I have learned a lot about this fracture thanks to all of the posts. I'm 44 y/o female just 1 week post injury and awaiting surgery on Monday. I fell off my jetski and struck the top of my right foot on it. I saw an orthopedic specialist on Tuesday who's going to put in 2, possibly 3, screws. I'm quite a bit nervous since I've only ever had a broken toe. I can see now that I'm going to have to have a lot of patience. I'm already frustrated with the whole crutch thing & not being able to get around. The doctor told me that although the surgery is considered outpatient, that I may need to stay overnight due to pain issues -- that was real comforting! Although I did have severe pain right after it happened for a couple of days, it's not too bad right now. I'd like to hear more about everyone else's surgery experience and what to expect. I'm gathering from reading the previous posts that I probably won't be in a fiberglass cast until my follow-up after surgery for removal of stitches. I appreciate your feedback.

Hi camp7462. I just had surgery on Monday. If your experience is anything like mine, the first day, you will not have much pain as the anesthesia will block out most of it. The 2nd and 3rd day were pretty painful, but manageable with LOTS of painkillers. You'll see a marked improvement on the fourth day. Remember to keep it elevated as much as possible, and ice through the bandage. 48 hours of pain is NOT a long time, so just keep that in your mind. I have a splint on mine, so I removed it on the 3rd day, and that allowed some of the pressure from the tight wrapping out, which helped a lot. Positive thinking helps just as much as the painkillers. Best of luck!

I am 5 weeks post injury, 4 weeks post surgery. I injured my right foot on a wakeboard like Timmy. This has been a miserable injury, with soo much time required to heal. I had 4 screws put in my foot and at five weeks it actually feels pretty good except for the swelling after walking around on crutches too much. I am looking forward to being able to put weight back on it. I will be getting the srews out around three to four months post op. I am 34 years old and a professional pilot so i have been unable to work for the last month. Hopefully only one more month to go. Good luck to all of you. Thanks for posting it helps to get through..

Hello all, thanks for posting here,I tried to post earlier but not sure if it posted so sorry if this is duplicate, it helps to hear everyones experience with this. I Injured my right foot June 24th wakeboarding. I am 34 and was trying to land a jump like i was 20. Toughway to learn that lesson. I had surgery on July 3rd and have been counting down the days till I am able to start putting weight back on my foot. I plan on getting the 4 screws that they put in my foot taken out 3-4 months post op. I am a professional pilot and have been frustrated like alot of you not being able to get out and function normally. I was curious did anyone have a wound blister or post op blister form on your foot. At my 1 week check I had a blister, the size of a hockey puck, on my ankle that was very tender. I am now 4 weeks post surgery and feel pretty good. My foot does swell up if I am out rambling around on my crutches for too long. Good luck to all.

hi all & thanks so much for the posts. I'm feeling a lot better and have had an attitude adjustment as well! Things could certainly be worse. I am an avid gardener and was able (with the help of my brother) to get out in the garden and pick some beans yesterday which was great therapy. I have a rolling cart to sit on so that made it much easier. I'm anxious now to get the surgery done and behind me to start down the road to healing.

Hey there, it sounds like both you and Timmy are doing great!!! One thing that helps is to remain involved with the sport you love (I'm assuming wakeboarding), even if you can't do it. My friend and I are both waterskiers recovering from fractures, but we're still trying to get to the lake/tournaments, even if only to sit around and watch. It's better than being inside, and, provided you have a place to sit and elevate your foot, it's still fun. Word of caution: do NOT get on the dock, as it can sway a bit and throw you off balance. My girlfriend also has a waterproof hard cast, which I've never seen but will ask my doctor about - it allows her to swim (she had an ankle fracture that must be completely immobilized).

I have been recovering on a lake up in NW MT. It is a little tricky trying to get out on the boat dock. I spend alot of time sitting by the lake with the foot up watching boarding and skiing, from the lawn chair. Not a bad place to spend 2.5 months recovering.

