Timmy, that's an awesome article. There's a guy on my lake who had several surgeries on his ankle - was told he'd never ski again. Well, he finally found a doctor a few years back that built him an ortopedic device for his back foot that he fixed on his ski - and has been skiing the slalom course at shortline lengths since. As much as it sucks to be on crutches in the heat wave in NYC, dreaming of buoys and swimming, etc. (what I wouldn't give for a bike ride, too!!!), I keep thinking it WILL heal, even if it takes 6 months to a year - and next season will be here before I know it. :-) Does it hurt to take out the stitches ?

Nope, it doesn't hurt to get the stitches out. It is actually a relief because you can wear just a sock instead of gauze and an ace bandage and that is a lot more comfortable. (assuming you have a boot and not a hard cast) Just make sure you wait until all the scabs fall off and your scar in fully healed before going into a lake or river, you definately do not want an infection - the incision they make is a lot deeper than you think and the bacteria can attach itself to your screw and then your in trouble. My scar took about 3 weeks to heal up.

Hi all,
I went to see the doc on thurs. for my 4 week post pin removal ckeckup. (14 weeks after I jumped off a roof and smashed my foot) I am happy to report I walked in with my sneakers on. (Slight limp) and got a clean bill of health . He was checking to see if there was any grinding in the joint when my big toe was moved up and down. there was none. He recommended that I keep seeing the PT. to get the strength in my leg built up, but I don't need to go back to the doc unless I have problems. He said now it is a wait and see. some people have to have a fusion after a year or 2. Some use orthodics and others have no problems. I am hoping for the latter.

Good luck to everyone
I am going for a walk

Kevin, that is awesome news!!! If you get sick of sneakers, check out Born shoes - incredibly comfortable, like a sneaker, with arch support - you can find them at places that sell sneakers, etc. Enjoy it, and stay off the roof!!! :-)

For the watersports people: I got busted by my surgeon trying to crutch my way out of a crowded restaurant with my husband clearing the way for me - instead of being home elevating my foot, as it has not even been two weeks since my surgery. The good news was that he told me that I may be able to return to waterskiing at the end of the year, as opposed to March or April. Hey, nothing's definite, but it helps to think the light at the end of the tunnel may not be SOOOO far away!!!

Hello to everyone... it's been a while since I've posted. I'm about 3 months post surg/ had 3 screws put in. I had my Dr. appt a few weeks ago & was surprised to hear my Dr. say that having the screws removed would not really make a difference, that I am going to have the swelling/ pain. So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone can offer up a different opinion. Did your foot really feel better having the screws removed? Did you Dr. tell you that he recommended the scews to be removed?

Thanks to anyone who can help/ or offer advise.

I was doing a back dive off a diving board when my foot slipped off the board. Needless to say, a lisfranc fracture with 2 broken toes. I have been on crutches since 5/29/06. I had surgury and had pins, with 2 plates with 6 screws. i was lucky that i didn't have to have a hard cast. i had a couple of soft ones. I had my pins out 7/21/06, and go back to the Doctor in Sept. I have 6 more weeks of no weight bearing. This has got to be the worst injury I have ever had. I still have swelling if i keep my foot down for long periods of time. I still has some tingling and some numbness in my toes. I have not worked in 2 1/2 months. i just went back to work 8/7/06 for 1/2 days. I hope to be walking in Sept. or Oct. The ROBOT BOOT is uncomfortable and makes my toes tingle. I keep it lose so i keep the blood flowing.

Hello all. Since I had my stitches removed a few days ago, I've been getting sharp pains at night around where the screw is - anyone else experience this ? Is it normal ? I'm back at work, but keeping my foot elevated most of the time. Other than using the bone stimulator and actually washing my foot, I haven't done anything different, haven't banged it against anything, haven't put any weight on it.

Hi everyone. Here's something new that I have been trying to bring some strength back to my foot and its working. I know some of you may not like what I am about to say but it could be worse.

I took ballet for 10 years and I started doing my old ballet exercises and its making a difference after 5 days. I feel a slight bounce back in my step. The exercises really work all the different muscles in your feet and legs. I've only been doing the exercises for the last 5 days and already I can feel a difference. Here goes...

