I used to have tonsilitis 12 times a year as a kid.
I had something just like mono (gandular) at the end of high school, but all tests came back negative. I too couldn't swallow for weeks, had fever, etc.
I have had fatigue since then.
The last three years my tonsils have been permanently swollen. I thought it was due to some naty wisdom teeth, but I've had them out, and thought the tonsils calmed down a little, they're still big.
I got homeopathy last year, and it REALLY helped. I was read to quit school because of the bad breath I had from the halitosis-smelling pus-stuff in my tonsils. I'd squeeze them out, and the smell was horrific. I'd taken anti-biotics which only helped so much. THe homeopathy took away that stiinky pus-ness and improved my health.
But my biggest problem now is I can't sing, and haven't been able to for years. WHen I do, I get pain in my throat--and I was meant to become a singer.
I'm finally getting to the top of the wait list to see about getting my tonsils out, but friends are saying getting the tonsils out is a bad move, that their swelling is a symptom, not a cause,a nd my body will suffer without them. One friend has recommended I remove all mucus-causing foods, and try a raw food diet.
I'm going to do it, but a hybrid diet. I'm not going to cut out all meat and cooked foods, but I'll eat mostly uncooked fruit and veg.
I hope it helps. There were complications from my wisdom teeth removal, nerves have been damaged and I have numbness throughout my mouth, so I'm cautious about getting any more surgery.
I urge you all to do as much research as possible, try cutting out dairy (my tonsils flare when I eat chocolate or cheese), keep neck warm, gargle warm sea-salt water, and I hope we all find out what's wrong with us so we can start living our lives properly again![/quote
nothing will happen to your body. i swear im getting mine taken out tomorrow hopefully. i love to sing to but my voice is a little crackily. your friends are wrong my friend is in chorus and she had hers taken out along time ago. shes sings great.so dont worry

I also get tonsil stones, it scared the c**p out of me when I first discovered this last year, my throat had been swollen to the point when I would sleep I would snore, but out of exhaustion I would not wake up leading to that bell in the back of my throat getting so swollen one morning I could almost swallow it.
I ate a lot of ice and limited myself to eating food, I went to the doctor and got perscribed a really good anti biotic in a yellow box (don't remember the name) after 3-4 days it seemed better but my tonsils were still swollen. I ended up buying a sprite from a soda machine in a can which was extremely fizzy. I was shocked within 10-15 minutes my tonsils were back to normal. I don't know if this was coincidence of the anti biotics finally kicking or did the carbonation have that much of an impact on the back of my throat.

Strep throat is caused a bacteria, responds to antibiotics and should be treated to prevent complications like scarlet fever, and also to help you feel better faster. Mononucleosis is a virus and so, can't be treated with antibiotics. It can linger on and keep coming back, making you exhausted and causing fever and white patches on your throat for months and even recur on and off for years. (My son even had BOTH strep throat AND Mono at the same time, according to his doctor).
For either condition, they can cause your tonsils to become swollen permanently and have holes like swiss cheese from the infection. (Mine are.) The holes trap food and can cause chronic bad breath. You have to use a Q tip (or water pik, i suppose) to remove these, maybe every two weeks or so. You just gently but firmly push the Q tip against the side of the tonsil, next to the hole, and it should come out. You may have to do it a couple of times. Make sure you don't smash the tonsil stones or "throat cheese" that comes out, because it is extremely disgusting smelling. Gross, but MUCH better to have it OUT of your body so your breath doesn't smell like that stuff!!
The only cure for these constant recurring tonsil problems is a tonsillectomy, where doctors remove your tonsils. The problem is, it isn't the common-place mild surgery that used to be popular in the 60s and 70s for young kids (Think Brady Bunch: Cindy got to eat lots of ice cream!) The reality is, even though they are just removing a small amount of non-essential tissue in your throat, it is a major surgery for anyone except perhaps small children. You will be ON YOUR BACK for minimum two weeks. It is really tough on you. It will help get rid of these problems, but it is a big decision for teens and adults to have this surgery.
Best wishes, and talk to your doctor. Ask him about what is going on with you. Tell him what you think, and why you are scared. Sometimes it takes a couple of visits to assess the situation accurately, rule things out, and get to know how your body works, and what needs to be done. If you have visited your doctor, and things aren't better, call the office and tell the nurse. They will help you know what to do.