This post is turning into the watersports foot injury board! It sucks that other people are injured but its good to find people going through the same issues. I had my 6 week post op appoinment on Friday, everything is healing up well the Dr said, he still wants me partial weight bearing with Crutches until 10 weeks, then he said to come in and we'll talk about taking the screw out. I'm definately keeping busy and staying involved with the sport and boating. The wife(7.5 mos pregnant) and daughter and I have just been going out on the weekends and just hangin out and floating in the water all weekend, it was kind of sad not seeing any wakeboards on the tower but it was great to just get out on our boat. I am hosting a big wakeboard festival/tournament in Illinois in 2 weeks - but my friend is letting me borrow his Kawasaki mule to ride around on all weekend.

Hey all, my friend (she's recovering from ankle fracture) and I both went to a three-event waterski tournament yesterday and crutched around all over - had a blast! Found a way to hoist myself into the boat off the dock without assistance by sitting on the side of the boat and swinging both legs (one at a time) over - looks hysterically funny and totally undignified, but it works. :-) Anyone get the ok from their doctor to swim once the stitches come out ? The lake was up to 87 degrees, which for NY is fantastic, and it was soooo beckoning for a dip...! Timmy, by partial weightbearing, do you mean you can walk in an aircast, with a crutch or a cane (right now that sounds like heaven) ? Also, I thought the hardware comes out at 12-14 weeks post op - is there hope for an earlier screw removal ? Also, anyone taking any calcium or other supplements to speed up healing that they can recommend ?

hey all,
I am now almost 4 weeks post pin removal and I am happy to report I am walking with no hardware. I gave up the crutches at 2 weeks and the air cast at 3 weeks. been doing PT 2 days a week and it is helping immeasurablly. Getting strength and flexibility back in my ankle has been the big push. After 8 weeks in a cast my achilles tendon was gone. I still walk very slow but the speed keeps picking up. So far PT has been mostly stretching, those power bands and biking. ( though I got my butt kicked last week, he made me do mountain climbers.... lots of 'em) The biggest thing has been realizing my foot isn't just going to break in half again. most of the pain is tendons and ligaments in other parts of my foot getting back in shape.
I am going to the doc on Thursday for a 4 week checkup, we'll see how that goes.......

I was told to wait at least 3 weeks to go in the lake or river - if bacteria makes its way to the screws your in trouble. He let me get it wet in the bath about 3 or 4 days after surgery. By partial weight bearing, I am supposed to use 2 crutches and keep the boot on (I have to admit around the house I cheat and use 1 or no crutches) but if I am going any distance I use both. All he said was at 10 weeks we'll "talk about" taking the screw out, not sure what that means. I am taking calcium pills and still my one a day vitamin.

Sorry, I didn't see this post until today :( My doc put me in a Carapace Pacesetter II. Check here for an idea of what it looks like.

I had the tall one which made a big difference. It has an air bladder in the insert which allows you to adjust it so it fits your leg better. The only problem I had stemmed from the air tube that ran across my shin precisely where the velcro strap went. My shin was sore for months but it definitely helped keep me from hurting my foot more.
Here's an interesting side note. The awful heat wave that has now hit Maryland has been great for my foot. I haven't had any pain from the injury in over two weeks. I'm dreading when winter hits though.
Blessings to all of you for speedy recoveries.
Anne :)

Hi Ohmeowzer, yes I had muscle spasms in my foot, along with serious pain. My foot spasmed and wanted to curl under. It was scary - that's what helped me to decide to put a fiberglass cast on versus the boot which I wanted to take off every night from the pain. By the looks of your cam walker - it looks very similar to the one I was told to wear. I'm still limping (my injury was on Feb 20/06). The top part of my foot was numb, along with my big toe - I think this lasted for about 2.5 months. I had no surgery. I had tummy surgery on June 16/06 and was prescribed Heparin for the foot swelling which the doctor now says has set me back in my foot recovery. The tummy recovery is going great but the foot is taking forever. I'm going to start in the pool this week to see if that can help. I still have lots of swelling too. Let me know if there's anything I can help answer.
Yes, I do agree with a previous poster it looks like a lot of posts are from water sports related folks - I was hoping some experience in diagnosing this injury would come from the soccer players but I think it will come from you guys instead.
Cheers everyone, Kelly 8)
