Its actually most likely from the string... The way it was explained to me is bacteria collects on the string and causes an infection

Thank you so much for sharing, everything that happened to you has happened to me. I am very upset with myself for trying this and will be taking it out ASAP. Again thank you for sharing!

I'm crying. Thank you so very much for sharing your experience. I feel like my 6 year nightmare is finally going to be over. I'm not alone. I can't tell you how this feels.

Yes. I have had the same problem. You describe the symptoms exactly as I have had them! When I first got the symptoms I had a course of treatment and I was jubilant that it seemed to have worked. However, a week later it's back again. I'll be trotting off back to my GP to get it removed ASAP! It is ruining my life. I had just met someone new but the chances of me taking things any further with this on board are out of the question!

It very well could be Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). I’ve had the same problem since having it inserted. Metrogel should help, ask your doc!

I’ve had Mirena for over a year constant BV, Yeast Infections, and/ or UTIs every one or two months. So annoying to deal with this. I will be having it taken out soon.

Babe you have a bacteria imbalance called BV which is something alot of women (including myself) experienxe using the IUD or Marina. For some people treatment makes it go away but the longer you leave it the firmer the grip of the particular bacteria.
Talk to your dr and naturopath and get them to help you with a programme.

Thank you for this post, because I have realised that since I have had my mirena, that is from when I have had bv, which has been over and over again. So I am going to get my mine removed. Thank you again :)

Tell him you want it out and don't take no for an answer. As if he could possibly know what it's like to live with. Go to another doctor if he won't help you. And report him.

I agree! Im going to Dr's next week. I've had Merina in for year and half. I've pretty much had bv the while time. I've been on antibitoics twice and the rest of the times, I would do home remedies or ph pills. I tried everything!! I just got off 10 days of meds and it came back then next day. Also started to spot today. I'm so over it! I don't need it for birth control, it was to help control endometriosis. I can say it helped with that but the stress of the smell isn't worth it.

I got the mirena in the summer of 2014. 2 years later I got a yeast infection and after treating it, it kept coming back. Then it was always switching between yeast and BV. I then became resistant to the over-the-counter fluconazole and got a prescription for ketoconazole. It worked the first time but the yeast infections kept coming back. This continued for 9 months and then after reading this forum I decided to take it out. I took it out in June 2017 and got a 2 week prescription for boric acid suppositories (because I was resistant to oral anti-fungals). I'm happy to report IT WORKED! It took awhile for my flora to restore to normal afterwards but I didn't get anymore infections and it is now January 2018. My partner was also treated in case he was harbouring the yeast. I also refrained from sex for the two weeks of using the boric acid suppositories. I also found the abstract of an article (from the late 80's) that found that the strings of the IUD harbour yeast/bacterial infections and they then become resistant to the treatment. I hope this helps! It was the worst 9 months and I am so happy I took that thing out!

DRINK LOTS OF WATER LADIES!!! I MEAN LOTS OF IT!! I have had this same problem but the more I drink water and eat yogurt it goes away. Up your intake on fruits and vegetables and cut out bread and sugar as much as possible. DO NOT DOUCHE!! It washes away the good bacteria in your vagina and may be what's causing the yeast infection to become worst or change into bv. PANTY LINERS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND; AND BEST OF ALL FREE BALL. LOL OR FREE CAT I SHOULD SAY. If you're home just chilling out don't put on any underwear and let your lady bits air out. TAKE A DETOX BATH. Had my Mirena for 5 years now I get it taken out in Feb. Although I think it is the best bc because i haven't had any problems since I've had it except this slight smell and discharge. Doctor keeps saying I'm perfectly fine so.

I am so happy I've read this. I thought something was wrong with me. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who is experiencing this on a constant basis. I have the IUD, and unfortunately I have been and out of my doctor's office just to get treated anywhere from 2-3 times a month. Not only is it very frustrating. But it also embarrassing as well when it comes to the stench from having both a yeast infection and BV. I am definitely considering on having it removed. It has made my life miserable having issues that I haven't had before.
