mirena, which I have now had for 17 years and apart from a bit of acne and spotting at the very start for few months I have had no issues. Just think it’s important to write this as for me it’s been amazing! I’m genuinely sorry for all if you that have had issues.

I have had the copper IUD for about two 3 years or so. And have been noticing a smell and everything you have listed, the strong fish order, the yellow discharge, the BV, the yeast infections. In all the troubles I thought it was from the bath water or the dauche that I have done, now I know. I have had countless BVs and many yeast infections and one of the PAs gave me meds that did not even help me. It was time and money wasted. I will do farther research and out and go the copper IUD. I am ready for the order to go away and not have to be offended by my own smell. If anyone is offended by their own smell, there's a problem. Thank you for your time writing this article. It surely helped me.
