Wow. I have been a nurse for 16 years and have never came across this problem. I started having the "baby movement" sensations a few months ago. At first it was very infrequent. It didn't hurt but I thought it curious how it felt so much like a baby kicking and turning. I have 3 children so I know well the sensation. It is always in the same place in an area about the size of my open hand. Just below and to the right of my navel. So not in the typical area you normally feel quickening. Sometimes it is the feeling of thumps or fluttering. Often it's a pulling or pushing sensation. It can be in rapid or slow succession with no set pattern or frequency. I thought it must be some kind of spasm since I have been having regular periods I didn't think I was pregnant. It has become more frequent over the last few weeks. Over the last few days, it has been several times a day, all day and all night. Sometimes it lasts a few minutes, sometimes hours. I had my husband watch and feel my stomach and he could see and feel the movements too so I was relieved that I wasn't crazy. I started to worry that I may have an ectopic pregnancy, especially since I had some bright red spotting this morning and last week right after my period. I am 47 years old and I have never had spotting! I know it is possible to have periods even while pregnant so I called the doctor and went in as a walk-in. The sensation had stopped during the morning hours but had started again before the exam. The doctor was able to see the movements as well but didn't seemed overly concerned. He did however, have blood work drawn and is sending me for a vaginal ultrasound in the morning. He said the greatest concern is that it may be an abdominal aortic aneurism (AAA). He questioned the possibility of pregnancy and I admitted that it is possible. We ruled out anything to do with my appendix since I had that removed as a child. He also mentioned ovarian cysts, which I have had two rupture in the past and cause severe internal bleeding. The first when I was very young went undiagnosed, but after the second a few years ago, I knew what had happened the first time. The second rupture required emergency surgery but they were able to repair and save my ovary. Neither time did I have this sensation of movement. Just excruciating pain and the symptoms that go along with hemorrhage. I had all 3 of my children vaginally with no complications with delivery except a retained piece of placenta that caused excessive bleeding with my last child. Twenty-seven years ago I had no epidural with my first but I did with my 10 and 6 year olds. I have only had the two abdominal surgeries with the last being about 9 years ago.
I am surprised that there does not seem to be any real answers posted. Apparently, based on the number of posts I have found here and on other sites, it’s a fairly common phenomenon. Hopefully after my tests, I’ll be able to offer a little insight.

Ok, I had some bloodwork drawn and a vaginal ultrasound last week. Doc called me Friday and kindly apologized for ruining my weekend and gave me permission to be mad at him if he is wrong. They found something on my ovary that has to be looked at closer. So I'm going back on Monday for more bloodwork and an MRI. My weekend isn't ruined, it's been hectic as usual. I won't worry until there is something to worry about...but I am still awake at 5am. Guess I might be a little curious as to what it is. Doc should have just called me on Monday!
Any updates Tsalagi63? My kicks started yesterday. Happen on during the day today but they are going crazy now since I'm layingdown. Thanks!
Doc left a voicemail for me...tests were negative! Next step is to see a GI doctor. I have a follow-up appt. next week, I can ask more questions then. The thumping has let up quite a bit, not near as frequent or forceful but still in the exact same place. It's back to the way it was before it went crazy and I had the spotting (which is what really made me go to the doctor in the first place). It's always more frequent while laying down.
I'll let yall know what the next doctor thinks...at least the really bad stuff has been ruled out.
