I am so happy I read this post...I have been on depro for about 1 1/2 years now and when I started I was at 160lbs. I am now at 190lbs. I have done the same-diet, exercise (running) etc. It's so depressing. I do not look forward to getting my curse back every month, if there is anyway I can lose weight it's well worth it. This is a side effect EVERYONE should know about-my dr forgot to mention it!

i was on depo for three years and absolutely loved it. i began to notice that my weight had decreased by about two pounds every time i went in for my shot. Since discontinuing my use i have been steadily gaining weight. the weight gain began about 9-10 months after stopping my injections and my period becoming regular again. im 5'9'' and stayed in the 130-140 lbs range. now i'm at 160 lbs. i have always been very active with an extremely healthy diet, the only thing that has changed is my use of depo. my doctor said that the weight gain is a result of changing hormone levels.

yes your appetite does increase with depo because mine sure did...However, i don't think it has anything to do with your metabolism though. If you know your appetite has changed...its on you to make sure that you eat healthier because if you go around eating everything and eating unhealthy foods all the time...then of course you are going to gain a lot of weight. Just know not to reach for the bad stuff, if you wasn't before...be on a clean diet...what i mean by clean is no pork, no beef, nothing fried, no carbs except good carbs like sweet potatoes, etc....make sure your lunch and dinner includes a meat (fish or chicken breast), a green veggie, and a good carb...exercise....I get tired of people complaining about the shot made them gain weight...no you gain it on your own by not watching what you eat and not exercising, its only a appetite stimulant.

I've recently been put on the shot and knew about alll the side effects. My biggest concern was gaining weight! Esspecially because i stoppped wrking out everyday not tooo long before i started DEPO. Since then, i've been able to have a hearty appetite on my ADD medication, my metabolism has increased and i feeel great. Im completely happy with my weight and trust me i do not eat healthy! i live with a dad and 2 brothers!

Personally, i think depo works differently with everybody.
for example, when i went to my doctor for birth control i asked to be put on Lo Estren because my friend is on it and it doesnt make her gain weight therefore i wanted to be perscribed! but turns out this route is working perfectly for me!

i am a bit concerned on hearing how unhealthy it is not to get ur period anymore, but i got my first spotting today and i wanted to cry!
no more messy heavy flows for this lil thangggg!:-)

It's been 5 months since my last shot and I feel awful! I actually took a couple pregnancy tests because I feel and look pregnant. Bloating and SEVERE breast tenderness are about to drive me crazy! I see everyone on here seems to be having the weight problem but can anybody tell me what to do to help the problems or how long it will take for all of the drug to leave my system? I just want to feel like my normal self again I went from 130 to 160 in 6 months without any change in diet or exercise, I'm only 20 so I don't think this is natural aging weight gain or anything like that. My doctor won't believe Depo is the problem and she seems irritated that I'm coming off of it. As for me, I'm not going back on any BC-condoms from here on out!

I just started Depo and unfortunately my doctor didn't fully inform me or give me any material about it. Then I heard about the bone loss and weight gain from it... But I have been on it for 2 months and lost 15pounds. I was never really skinny, but I'm just a little relieved to hear that other people lost weight from it too.

Wow - I could have written this story! My last depo shot was in February and I'm praying that this weight gain will stop. I have done everything I know to do. I have always exercised 6 days a week, track my calories, etc and nothing is working. I work with a RD and she seems to think I'll notice a change for the better once my cycles are back to normal - I sure hope so!

Hi, I came off the Depo injection last christmas (End of December '08) My periods re appeared in November this year and have been regular so far (Had 3 now) And the weight loss?!! It's great, I have lost 2.5 stone (33lb) since about September, I was on the injection for 10 years so fair enough that it took nearly a year to wear off. I came off it as my doctor said my ostradial (?) levels were too low. Which I wasn't happy about as I loved the freedom being on the injection gives but I suppose I had put the weight gain down to getting older (I'm 35 now) So now I have the body back (well, nearly!) that I had before. Just wish I'd done it years ago, the weight gain was so gradual and not sudden at all as I'd been told by friends can happen so I didn't make the connection but now I know, there truly was a thin person waiting to get out!

I have been on DP since November 2008. Prior to the shot, I had one week a month that I felt good and the other three weeks were very painful. I have to take the shot every 10 weeks because if I don't my body starts with the same pains, almost like it is craving the shot. I have gained over 18 pounds and have every side effect that you can imagine. The mood swings and headaches are terrible. Luckilly, I am 38 and have a beautiful daughter so the next step is a full hysterectomy and I can't wait. Hopefully after April 8th, I will feel better and be able to get back to my life and maybe enjoy this time.

You guys all realize that every body is different and will react to drugs in different ways, right? Hormones are the same! The first time I was on depo I gained 15 lbs in 3 months, after a year I quit taking the shots because I could no longer afford them. The second time I went on depo 4 years later I lost 40 lbs in two months and looked almost sickly (I tried to counteract the weight gain by taking in about 500 less calories a day... big mistake), but I'm still on depo and now I'm back to a healthy weight. your body changes and so do your existing hormone levels, and every single body is different so to compare and contrast reactions is ridiculous. Just because you take the same shot doesn't mean anything. It all depends on the levels of estrogen and progesterone your body was producing prior to taking the shot, for the first 30 days your body continues to produce those hormones until it realizes that the something else [depo] is producing it now and then ceases production. That's why it is common to not have periods. Every birth control works in a similar fashion, it makes your body think its pregnant already and therefore will not release an egg or the uterine lining associated with menstrual cycles. This is also why in a lot of cases taking birth control increases your appetite. If you ever have the chance, research all the different types of birth control and compare the side effects to the symptoms of pregnancy. Mood changes, appetite changes, hair loss increases, and many more.
Also it is a really bad idea to be on the same birth control longer than 3 years, it can cause damage to your uterus and the estrogen/progesterone producing glands. You need to give your body a rest in between birth controls and change them periodically. I'm sure your doctors or clinicians have explained this to you, if not you need to ask them at once.
Never be afraid to ask questions. If you're embarrassed to, well, then you should probably not be sexually active.

I would also like to add that 1200mg of calcium is a great idea to protect your bones. Also, from the mouths of my college Biology teacher, my gynecologist and my private doctor, a prenatal vitamin is the best choice. (Vitamin D is helpful, but we all know its calcium that helps your bones.) Please be sure not to take more than 1300-1400 mg of calcium, it can lead to nasty side effects (calcium deposits as well as very hard stools). Calcium deposits are usually responsible for humps on the upper and lower back.

Hi I was on dep provera last year and it ended in December - yet i'm still having huge amount off effect (awful bleeding!) and a massive weight gain. I'm 4ft10 age 26 and i used to be a year ago 7 stone 10/12 (depending what i eat that day) now i'm 8 stone 10 (last week going onto 9stone), i'm on a liquid diet now and from the begining of the year till now in August i cannot shift the weight. I go the gym whenever i can, i quit eating bread, pastry, chocolate and strictly have a high protien diet.

I want to know is there a way i can loose weight after depo provera? Has anyone successfully lost any weight once all the effect is out of the body? I been told by gyntologist (not sure how u spell it) that it take a full year for it to be out of the system, once it out of my body - will i start losing weight?
