I took up pot smoking pot after a ~25 year hiatus and stopped again after eighteen months or so. It's has been two weeks since I last imbibed and the symptoms that are of most note are insomnia and elevated pulse rate. I am taking blood pressure medication (family history of hypertension and unrelated to pot use) and my BP is well controlled but my pulse rate seems to be ten to twenty beats higher than normal which I attribute to an overall low level of anxiousness that I have to tolerate while my body gets the natural endocannabinoid system back to normal. I have seen no mention of increased heart rate during withdrawal in any of the medical articles I have read and few mentions in personal anecdotes. I have cut back on caffeine consumption and limit my intake to before noon. In the afternoon I drink a calming herbal tea and make an effort to stay well hydrated throughout the day. I have been losing weight too (eating natural foods and exercising - all good things) so I suspect there is still some THC in my body fat that is slowing the reactivation of my natural cannabinoids. Every now and then I get the urge to 'fire one up' but that is almost entirely a psychological habit and not to address physiological symptoms. I have seen timelines suggesting some low-level symptoms can still be felt anywhere from six months to a year after quitting. The endocannabinoid system and how it works is a fairly recent discovery (mid '90s) but I now have a better idea of why I feel like I do and how long I can realistically expect feel symptoms. That knowledge is making the ending of a bad habit a lot easier.
Chronic pot use isn't fun for me anymore and wasting time doing it was just a stupid habit.
