Camp7462 - I did and it ended up going down into the arch of my foot which hurt - I think a lot like plantar fasciitus. I agree with your diagnosis about it being a muscular thing. I ended up holding on to something (like a wall) and trying to bend my knees in order to stretch the muscles. Then I got the bright idea of changing the angles of my feet and bending my knees to stretch the other muscles which led me in to the ballet exercises I was talking about.
Slow, relaxed stretching is useful in relieving spasms in muscles that are healing after an injury. Obviously, you should check with your doctor first to see if it is okay to attempt to stretch the injured muscles.
Although, with you only being 4 weeks post surgery I'd be very careful. Start out very slow and don't put any additional pressure or force on the foot as I assume you are not weight-bearing yet.
I would recommend pulling back WITH ONLY YOUR TOES while lying in bed or on the couch and doing static stretches on your calf muscle and forcing your knee down into the bed. For a more advanced exercise, do the same stretch while sitting up with a straight leg.
Let me know how it goes, Kelly

Hey all,
I was diagnosed with a lisfranc fracture on 7/30/06. Had surgery on 8/1/06. Dropped my 2 day old Harley on my right foot in a parking lot. Got the stitches out on 8/24/06. I have an appt. to get pins out on 8/30/06. The Dr. told me to expect another 4 weeks non-weight bearing. After that he said to expect another 4 weeks with minimal weight bearing. He wants to leave the screws in for about 8 months. Still have a lot of swelling and pain. On a few occasions i have stumbled and put a little weight on foot. WOW...the pain was awful.

Kelly -- thanks for the info. I'm going to call my dr tomorrow to make sure it's ok but the exercises sound like they would definitely help. In the meantime, I may try some cold compresses to see if that helps any. I also am having some achiness in the arch of my foot too, but thankfully not as bad as the calf. Again, thanks!

Camp7462 - I would do heat rather than ice to loosen the calf muscle up rather than have it contract even more.
Adlmtbob - Wecome to the club! I'm doing a study - Did you have weight-bearing xrays?
Cheers, Kelly

not yet...had my foot elevated all day and seems to have helped the swelling. Althought the pin on the outside of my foot seems to be moving out.

Timmy, how is your foot feeling ? Can you wear a sneaker yet ? Is there as deep an incision to remove the screw ? What does your rehab incorporate ?

The foot feels pretty good, I could probably wear a shoe but I am trying to listen to the Dr. and wear the boot - I'll go barefoot around the house some and it feels fine, I try not to put full weight on it yet when I do that. The bottom of my boot is actually coming apart by the heel from walking on it so much this week and last. The incision isn't that bad, it just enough for them to get to the screw, I think there is 2 stitches, I got it wet (shower, not river) after 3 days and I just have a bandaid and sock on under the boot now.
I am pretty sure the rehab will be mostly stretching and strengthening my ankle and calf. I'll fill you in next Wed. after my appt. with more info.

hey there... i had surgery on my lisfranc just shy of 3 years ago and am back here on this site trying to get some info because each day it hurts more and more... i am afraid that i will need to get the bones fused in my foot... i think i have good reason to believe so because i know someone else who had this same problem and he is in the same boat... i dont think our docs like to tell us the actual success rate of the op. A lot of the people on here posted that they were on crutches for 4 months or so and i cant believe that. when i had mine done i was on crutches for 8 and a half months... I did have screws put in my foot but they were the kind that decompose in the foot so my doc never had to go back in. after the surgery i wore an orthodic in my show every day from that day on and i am just starting to have pain now... i guess what im trying to say is that it looks like me and my doc went through all the hoops and then some and i am still screwed.. i wish you all the best of luck but from what i have heard there isnt that good of a chance at a full recovery as docs lead us to believe.

Sorry if this post appears twice - have had problems posting the first time. Anyway, I had my 6 weeks post-op evaluation and was told that I can start weaning myself off crutches s l o w l y. I'm hobbling around on one crutch most of the time, and the more I do it, the better it feels. My foot does not hurt on the surgery, but rather around the ankle, which I imagine is weak after being imobilized for so long. My calf also cramped up yesterday.
I was told I can start riding a stationary bike (which I've been doing with a boot on for about a week now) and swiming, but that I cannot put weight on my bare foot. My srew will be removed at 10 weeks post-op. The doctor said that he thinks I can start waterskiing again in December, but that a bone takes about a year to completely reform. With that in mind, I don't think I'll chance it till at least February or March, at the earliest. Timmy, how is your rehab going ? Are you in a sneaker yet ?

