I have( had now) been on Celexa for over a year....at first I lost a bit of weight and then gained a whooping 25 lbs or so. I started out before the drug of weighing 110. Now I am 133. It is the most depressing thing ever! when does someone actually see a change in weight loss? :$
I am so glad that I found this.... I just started tapering off of my celexa. I am a 29 female, have been on it for the past 4 years and gained a total of about 45 pounds. I finally feel that I am at a point in my life where i no longer need help from medication. The only thing i am upset about is the weight that just seems to come out of no where! Has anyone experienced a surge in the weight gain while weening off the medication? I actually am trying weight watchers and I am gaining weight!!!!! YIKES!
I cant believe how much I have gained on Celexa. I have been working out and eating really, really well! Im afraid to get off of the pill because im afraid my anxious feeling will come back and I couldnt stand that. Im on 20mg right now and was wondering if anyone thinks it will help to lower my dosage to 10mg? :$
I cant take this anymore

I am 41 years old and my doctor put me on Celexa after having a hysterectomy, i was on the drug for more then 7 years. It did make me feel better, but i went from weighing 125 to my highest weight of 240. I have had three children and I had never had a weight problem. I was afraid to get off the drug since i have suffered with depression, but after over 7 years i decided to get myself off the drug. i began to work out with a private trainer and started eating healthier. i have lost 92 pounds now, and in the past when i tried to diet on the medication i could never lose any weight. i feel so good now. i never thought i would be a person who looked forward to working out. and the physical workout and eating healthier has made me feel better then i have in years. there is no question in my mind that the Celexa was the cause of my large amount of weight gain. i am back in a size 6 and i was wearing a 18W at the time i stopped taking the drug. it has taken a year to get the weight off, but worth it!!!! good luck! You can do it!
at least i know there is hope for the weight lose ive been off celexa for a month only lost 5 pounds i was in the same situation as you weighing 125 now 210 hoping to lose a lot more there is hope for us people dont give up on your selfs :-D
I took Celexa for about 5 years, and, although I put on probably 20 or thirty pounds, I never considered that it was the drug. Then last February, my doctor put me on Welbutrin. It took awhile to level out, but by June, I could tell I had lost weight. Now, 10 months later, or so, I have lost at least 30 pounds! And the great part it, I am still losing. It has been much easier not to over eat, so I don't at all feel as though I have been on a diet! Try Welbutrin!
When i started celexa yeah i gained weight because I ate like a pig!!! But then I got serious about wanting to lose weight so I started journaling (counting my calories) and exercising on a regular basis. I've lost 40 lbs ON CELEXA. Are you being honest with yourself and what your eating. Try writing it down for a week and then you might see where your real problem is.
I am 31 years old and have gained 20 lbs in a year and a half of taking the Celexa. I have been told it might be because of the drug, but after reading all of your posts, I am sure it is! I didn't change up anything, other than entering my 30s, and I keep gaining weight. It hasn't stopped and leveled out yet. I am VERY active and there is absolutely no other explanation for my weight gain.
I have gained weight on celexa going from 10mg to 60 mg I gained like 10 lbs! I backed off to 40mg and will be requesting to go off this medicine.I had lost like 30 lbs before the celexa and am still overweight so I am really upset about gaining 10 lbs. This stuff makes you get soo hungry all the time! Its like being on steroids. Try the insulin resistance diet by cheryl hart its a great diet and very easy! Its for regular people and not just diabetics and you will be surprised at all the food you can have.I lost the 30 lbs on that.
Hope this helps! Melinda

I am a 39 year-old male. I have been on Celexa for almost one year. I have gained 20 pounds. I run and workout regularly and I can't get the weight off. The weight gain has been in my thighs and stomach.
I am in the process of getting off Celexa now. I am down to 10mg and next week I will alternate days.
UGH!

When I first went on celexa it was only 5 mg and I lost 6 pounds with no effort. It curbed my emotional eating. I have gained back 6 pounds, but I went through a period of depression where I was emotionally eating like crazy and not working out as much. I got my dose upped to 10 mg. I lost 1/2 a pound and the only reason that I can't lose more is due to the habit of emotional eating I created while in depression. I'm sure the rest of the weight will come off as soon as I kill that habit. My doctor said that most people don't gain weight and those that do are woman who are overweight to begin with, but I did gain some weight on cymbalta, also take into account your body type.
I've been taking Celexa for the about 1.5 years and I have to say it made me gain about 15 pounds. It's very frustrating. I wasn't overweight when I started taking it. I wouldn't consider myself actually overweight now but I'm a chunkier in areas whereas before I wasn't. I was taking Zoloft before that for about 8 months and only gained 5 pounds because I was underweight. I stayed at that weight fo a while until I started taking Celexa and then noticed the correlation after taking Celexa for about a few months. I stayed on it because it has helped me but I'm going to start taking Pristiq tomorrow and I hear it works very well with depression and anxiety. It also doesn't make you gain weight. It actually decreases your appetite so I'm all about that. While I've been taking Celexa my eating habits haven't changed so that's how I know it was the drug that had me gain the weight. I also work out! I hope this helps. Good luck!
All i have to say is this drug sucks. Doc put me on because i had a "situational" depressing year. Now the years over, the situations over and i am climbing towards 170lbs at 5 2". I have been mystified by this horrible body of mine. I thought is was from having a baby but my baby is now 4 and everyone asks when i'm due with number two. I am pregnant with celexa not a human! I stopped the 20 mg dose about two weeks ago after finding out it was from celexa (from the internet). Thanks for the warning Doc. Forums like this are the best source of truth. I am now huge, angry and going through lovely withdrawals. I refuse to go back. I just wish i knew sooner before i destroyed my metabolism. Wish me luck. I'd like to swim without a ski jacket on this summer. Wearing one now from the cold sweats of the kick!
PS It doesn't work for migraines either, save yourself-try Replax (non-narc) or Fioricet (30% barb). :$

I am 37 and I have recently lost 60 lbs while on Celexa. I have been on the drug for 8 years. Weight loss can be done while on Celexa.
I am 34-yrs old, have been on Celexa for about 6 months, and have gained 35 lbs without changing anything else in my diet, excerise, and overall life routine during that time. I have my annual physical in 2 days, and will be reading all these posts before then, so I can talk to my doctor with some specific info!
I'd only been on an anti-depressant once before, in 1995 for migraines, and that was Elavil/amitryptiline. It didn't help my headaches, but did help me oversleep every alarm...then after a head injury in '07, I had the worst mood swings, and lack of control over my emotions, so doctors decided to put me on Celexa, and it was amazing for getting my emotions back on track. I've loved that. He specifically told me Celexa was one of the best for not having weight gain, so I'd hate to see the worst!
I don't want to lose the control I have over my emotions again, that I'd lost for a year, but I can't keep gaining weight like this. The head injury & lack of exercise that followed had already lead to me gaining 25 lbs back that I'd lost over an 8 month time period, but then I stayed steady for 4-5 months until the Celexa expansion (and it seems to be primarily around the waist, as if I have a beer belly, though I haven't had alcohol in a couple years).
