I'm so glad that I'm not the only one w/ this problem! I've never had this before, so it really freaked me out! I noticed a small lump at the base of my labia a few days ago and now it three times bigger and its sore. I've been tested and haven't been sexually active for some time. However, like some of you I'm menstrating. I'm not under anymore stress then usual, so I've got no idea what is going on. I'm going to make an appt w/ my gyno and see what she says.
Do they really "pop"? How bad does that hurt?

wow! I've been in ob-gyn for 7 yrs and I've never seen a case like this so thought I was the only one. I guess it must be hormonal, mine errupt days before my mensus and does it hurt!! There's always one or two pea size and I can't help but want to squeeze it till it all completely drains, and sometimes all the squeezing doesn't drain anything at all. It's definitly not any sort of STD because trust me, I've seen EVERYTHING in the book and more!!!!!!! We do have sebacous glands that do happen to get cloged and it is mostly triggered by hormonal changes in our body. I think I'll try the tea tree oil suggested since I've heard it's good for facial acne. Oh and barthocysts are NOT the same as this. That should be drained by a physician, a good DR will cut off the gland (Bartho) so that there won't be a reacurrance.
Good Luck to all you ladies! -nurseBetty!! :-D

Well, I don't feel so alone now. I've had very similar sounding symptoms for years. I've been tested for herpes three times, all negative..tested for syphilis and every other STD. Recently, I had an incision over the areas where the dr. removed some of the tissue. I've had a few recurring bumps since then, but they aren't as frequent and less painful. They always appear before my period.
Take care and stay healthy!

I've been having this problem. it has been scaring me forever. but it always seems to come before or right after my period. i havent had any in like a month and a half. i dont know if it has to do with my stress, ive been stressed terribly in the past 6 months and ive been breaking out on my face and what not, and i never used to break out, i have always had a clear complexion. i also asked my boyfriend how much detergent he had been putting in the laundry(hes not very good at doing the laundry) and he said he just poured it right out from the bottle without measuring it and he said he would put quite a bit in there. So i dont know if it is because of that or not. im glad i found out that im not the only one that has this problem. Does anyone think i need to go get checked out by a gyno just to make sure? i really dont know what to do.

Hi, I "have" herpes and take Valtrex. Dr just told me these were cysts. They seem to be caused by stress and shaving (my case). I was going to get laser hair removal and was instructed to shave. Well, I shaved to close to my labia. I never got the laser treatment due to a schedule conflict.
I've had a few pea size ones before and they would go away on their own. I thought they were just a bad Herpes breakout. But they were not blisters and would eventually pop and bleed. Today I went to the DR as I had a large painful one on my labia minor. He had to numb it using a needle, lance and drain it. IT WAS SO PAINFUL. He left the smaller one alone. If I would have known what I was in for, I would have been sitting in the bath for the last 3 days trying to get it to drain.
PS: stay very clean, wear panty liners to stay dry, don't shave down there unless you use one of those special razors that won't cut you. Try not to stress...

I have had similar symptoms for so long I can't remember exactly when they started. I had them before becoming sexually active and after becoming sexually active. I had them when on birth control and when not on birth control. I've never been pregnant and I haven't been through menopause.
Over the years I've changed laundry soaps, body soaps, bubble baths, etc., so I don't think the cause is allergic. I rarely shave the area close to the labia so that's not a cause.
I don't notice any particular patterns ... they come and go irregularly, and appear (at least in me) to be unrelated to menstrual cycles or stress. I don't have any STDs. My obgyn thinks I might have POCD, so it is possible there may be a hormonal component.
I am significantly overweight, which seems to pop up in other people's comments, but otherwise I can see no particular causes for them. (However, obesity and hormonal imbalances are related, so again, it could be a hormonal issue.)
Mine are more often on the left labia minorum, but sometimes on the right. They are mostly centrally located. Usually I only have one at a time, but on occasion I might get 2. They rarely get larger than a pea. They are generally fluid ... not hard. Mine almost never come to a head and pop; they generally just eventually start dissipating and go away on their own. They are uncomfortable but I've never had pain or swelling to the point of being miserable.
Mine are very erratic ... I might get a "swarm" of them, one after another, for a few weeks, I might go 3 or 4 months without having one. They usually last for 2 days to a week.
To date, the discomfort has been minor, and not worth the added hassle and pain of getting them drained or taking antibiotics. So I just accept them and go on.
My sympathies to those of you who have had much worse troubles than I have with these little beasties.

