I'VE HAD MY MIRENA FOR ALMOST TWO MONTHS NOW AND I LOVE IT. THOUGH I HAVE BEEN SPOTTING FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS NOW BUT ITS SO LIGHT THAT IT DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER ME. I CRAMP A LITTLE EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS OR SO BUT MY OBGYN SAID ITS NORMAL. WHEN SHE PUT IT IN SHE GAVE ME A RX FOR PAIN. SHE SAID I WOULD CRAMP FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF MONTHS. BUT OTHER THAN THAT I HAVE NO OTHER PROBLEMS. ALL WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT - WOMEN THINK THAT MIRENA IS HORRIBLE BECAUSE THEY SEE ALL THE WOMEN THAT ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS AND HOW MISSERABLE IT MAKES YOU BUT THERE IS A BIGGER PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN THAT DON'T EVEN HAVE SIDE EFFECTS. BUT YOU DONT HEAR ABOUT THEM. I WOULD RECOMMEND MIRENA TO ANYONE!!!!!
i have had mirena in for 4 months now and love it. i spot for maybe 3 days month. the only thing i have a problem with is my hubby says it hurts him when we have sex. has anyone else had this prob. he says it feels like a needle poking him. my obgyn says that it is correctly placed.
My husband has the same complaint. I've had my Mirena IUD in for almost 3 years now. My strings are cut extremely short ( so short that my Dr. could not locate during an exam) and its in place correctly so no idea how he feels it.
I have noticed that my skin is breaking out lately but I attributed it to my lowly water intake. Now I'm thinking it could indeed be the Mirena.

I have had my mirena for 7 months know an I experience the worst headaches and cant lose any weight at all. Im wondering if I should get it taken out or keep it in just because i dont have a period. o.O
I to am having weight gain and cannot lose. I am having my mirena taken out. Please someone out there who has had this experience and then taken it out- were you successful with your weight loss after it was removed?
Oh, this is just GREAT....o.O
I had my Mirena placed two days ago, after going over ALL possible side-effects with a fine-toothed comb with the doctor. I knew I probably should have done some research online regarding people's personal experiences with the thing before I had it placed, but I was unfortunately sold on "more effective than tubal ligation", "shorter, less painful periods", and of course, "NO WEIGHT GAIN". The only thing I can think of WORSE than weight gain, is weight gain, acne, AND going bald.
I spent more than half my life significantly overweight (220+), and did NOT have an easy time losing and keeping off that 100 lbs. Additionally, I make most of my living doing pinup modeling. Needless to say, the stories I'm reading here have me more than a little worried, and I'm REALLY hoping these are exceptions and not the rule. :-(

I've got to tell you. I was on the Depo for 6 yrs. I just switched to the Mirena last Tuesday. It was the most painful feeling I have ever felt. I started to clam up, I couldn't move, couldn't stand and almost past out the pain was so bad. I love the idea of the Mirena and trying to hang in there. I want to know if some of the pain will go away. I'm still having some pain when I walk and have to use the bathroom quite frequently. If I don't, it starts to hurt. I went into the Emergency last Wednesday, the day after I had it inserted. They did several different tests. The ultrasound they did showed that it wasn't pushed in far enough and this is why I was probably having the pain. They say my body may push it into place. What do you all think? I'm new to this. I love the idea of it, but I'm in pain all the time. This is not over reacting. This is unfortunatley the truth.
I had my Mirena IUD removed just yesterday. I had it placed October 15, so it came out not even 3 months after getting it. My boyfriend and I took quite a while to decide to get an IUD because we had an eptopic preganancy in March and we were very worried about the increased risk, but the Gyno assured us it would not be a problem.
I was fine for like 3 days after getting it. I had a little pain during and following the insertion but nothing too terrible. Three days later I had incredible abdominal pain. This lasted for a week at the same time I started bleeding. I called the Gyno about the pain because it was more extreme than any other period pain I had ever felt. I was told that it was normal.
At my 6 week check that doctor (I go to one of those practices with like 6 docs) told me if I had pain like that again to immediately call because that was NOT normal.
So over the course of the next 2 months, this occurs 4 or 5 more times. I called everytime and I was told that it was normal. I was litterally doubled over in pain taking a handful of motrin or advil to kill the pain. But still got...this is all normal. Mind you this whole time I've been bleeding everyday at this point from light to heavy, but every single day. I even at one point expelled a piece of tissue link 2 inches long. I called because I was totally freaked out and hadn't heard about this as a side effect. Again, Normal.
Finally this past Sunday, I woke up to incredible pain. I tried to manage it with advil and got myself back to sleep. My noon I downed another handful of advil. I was on the couch or in bed all day, when I had to walk i was hunched over like a little old lady. I started with a fever, etc. When it didn't go away by 7 pm I called the doctor's office. I hestitated because I knew what they'd say. Normal!!!
So I called, the doctor said it was normal. Told me I probably had this stomach bug that was going around. I insisted something was wrong that this was worse than before. i told her I didn't know if it had to do with the IUD or not, but that I was really worried with the prior eptopic and since the pain was not going away this time, and with a having a fever too. She didn't really think so, said I could be evelatuated the next morning at the office or if I really was concerned I could come to the ER. I told her we'd go to the ER.
We went to the ER to come to find out I have this massive infection and the IUD needed to come out. It was in the right place and everything looked ok on the ultrasound, but somehow I had gotten an infection.
We are completely monogomous, we live together and share our home with my 5 year son who's autistic. Neither of us have time for anything else....so I definitely wasn't "exposed" to anything. I come to find out that because I've been bleeding everyday I was more susupectible to bacteria getting past my cervix since your cervix is open during menstration.
So they started me on antibiotics (with a shot) while at the hospital and two seperate antibiotics at home for 10 days. I'm also on Vicodin for the pain which I can still feel with it, but it does take the edge off. I saw my Gyno (this time I got an appointment with the head of the practice) yesterday and had the IUD removed. She said if I'm not better by Friday that she's putting me in the hospital for IV antibiotics. Honestly, some of the pain went away as soon as she took the IUD out, but most of the pain is still there.
I'm really scared now becasue fertility was already a concern for us with a conidition I have and the prior eptopic. PID can cause infertility if not treated promptly. I'm worry now that the infection could have started months ago and just now got this bad.
I'm totally happy to have that thing out of my body. I never felt 100% about it, so my advice is to go with your gut if you have any reservations don't get it. Also, if you do any you have anything happen that you don't feel is normal don't just say "ok" and take the doc's word for it.
Hope this helps anyone who reads it!!!!!

