It takes a short time but you will lose it. Esp if you are that young! I went off celex at age 23 and lost 40 lbs in 4 mos. I was so upset about the weight gain. I got on the med again. I really needed it and Ive gained a lot of weight over the past 5 yrs. Im doing ww and it is taking forever to lose it. I know it is the medicine. I can work out more, eat less etc and I lose very slowly if at all. I feel like so many of these meds cause weight gain and the doctor's wont admit it. I have done the research and Im living proof. Try running, yoga and other methods. They are better than the upset of gaining weight and feeling lower confidense

I've had the opposite experience with celexa and lost 15 lbs on it. I loved it! Unfortunately, I switched meds to treat bipolar and have gained twenty lbs. I hate it so much and do not know how to get rid of this extra weight. Like some of the other people who posted before me all my extra weight has gone to my mid-section and looks bad on my slight frame. I would love to hear some suggestions as to how people have lost weight after going on psych meds besides the obvious one of working out and eating well. Those are "duh" suggestions.

Hello, my son has been on this for 13 months he has gained so much wt. Both of his Drs said it is not from celexa he just needed to exercise and eat better. So we have and guess what he hasn't lost one lb. He is now getting stretch marks all over. I'm so sad . I don't want this for him but he has OCD very bad. No Dr believes that the wt gain is from this med but it is. I really wish we could take him off of this,I think I will ask the Dr next month to stop this med and see what happens. What do you think about stopping this med?

I used to think that too... Just wait. And really not a lb? I guess it effects everyone differently so to say accept it is a little ignorant since alot of people experience extreme weight gain it's pretty obvious the medication has alot to do with that especially if diet and lifestyle are kept the same.

How did you make out coming off Celexa? I'm in the exact same boat and want to do the same, but am so afraid I WON'T lose the weight.

I too have been gaining weight on Celexa. It has helped me with anxiety and I feel much more calm and not so crazed but I can't take the weight gain. It is very rapid. Am going to try to wean off this stuff and go back on Wellbutrin which is much more expensive with no insurance. I would also like to try nature remedies if anyone knows of any that have worked.  I enjoyed reading all of these post.

Did you lose weight on the lower dose? I'm in the same boat and going to try a lower dose.

Did lowering the dose help you lose weight? I'm in the same boat, I've gained 30lbs in 1.5 years and it won't come off so we've lowered my dose from 20mg to 10mg. We are going to wait 6 weeks to see if I can drop some weight. I'd like to know if its worth trying.

I am taking celexa as well and have gained 40 lbs. It's all going to my stomach. But I say part of it is not only the medication itself, but also it has to do alot with our appetite.  It makes me hungry so I eat more, in which need to learn to cut the calories. Try eating smaller meals and see if that doesn't help with your weight and cut out the softdrinks. They are no good for us anyway. Diet coke just makes you gain even more weight. Cut down on the sugar. If you like eating sweets then you need to eat it in moderation.

I just turned 53, I've been on Celexa for 12 years, and I've gained 80 pounds.  I'd always blamed the weight gain on "turning 40, but a year ago my doctor added lithium and I gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks ( got off it immediately and still haven't lost that weight) So I have finally come to realize that the weight gain is a result of the meds.  For the past few years I hate going out in public because I am so embarrassed about the way I look.

I quit smoking 6 weeks ago and I knew I had to really watch what I ate, and I managed NOT to gain anything.

I took a good look in the mirror and realized that between getting older and being fat I'm depressed anyway, so why should I stay on the celexa?? I stopped taking Celexa a week ago. MY brain is fuzzy and forgetful, I'm weepy, I get upset about small things, and I keep trying to sleep all the time.  But I have to see this through.

When I first went on antidepressants I would feel bad about all the years I'd lost because I was depressed all my life. Now I feel bad about the years I have spent hiding from society because I am so fat..........

I exercise 5-6 times a week with a trainer and follow a strict paleo diet. i have been doing this for a few years now and the ONLY change i made was starting celexa for my pms symptoms. After 6 months I gained 25lbs...making me heavier than when i was pregnant. Just because you didn't gain weight doesn't mean that it is not the cause of weight gain for other people.

I've been on celexa for 2 1/2 years now and I've gained over 35 lbs. Now that I've seen this board, I'm going to take myself off the medication as soon as I can.

Hello,

I was on Citalopram 40mg for 2 years. I am a 37 y/0 male and while in the med I gained 15lbs. The funny thing is this is with moderate to aggressive exercise! My diet didn't change much while on the med, but my attitude definitely did. The med made me feel better but very lazy and flat emotionally. Therefore working out was a challenge, but I did it. Now I've been off for 3 weeks and my attitude is aggressive and poor. However I've been committed to working out. Over the past 3 weeks I have lost 3 lbs. it didn't come off until week 3 and this is with an hour in the gym 4-5 times per week (2 mile run and 35 mins of strength training). I really don't like the little white pill and wish the brain zaps and headaches/dizziness would stop... But at least my hard work in the gym is paying off. So, the only advice I can offer is ... Workout moderately 3-5 times per week, don't diet but change your lifestyle and eat healthy every 2-3 hours! Do this as faithful as you took the little white pill and the weight will come off!

It so crazy to see how many people have gained weight on celexa. I am a 32 y/o female and I have been on 20mg now for almost three weeks. It has sepressed my appetite alot. I sometimes have to make myself eat. So far I have lost 12lbs.