Anyhow, the link below gives a picture of the 5 feet positions:

This link walks you through the plies (where you bend your knees while holding on to a bar/chair and your bum goes down to the ground) in all 5 positions.

Good luck to everyone and let me know if you have any questions or require clarification.

Hello: I'm new to this site. I just discovered it today. I'm somewhat disappointed in not finding any alternative treatments for this problem except surgery. There are no articles on arthroscopic surgery either. I'm puzzled by that as well. I had a large Oak tree fall on me last January. I was told the x-rays showed no broken bones. You can guess the rest. After eight months of being told to be patient, I consulted an outside specialist. He told me I have some unhealed fractures that were not properly treated at the time of injury. He gave me a steriod injection to calm things down and sent me home to think about surgery. Is there anyone out there who healed up without an operation? I would like to know if there are any non-surgical success stories. My bones have been broken almost nine months now, I think I could wait a little longer to find the right solution for me.

Hi MizzMaggie, I have done a lot of research on the Lisfranc Fracture and have posted the website urls on page 2 of this topic.

I broke my foot 6 months ago, didn't have surgery and am SLOWLY getting the strength back in my foot. I don't have faith in the diagnosis of my injury and still don't to this day. I think that I also sprained my ankle too but it was less painful than the foot so it is just coming to the forefront now, or it could just be my whole foot is so weak.

Please read the websites as I have learned that delayed surgery isn't a guarantee that things will improve either. I hope the websites help you in your decision and pronosis.

One question, at any time did you have weight-bearing x-rays on your foot? I'm curious how many of us injured did.

Good luck and I hope I've helped. Post a reply if you have any questions.

As for my last post about ballet exercises, I think I forgot to add that in each position you are suppose to go up on your toes (the balls of your feet).

Still hobbling but hopeful, Kelly

Mizzmaggie, since you injury happened so long ago I do not know what to tell you - but from what I've read and heard is that surgery is the best route especially if you are younger - but if its been that long the recovery time might take a while.

I go for my 10 week follow up next Wed and he is scheduling me shortly after to get the screw removed! So I am looking forward to that.

Wtrskid.... I met your friend at my wakeboarding event this past weekend, I think people got pics of us on our crutches together (but I was a little 'hazy' at the time so I am not sure who took them)

Loading...

Timmy, would that have been Karen and Darren that you met ? Small world!!! Karen and I wound up on crutches within 3 days of each other, so we've both been crutching around the dock at our lake on the weekends!

As for your foot, sounds like you're getting the screw out at 12 weeks, which is awesome! How are you walking now ? Still in a boot ? Any pain ?Give me some good news - it's been 3.5 weeks since surgery, and I'm about to go nuts...

Loading...

Yeah, Darren Simoni right? - If that's who it is I've known him and his brother for a few years. My friend used to ski for U of I and remembered Karen as well. She is super cool.

I'm still in a boot and I've dropped one crutch even though i don't think I was really supposed to, he told me partial weight bearing and it doesn't feel like I am putting anymore weight on it with 1 crutch. I am not in any pain really, just stiffness from wearing the boot all the time. I feel like I could just start walking now, but I do not want to break the screw.

My wife (8 mo's pregnant) works at the hospital and seen my Doctor the other day and asked him if there was any way I could be walking shortly after my 10 week appt. so I can help get stuff ready for the baby and be walking in case she goes early. He said I was doing really good and would see what he could do to get me in right away to get the screw taken out. I am going to make sure I remind him of that at my next appt!

Yep, it's a small world! For the stiffness part, when I came off crutches after 3.5 mos. for a Jones fracture a few years back, it helped to flex/rotate my foot every morning and night - 3 sets of 25 up/down/to the side. Thanks for the good news - and though patience is NOT my virtue - listen to the doctor and don't push it!!!

Timmy,

I was just curious if you Dr. is suggesting that you have the screws removed, as mine thinks I should keep them in, he cannot say for sure that my foot would be any different with them out. I'm about 3 mo post surg. & not sure what to do.

Let us all know how you do after the screw removal, are you going in for a out pt. procedure/ under full anesthia?

Thanks for your input...