I just got back from my 12 week appointment (2 weeks after screw removal - removed stitches no rehab yet). Everything healed up good and I can walk now without the boot at my own pace. I have to get fitted for an orthotic insert and schedule some physical therapy and check back in 5 weeks. I have wore a regular shoe a few times earlier in the week (Loose Skate Shoe, Reef Sandals and Tennis Shoes all felt pretty decent - a little achy the next day in the morning), it felt really weird to walk in a shoe again. I am worried about my work shoes though, they are more like a dress shoe. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

Hi all - I'm 11 weeks out from surgery, getting my (2) screws out next week. I have been completely non-weight bearing all this time, though I have been going to physical therapy to increase my range of motion and keep the fluid from building up in my foot. My foot is wrapped in an ace and in a boot when I'm out, but if I'm home (unwrapped) it still turns purple when I stand up, and swells quite a bit if I don't keep it elevated. What can I expect after they take the screws out? The doctor says it will only be a couple of weeks before I can start walking, but what about the swelling and circulation issues? [Kelly2006 - I did have weight bearing X-rays, a week after my accident, so I could stand it]

Sophie,
So you are having your screws removed. I am just still so puzzled, as my Dr. does not recommend having mine removed. I have 3 screws, surgery was May 11th 2006. My foot still swells and hurts most days, more if I have been on it all day, walking more at work these past few weeks. I know I have opinions of others about what to do with requesting to have the screws removed. My Dr. told me one screw is in pretty deep, so that really scares me... I mean, how to they take these out? Yuck.
So, again, just wanting to hear your side & what your Dr. told you. Are you in the US? My Orho surgeon did not offer me any rehab or orth shoes, I am still wearing flip flops, I have no idea what I will wear when it gets cold??
Best of luck to you,
SKH Shannon

Hi,
I feel a little out of place posting as it is my husband with the injury and not me. He fell out of a plane on Aug 1, 06. Long story, it was on the ground and he was at work. Long and short of it was a 12 ft drop resulting in a lisfranc fx/dislocation. He did have immediate diagnosis and acces to top ortho specialists in our area. Surg was Aug 17 ( 6 screws and a pin.) My concern is his pain and swelling any time the foot is not elevated. We are 5 weeks post op and had stitches removed yesterday (42 of them).
I know this is normal but was wondering how long it usually lasts and how do you return to normal activities? He will continue non wgt bearing for at least 3 more weeks but is anious to get back to work and keeps talking about running again. Any advice to the cranky caregiver? I want to be encouraging but realistic. I can't see him returning to work any time soon and I would be surprised if he ever ran again!

Sophie - your swelling might be because you we're Non weight bearing for so long. I was able to put partial weight at 6 weeks and I think this helped with my swelling - I had some of the same symptoms at 6 weeks, just give it some time. After you get your screws removed it will probably help also. I only had 1 screw though - it seems like the people that have more than one have more issues with recovery. Are you taking any anti - inflammatories? Icing?
I definately recommend physical therapy and screw removal, any Dr. that deals with Athletic patients would tell you the same I believe. I also think physical therapy is very beneficial as well for a faster recovery. There are a lot of muscles in your foot you do not know about that need to be strenghthened in order to avoid further complications down the road.
I am on my 2nd day of walking without the boot at work and it definately hurts! Looking forward to starting therapy on Monday.

In response to Guest, the wife of who fell out the plane. I think that with this type of injury it can take a while to fully recover, longer than I expected. I had 3 screws and around 20 stitches, broke my foot April 28th, and I not running. My pain has improved, but I still have a limp. Is your husband doing some physical thearpy? I didn't have it offered.
Its good that he's keeping the foot up, ice helps also. He might have to wear a boot, somewhat like a walking cast when he gets the ok for walking. Is your husband having the screws removd?
Hang in there, it does get better.
