It IS b.s. that they say it isn't related to surgery. I just had a laproscopic appendectomy over here in Israel, and am experiencing numbness and tingling in my right thigh, on the center and outer parts of the leg. My dr. and surgeons all told me that it's from the anesthetics used during surgery, and it (supposedly) normally goes away within a few days. It's definitely from the surgery, though, and since mine has persisted for a week, I just got a note to go to a neurologist as well. Hopefully it will go away soon, although after reading what's going on with a lot of you, it sounds like I got the less-horrible lot! Don't let your dr. lie to you, though. :-s

I had left shoulder arthroscopic surgery a couple of weeks ago and now when I lay on my back, my right thigh gets a numb, tingling, almost icy-hot feeling, as though it is getting a low current charge.  Only happens when lying flat on my back.  This did not happen before my surgery.  My anesthesia was a combination of a complete arm nerve block and general anesthesia.

Hi:  I was searching today post-op a little over a month after gallbladder removal.  I too am having pains in my legs, back of my thighs but it starts in back and hips and down legs, its crippling sometimes.  Thought I was sitting too much after surgery so I started walking.  Walking aggravates it.  I went to see my regular Dr and he is concerned on something he saw on my xrays.  They could not give me an MRI, its too soon still after surgery.  I have some kind of metal clamps from gallbladder surgery and you have to wait min. 6-wks.  So my Dr is still waiting for me to be able to get an MRI to see whats going on.  He didn't brush me off for muscle spasms or me being a baby.  He is concerned and wants to know why I am having this pain, and now after surgery.  Pain meds arent really doing anything, steriods aren't doing anything.  I have not returned back to work cause I just can't sit and be there its too much pain.  All sounds like pinched nerves but don't know.  Just wild how many of us are having this pain.  If I'm on my feet too much I really suffer.

I had exactly the same procedure with a combination of right shoulder block and general anesthesia. I woke up with my entire left leg feeling "asleep." (numb and tingeling) It is also swollen and much larger than the right leg.. I have been taking diuretics and trying to move my legs alot. It has resolved some but 3 days post-op, it hurts more than the shoulder.

I had Surgery on July 10th 2012. A right hemicolectomy, to remove a pre-cancerous polyp. I was in hospital for 13 days, with complications etc, anyway i noticed my left outer thigh went numb about 5 days after surgery. I told my surgeon and she did reflex tests etc. She said she had no idea how it happend. So i went and saw my regular GP and he said that it was "a condition involving compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve" exactly what old mate before me said, i get pain, pinching and burning which has increased in the last few days. My GP said that it would go away in time and not to worry, he had the same thing after surgery and it went away within a year. For the surgeon and by the sounds of things other surgeons to say they don;t know how it happened is bull sh*t. However i did have several injections of hepron in the left thigh, which is a medicine to stop the blood from clotting, maybe that caused it???

I had gallbladder surgery literally 5 days ago.  I was back to the hospital 3 times since because of complications.  Yesterday I awoke to the tingling, burning and numbness in my left leg (starts from glutes right down to my toes).  Different sitting positions, walking and massaging was not helping.  After self checking, I realized the lower calf muscle was paining when pressure was put on it.  I got my husband to massage deeply, the head of the calf muscle and that brought some relief.  When I went to bed I was restless because the numbness had become worse again my husband massaged my leg....didn't help much.  I prayed and prayed to The Good Lord for healing, this morning I awoke and my leg is back to normal. PRAISE GOD!!! I've since prayed for the healing of everyone who might be suffering at this time.  I hope you believe and I hope you will be healed.  God Bless!!

I have this. Did you figure out a cause?

I have had this pain since a kidney transplant 2 years ago. From my upper left thigh, to just above my knee. Burning and numbness. They ALL use the LIE that it's the way you were positioned on the table, it's the way you sleep, shingles, etc...BS!!! It's because someone damaged or cut a nerve and the doctors are trying to cover for it. They also damaged my throat during intubation and now I have food and liquids locking up in my throat when I try to eat. I didn't have ANY of these problems before my surgery.  :-@   They lie all the time to protect their asses.

It is neuropathy caused from positioning during surgery. I got mine with open heart surgery 11 years ago, and although it got somewhat better, it never went away. I just had kidney surgery 2 mo. ago, and now it's worse then ever, with tingling, numbness and burning. I can assure you that it's nothing that can be remedied, and it will slowly get a little better, but probably never leave completely. I wouldn't put myself through a bunch of tests. It happens to a lot of people. I try for the most part to ignore mine. I know it isn't going to hurt me...it's just a weird, werid feeling.

I am experiencing this! I had my gallbladder removed 5 days ago and yesterday I started having numbness and tingling from my lower back down to my toes. When I walk around its not so bad but any sitting or laying starts the tingling again. I'm really paranoid about this. It feels like my legs are constantly falling asleep. I will be contacting my doctor asap. I am thankful to find this site and see that I am not alone with this problem.

I had laparoscopic gallbladder surgery 7 days ago. The instant they moved me from recovery to my hospital bed' my left thigh had pain shooting through it that felt like someone was stabbing me with a hot poker. It hurt way worse than the incision areas. When I complained, everyone appeared flummoxed and said that they had no idea why it was happening. I also had numbness down the outside of both legs from the hip to the toes. Each day it is getting better. I take Serrapeptase, which is really helpful. I buy it through Amazon, but it's available over the counter at most health food stores. My assumption is that something in the surgery bruised my nerves and/or that my nervous system is "confused" by the invasive loss of an organ. Every organ and nerve in the body is tied to all others. It stands to reason that the nervous system might go into a kind of shock after such a huge affront to the body. My plan is to wait it out. I will use my Serrapeptase, return to my private yoga trainer, see a chiropractor and an acupuncturist. I know from part experience that bruised nerves take at least six months to heal, and they often feel numb for weeks before regenerating themselves. Don't give up hope! It is completely within the realm of possibility that you will fully recover from the condition. It's just sad that such a common side effect has obviously not been studied or treated with any serious regard. Good luck!