Like everyone else posting here, I have had these forever. I remember asking my Mom about them when I was a teen and had just started my period (I am 36)
I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think they must be related to that syndrome. PCOS, for those who don't know is syndrome which causes hormonal irregularities, acne, facial hair, male-pattern balding, obesity, irregular periods, infertility and high choloesterol. It affects about 10% of women, but most doctors (even gynos) won't recognize it. You need an endocrinologist. It makes you more vulnerable to stroke, heart attack, endometrial cancer and it can occur with or without actual cysts on your ovaries. (But i am starting to think it might make you more cyst prone elsewhere, too.)
I am starting treatment for it, and I hope that it will also help with these stupid cysts.
We've all had this debilitating condition for years and are reluctant to bring it up because it involves our "lady" parts. That's awful, and I am going to make myself a promise to bring every problem I have to the attention of my doctors until I have a solution, from now on. Living for 20+ years with labia cysts is a little much to do, for embarrassment's sake.
Thanks everyone, for posting.

I have experienced these "bumps" for years on the outer labia within the hair areas. It starts out as a slight itch. Upon inspection, I see a lump under the skin - no pore or opening is visible. When I palpate the lump, I can feel it and it is hard. It sometimes feels like there is something sharp inside [maybe an ingrown hair?]. Eventually the lump gets bigger and more painful. If I can stand the pain, I can squeeze it and a little tiny bit of white stuff comes out but lump still there. Eventually it feels "ready" and when squeezed, a very light orange fine curdy stuff comes out in a "string". After that blood. A small hole is left behind. Once I had one practically explode and it looked like curds, blood, pus and a wild curly hair.
I had my hubby check them out - nothing seen like an ingrown hair or anything. One RN told they don't do anything with those but failed to explain what they were. I can deal with the itch and the pain and the nasty drainage but I LOVE oral sex and all I can think of when he's down there is that he's grossed out by the little ones yet to produce something. (Some never have changed). If anyone has had these successfully removed, please post.
About weight being the cause - that's bogus because I had these before I had my gastric bypass surgery in 03 [lost 178 pounds] and I still get them now and then.
Once they have drained, I use Neosporin or triple bacitracin and it goes away - for awhile until another one rears it's ugly head. It's not STD's or from being dirty or wiping too much. I think they are clogged sex glands and we just have to deal with it.
I'd like to have them removed so it looks pretty again. Any thoughts on this?

I'd never experienced any of this before until I started taking Yaz. Since I starting taking Yaz 6 months ago, I've had about 4 of these cysts. Someone else posted that these breakouts coincided with her taking Yaz. Anyone else? Maybe it is just a coincidence, but if anyone else has had this response to Yaz maybe its worth switching OCPs.

OMG....I have had this for like two days and I am dying! Is there anything I can do? I am embarassed to ask my mother or sister about this. I had this once before and it broke on it's own just releasing a little bit of pus. Of course I am not sure this is what it is but it feels the same. I have tried warm compresses but so far nothing. I am at work now and every time I get up and down I want to scream, even walking hurts! Any advice from those of you who have had this before? It was so hard to sleep last night. Will this get better?

Ok I have somthing similar but little different. I have a few bumps about the size of a pea or smaller. They have been there for ever. recently I tried squeezing them and this white actually hard substance came out. It was almost powdery. i am not sure if that is because they have been theer so long or what?

I have similar bumps from time to time on the mons, the labia majora and the labia minora.
I have been told that those on the mons and labia majora are a result of hidradenitis suppurativa. As a previous poster stated, Cleocin can help clear them up, but it *IS* only temporary and, like taking any antibiotic long-term, it can lead to antibiotic resistance! (Cleocin is a brand name of the drug clindamycin). Long term usage of Cleocin can also lead to a nasty infection called C-Diff (Clostridium difficile) which can cause colitis, an intestinal infection that can be fatal.
MRSA and Strep B, as well as run of the mill staph aureus (the "SA" portion of MRSA), can all be causes of these types of lesions as well.
Cleanliness in the area helps somewhat, at least in my case, but reducing stress and taking care of my health as a whole is what really does the trick for me.

i'm glad i'm not the only one with this. i recently started getting these when my gp put me on a 6 month course of antibiotics for my skin. it gave me a yeast infection and these! they are most unpleasant! is anyone else experiencing them with thrush/yeast infection or is anyone else getting them that is on a progesterone implant or contraceptive? i recently had an implant fitted in my arm as well. which i think may have something to do with it as well. :-(

I've had a bump a little bit smaller than a pea for 4 years.... it's a bit sensitive to touch, but other than that it doesn't bother me.. it seems to get more sensitive right before my period. It never breaks, leaks, nothing. Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?
