Try Wellbutrin XL! It caused no gain or loss for me, been on it for years. My doc put me on buspar for anxiety though a few months ago, and it caused me to gain 5lbs in 2 months, which is very upsetting to a 5'2" 28-year old who works out 5 days a week and eats about 1300 calories a day.

I have been taking Celexa for a long time and have experienced weight gain from this and other medications. I am thinking that may be it is due to the excessive dry mouth and thirst experienced while taking this antidepressant. I know that when I'm thirsty, I will eat more.

Sometimes anti-depressants such as SSRI's and other psychotropic medication cause your metabolism to slow down. So that when you do eat what you normally do, your metabolism being a little slower than normally, doesn't burn the calories off as well and you gain weight even though calorie consumption remains the same.

So I have been On Celexa for 3 years and gained 50 lbs. I'm 29 years old and take the medication for panic disorder. I don't drink alcohol, I'm on the paleo diet, and do crossfit 3 days a week and run 3 miles 3 days a week. I've been extremely athletic my whole life. I played strong safety in college and midfielder in LAX in college. It's really crazy with all the activity and healthy diet that all I have lost is 15 lbs. The rest will not come off I have definitely peaked. My buddy and I were both on the same dosage and he's my work out partner. He stopped cold turkey 3 months ago drinking a beer every time he felt withdrawals and he has lost 60 lbs and is in the best shape of his life. We are very similar body types and have been since high school. Same age, same diet, same workouts, except I'm on 10 mg celexa and he drinks alcohol. Extremely bizarre. How does taking a pill slow my metabolism so much? It drives me mad but the withdrawals of quitting Celexa make me feel crazy. I feel dizzy, like the chemicals in my brain are all erratic and its like I'm on the outside of my body looking in. I immediately run to the drug in fear of not having control over my actions and thoughts.

I'm 21 years old and was put on celexa for about a month now. Maybe it effects people different, but it made me not want to eat at all and I went from 126 to 118 lbs in 6 days. and it makes me very ill and makes me want to sleep all day.

I'm 20, and I lost 9 lbs. in 5 days while on Celexa. Then the weight loss slowed (probably because I'm a small girl to begin with, and was down to 96 lbs.). After 3 weeks I quit taking it because I was down to 93 lbs. I'm on Bupropion now, and I haven't had any problems with my eating habits. In fact, I haven't really had any negative side effects since the first couple weeks I was taking it. :-)

i am 19 years old. i've been on Celexa for less than a year and gained 50lbs. 50 freaking lbs. i thought i had anxiety before. this medicine was supposed to help me, not blow me up and leave me depressed.  i'm in my first year of college and i wear a size 15. i was  a seven when i graduated before i started celexa. my doctor never mentioned weight gain as a side effect and when i brought it up to her she flat out denied it was the medicine. i've been off the meds for about a week and no changes yet.

I too have gained weight on Celexa.... 25lbs. I have ALWAYS been thin, and in fact couldn't stay over 100 pds until I was close to 40 even after having three children... I weighed 105 when I started taking Celexa, and over about 8 months I quickly gained this weight which is mostly in my belly (like a pregnant belly or beer belly) like others have described... I DO NOT eat more than I used to, in fact I EAT LESS.  I really loved the way I felt on the celexa at first, but now I'm not so sure this is worth it because I hate the way I look, I've tried exercizing as well, NOTHING works...  I believe it when I hear that celexa changes your matabolizm, because there is no way I would suddenly put on 25 pounds at the age of 43 without increasing what I eat or anything, and it all started shortly after starting celexa.... it works well, but I need to find something else and lose this effing weight...

Wow, I had no idea there were so many people suffering with weight gain on this medication :(  I'm sorry to hear that!  I have been fortunate so far - my appetite has been suppressed, and I'm losing weight.  Not a lot though, just a few pounds (the ones I wanted to go away, anyway).  But, I have to say that I am very fortunate as I'm a naturally thin person with a fast metabolism, and medication (except for high-estrogen birth control pills) has never affected my weight.  The only thing that's ever made me gain weight in the past was simply depression and therefore eating a ton of junk & not exercising.  I do really hope that you all are able to lose the weight; it is so incredibly annoying that these drugs cause weight gain when you're trying to BE HAPPY and improve self-esteem!

I was on Celexa for almost 5 years and had gained 35lbs.  I never associated the weight gain with the medication UNTIL I finally came off of it.  Unbeknownst to me I had dropped 20lbs without changing a thing (besides quitting the pills).  This is the weight I am naturally suppose to be.  I firmly believe Celexa slowed down my metabolism so much that I COULD NOT loose weight while on it (believe me, I dieted, exercised, etc.).  Other than weight gain, the other side effects are pretty undesirable...no sex drive, constant yawning, unable to fall asleep and strong desire to not wake up, short term memory sucks, constantly doing blank stares, always feeling bloated, etc.  I REFUSE to go back on it. Ever.

I have been on Celexa for a little over a year now. I was 145 pounds when I started taking it, and now I weigh 190. Its miserable! I've never EVER been this heavy before. I was sick a lot last winter, with lots of medical bed rest, so I know that accounts for some of the weight gain. But even on a calorie restricted diet [1200 to 1500 calories a day, cutting out crappy food and going for fresh and raw foods], with light exercise for a 6 weeks, I gained weight instead of loosing it.
Since being on it, I have noticed that I crave carbs and sweets well after I am full. And often, about 40 minutes after a decent meal, my brain tells me I'm positively starving! Its frustrating and this kind of loss-of-body image is not helpful for self esteem issues that people on Depression medications already have. I wish we could wear sings over our heads "its the medication not my self control!" lol
Going back to my Dr next week and I can't wait to get off of this c**p! Going to try Welbutrin, I've heard it might possibly tip the balance and help with weight loss.

I totally agree that it slows down..nearly stops the metabolism. I also tried good diet/exercised with zero results.

I am so happy to hear that you were able to drop the weight though, I bet you feel great now!

i've been on 40 mgs of celexa for 1 & 1/2 yrs. and Definitely thought that it worked very well for my anxiety & depression. BUT i have gained A Lot of weight: 50 lbs! i'm 27 yrs old and have been very thin my entire life! even at 9 mnths pregnant i only weighed 120lbs! until i started researching "celexa & weight-gain" and read all these posts, i had no idea that celexa caused weight-gain! i havent known why the heck i've been gaining all this weight but now that i know it happens to almost Everyone, i finally understand! i've been off of it cold-turkey for almost a week-and-a-half and the with drawl symptoms are Horrible! i am having such a hard time actually that i am considering going back on it so that i can wein off gradually instead of this cold-turkey c**p b/c i almost cannot deal w/ the way i have felt since i stopped taking it. However, now that i know it's why im so Fat i am re-thinking my decision to start taking it again. but i Have to ask: is it Worth being Depressed and Not taking an anit-depressent Just so u won't gain weight? i'm not sure. . . ? what does everyone else think about it?
