hey i'm sixteen and i've been on the depo shot for just over a year and i lost about fifteen pounds and went down two pant sizes!! i was small before but now i am even smaller i didn't gain any weight at all, but my moods have gone crazy and i can't control them, i often feel like crying for absolutely no reason and i get upset over the dumbest things. My thoughts are that it's the shot because i was a very happy person 24/7 before i started the shot....just a thought.
i'm on my 2nd shot and its june now, since january i've lost 40 pounds.
its weird because i was told i was most likely to gain weight.

Over 3 years ago i got the depo shot, i just got one shot and within a month i had gained 40 pounds. This shot has ruined my body and i think it needs to be looked at more closely. I wasn't informed of this side effect and i ask alot of questions when going on something new. I still eat healthy and run 3-4 times a week and i cant loose a pound. I look in the mirror and i feel sick. I was always skinny before and i've always tried my best to stay healthy and this is where it's gotten me.
I only had two shots of the Depo, but that was enough!! I went from a size 5 to a size 10 in two months!! That was 5 yrs ago, to this day I can't loose the weight, even though I've tried everything from just eating as healthy as possible to several diets! I have never had a weight problem in my life and all the sudden I can't keep it off!!
I have been on and off (mostly on) the depo shot for 3 years. I have gained 20 pounds since being on it. I have always been underweight (4'11" and 78lbs) from the time I was 13 until I got on the shot at 23 yrs old. I notice when I am off the shot for a little while my appetite is greatly reduced. As soon as I go back on the shot I am STARVING all the time! My biggest weight gain was in the second year I was taking it, now it has slowly declined to about a rate of 1 lb a month. I am hoping when I get off I can drop this weight! ugh!
Hi All
Ive been searching the net for answers to this but no joy. Does any one know of any health risks of using Anti Estrogens and Ephedrine whilst on the Dep Provera injection?
Thanks xx

:-) I have been on the Depo for 8 years, i decided to have a break from it to check my cycle would be ok. As soon as i came off the Depo i immediatly gained 4ilbs, and continued to put on weight. Putting on 7ilb in total. Needless to say..I couldnt wait to go back onto the Depo. My breasts went up a cup size when i came off it and i was heavy and puffy all the time. The Depo for me keeps my weight down.
The only difference i find in my eating habbits is that i like different types of food when im on it and off it. e.g. craved savory foods when i wasnt on it. I prefer sweet foods when im on it.
It works great for me and shoudlnt put people off because everyone is different !

I am 24 years old and have been on Depo for 2 years now ... I too started at the 135-140 range and have gone up to the 165-170 range. I changed nothing about my diet or exercise regimine. I always had a tendancy to gain weight in my hips and thighs, but my stomach was ALWAYS flat and defined. Not anymore ... Now I have a noticable "spare tire" and my arms have cellulite. I feel disgusting but I also love the benifits of Depo.
I am currently on the fence between staying on Depo or switching birth control methods. I have kicked up my workout routine a few notches this past month and if I gain any more weight by the time my next shot is due in November, I quit. These are supposed to be the prime years of my life ... I shouldnt be hiding under piles of fabric just so I dont have to deal with my period.

Im 28. I went on Depo back in 2000. The day I walked into my doctors to get it I was 136 lbs (Im 5'5"). In about 6 months time I was up to 155 lbs, and miserable. I cannot remember how many doses I actually took, although I really should call and find out. It wasnt for any more than 2 years- if that. My boyfriend was afraid of me-A grown man, just back frm bootcamp and the poor guy walked around his own house on eggshells. It made me crazy! I felt bloated constantly, even worse-I looked bloated. When I look in the mirror, or saw pictures of myslef it brought me to tears. Ive gained more weight over time on my own, but Im certain that if I had not gone on depo I would never in a million yrs gained so much. I was 180 lbs at my heaviest, and Im now back down to a size 12-11 on a good day :-( about 160) This is all since 2000. Oh, and my boobs-I went from a nice vickie secret "C" to an overwhelming DD. It sucks. I wouldnt wish this on anyone. As I mentioned b4, Im 28 now. 30's just around the corner and I cannot allow myself to dwell an longer. Im walking 2 miles a day, eating heathily (Although I always ate fairly well) and cutting back on the drinkie drinks : P I definitly dont need the extra sugar!
Good luck to everyone else who has been effected by Depo. Like you, I too am still looking for answers

I am quite stunned that I am not the only one experiencing this!!!
I am one of the “reverers” however – got the weight gain AFTER I quit the depo. I had my last shot in Jan this year (so none since Apr) and since have just continually gained weight. I have not changed eating habits, exercise patterns (if anything I am exercising more due to the slow creep of the bulge!) and the weight just keeps appearing each month – and I have no explanation for it whatsoever! Im 27, no kids or nothing else that it could be explained by …… until I read all these posts!!
Currently up 13kg (that’s over 28 pounds I think?) impressive for 5 months isn’t it!! ’m also bloated, particularly moody and STILL yet to get a period.
Interestingly enough, I have been on this stuff for 12 YEARS … and am now really worried after reading all these posts ……

I have lost half a stone since coming off depo and going back on the pill. This is with no real effort. It was never a problem to lose weight during the 8 years i ahve been on depo. I must say i had a bigger appetite on depo which has halved since changing back onto the pill 2 packets ago. I dont think any contraceptive can be blamed for weight gain. You are what you eat at the end of the day.
I gained 50+ lbs on the depo. I was in the army so I worked out very frequently and my diet never changed. My doctor put me on the depo because i get chronic migraines(they didn't give me much of a choice). needless to say my migraines are worse and I have not been able to lose the weight and I got off of the depo back in 2005! I'm supposed to be getting married in two years and I really don't want to look like this by that time. I used to be 125 lbs and now I can't seem to get below 180!!!!
I've been on Depo since 2006 and have gained 10+ pounds, and it's driving me crazy! My belly and breasts look bloated, in fact, I look and feel pregnant. My hair's falling out, and I'm scared of what it can do to my bones! The next shot is scheduled for the end of January 2009, so I called my doctor's office and asked to schedule a much earlier time to see him and discuss other options. I love not having a period and Depo does what its suppose to do, yet its just not worth it anymore. I'm tired of wincing whenever I look in the mirror or avoid having my picture taken. I plan on posting any post-Depo results by the end of March.
I've been on depo for almost a year now and I've been losing weight my doctor doesn't understand why and neither do i and i it isnt bad enough i was already small to begin with my appetite never increased and im afraid i might become underweight If you have the answer to my problem please let me know.
I am nearly 47 years old and I have used Depo for many years. I was never heavy before its use and when I started I lost some weight. However, in the last 6 to 7 years I have gained weight gradually and in the last couple of years I have been unable to reduce this. I have gone from UK size 12 to size 16 and growing. I think I am ready to give it up, there's more to life than not having a period or having crappy pms!