I had my mirena put in more than a year ago. After my pregnancy, my doctor was talking to me about birth control and how I should consider it. So i did! She talked to me specifically about MIRENA and how it works great, no weight gain, and no SERIOUS side effects. YEAH RIGHT. I have had it in for more than a year and I WANT IT OUT. Since reading many of these blogs, I have noticed that many people are complaining about the symptoms that i have been experience. The constant cramping, the pain during sex, acne and the horrible hair loss. I had acne when i was a teen and then I started using Proactiv. It works wonderfully with my skin. When I got pregnant, I didnt even need to use the proactiv as my skin was just naturally clear. I didnt have to use any kind of treatment, my acne was gone. When i had the IUD put in, my acne came back and proactiv no longer worked for me:(. I have gained weight, and it is very hard to lose. I have been an athlete all my life and training helps me lose weight rapidly. For some reason, it is hard for me to lose weight.
MIRENA IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. NOW ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS HOW MUCH HAIR IS GONE AND HOW MUCH WEIGHT AND ACNE I GOT. NOT WORTH THE RISK!!!!!
im 20 and had Mirena put in for a form of birth control.. i am in a steady relationship and have had NO problems with it.
There is uncomfortable pain when it is put in.. but nothing unbearable. You have cramps for about 36 hours on and off then you feel nothing. iT was nothing for me.. no big deal.
I have had no hair loss.. cramps.. bleeding or acne.. but everyone is different..
It is wonderful not having a period and not having to take a pill every day :]
I highly reccommed it.
My sister also has it and has NO problems with it.

I have had mirena for 3 months and have had no periods no side effects except pain during sex and its not because of the strings. i was wondering if its because of the mirena of if they damaged something putting it in because it only hurts sometimes during sex and its like a cramping and it feels the same as when they put it in, the thing that they use to hold the cervix while they're putting it in. Its only on one side and that's the side they held it on.
I have had my 2nd IUD for almost a year now. The first IUD was GREAT for all 5 years. I assumed the second would be as well. WRONG! I have severe acne around my jaw line and chin. I am 30 and have never had breakouts, even as a teenager. This is freaking me out. I have looked into every option as to why I am breaking out. The only answer is Merena. My skin looks horrible!!!!! I have also noticed hair growing where it shouldnt for a woman. How can the same product have such a diverse effect the second time around. I am about to say hello to the pill again.
I got the mirena IUD inserted in aug. 06. For approx. 6 months (give or take some) I had mild to moderate bleeding on and off. (Some was from giving birth to my third child, i'm sure.)
Anyway, after the first 6-9 months all was great. I've read some have gained weight with this? I guess its different for every woman, b/c between Sept. 06-Aug. 07 I lost around 60 lbs. (from 200 lbs. to 140). The only change I made was I decreased my calorie intake per day slightly.
As far as periods go, I haven't had one in about a year. No bleeding, no cramping, no pms, no signs what so ever. So, for me, the mirena has been a total blessing! Plus, its done its job! My husband and I are most likely finished having children, after 3, and I was not interested in something as permanent as getting tubes tied. (my obgyn discouraged this since I was 25 at the time).
So, if you meet the suggested criteria that mirena states for getting the iud, I would recommend it to anyone. I have tried other methods of birth control and this is the easiest and best for me. I think its one of those things that u have to give a little time to really see all its benefits and get completely used to it. Ofcourse there is always a few people who will have problems or not benefit from it, but that is true with any drug.

Hi, I got the mirena in Sept. 2008. The worst mistake I could have made. My systems are bloating, hands and legs/ankles swell, gained 30 pounds, no monthly cycle (although I do like that) and now since I got some blood work done I have low thyroid levels. No matter how much I exercise and watch my diet I cannot lose weight. So April 1,2009 I will have my mirena taken out and I cannot wait. I am miserable.
Hi all
I have just had the mirena coil taken out after 5 years and I feel fantastic. Yes it was great not having a bleed every month, but I know now I have not been myself for ages, I was putting everything health wise down to my age thinking I must be menopausal. But within two hours of it been taken out I felt great as if something had lifted from my head. Please way up your options if you need the treatment as I did for heavy periods. They maybe another way.
