I am 27 years old and have just been diagnosed with a neuroma. The pain started very suddenly about 2 months ago, slowly worsened over about 2 weeks, and then one night got so bad that I was paralyzed and in tears for about 2 hours. I went to the Dr. the very next morning and they diagnosed me and gave me a cortisone shot and a pad insert for my shoe. Has not really gotten any better. I am not able to wear heels at all. Even my tennis shoes cause pain after wearing them for more than an hour. When I am at home without shoes on I have no pain, but then I wear shoes for an hour and I am in pain. Most of the time the pain is very uncomfortable, but still bearable, although I have had several "episodes" where I have almost fainted because of the extreme pain. I am reluctant to do any kind of activity and have already started putting on weight. Needless to say, I'm already extremely frustrated and feel like I am too young to live like this.

I am seriously considering surgery but am worried about making my problem worse than it already is. Would appreciate anyone's suggestions about going forward with surgery or other treatments to consider.

Main question for those who have had surgery--was it worth it??

Hi Frustrated-
I have been dealing with morton's neuroma in left foot for over 5 years (pain was manageable with orthotics and I was actually able to run) but last year developed a neuroma in right foot as well. For past year have been in lots of pain in both feet, can only wear sneakers with orthotics and can't walk for more than 15 minutes with these.
I have finally scheduled surgery to remove the nerve in both feet. Unfortunately have to wait a month for surgery as have some travel coming up but will keep you posted ! I am also only 30 and tried the cortizone shots and everything else. I am really pinning all hopes on this surgery so will definitely post how it goes.

Did you finally heal. I had the surgery in August and developed a small hole in the incision that continued to drain a clear fluid. They did the surgery again in December and the whole incession came apart leaving a 1" by about 1 1/2 inch whole in my foot. It is now three months since the last surgery and the whole if finally beginning to close but I am developing more and more pain in the left side ball of my foot. Anybody else undergoing or had a similar experience?

I had a Morton's Neuroma removed just last Thursday 19th March. The incision was on the top of my foot just above the 2nd interdigital space between my toes. The surgeon cut out the neuroma and I had some stitches and thick dressing on for 4 days. I kept the foot elevated and have experienced very little pain. I have taken ibuprofen as instructed but have barely needed the co-codamol. Yesterday I saw the wound for the first time and it looks healthy. I now have a small dressing over it. The stitches are due to come out in a week (10 days after surgery) So far so good interms of recovery...I found I could put some weight on my heel and outside of my foot today and just about walk, but I am still going to keep it elevated for the most part and take care. The ball of my foot is quite tender and the skin is a bit bruised and swollen.

So far I would recommend the surgery....I researched the steroid injection route and found little evidence of success. The clicking sound you hear will be the neuroma...believe me, because mine did that prior to surgery. It may even be getting bigger as it has more room!

It's not all doom and gloom with the surgery as many of the posts suggest and I have also spoken to other people who experienced successful excision. I hope you will be one of the lucky ones and I'm hoping my recovery will continue to be good. XD

%-) Well, it's been 4 weeks since I had a Morton's Neuroma removed and sadly I have bad news...

All was going fairly well up to 3 weeks post-op and I had begun to put some weight on the heel and side of my foot and gone down to one crutch.

However, I had always felt that one of the gaps between the sutures was rather large and had allowed the incision to open up a bit. I was told not to worry. Unfortunately this area has become the site of a rather painful infection. I have been given a course of antibiotics (Flucloxicillin) and have a swollen, red, hot foot and sausage toes!!

Today, I bathed the wound with salt water as it had become quite "gunky" and the wound sort of 'burst'...with yellow pus and blood seeping out. Ugh!!

I now have a hole in my foot, where a plug of hardened blood and all the pus came out and the incision looks like it needs stitches all over again! I don't know if that's what the surgeon would do, though. I will have to wait and see, until after the infection has gone.

All very frustrating and annoying and extremely PAINFUL! It will be 5 weeks in total I have had off work, so far and I may need more.

Hey ho...the saga continues.... :-(

Just had surgery on my left foot for a neuromaI have had for years. I had gone through hundreds of dollars in orthodics including some custom...not cheap! I also had had numerous cortisone injections as well as the attempt to "kill" the nerve w/ alcohol injections, nothing worked. As an avid exercixer and spin instructor, it finall got to the point where I could not run without ecxruciating pain, spinning cause my foot to hurt and then go all tingly, numb in a hurtful way. that was it, I needed to succumb to the surgery...both feet, one at a time.
I am laying here with my left foot propped up and in no pain only 24 hrs. post-surgery. Yesterday it hurt as my foor "woke up", but I have taken nothing for pain today as there is none!
we'll see what happens in the next few weeks. I am feeling optimistic :-D, although reading the posts was a little scary! Any positive results out there?

I had two Morton's neuroma's removed from between the third and fourth toe of my left foot 4 weeks ago. One was normal size and the other was rather large with several branches extending in my foot. I have rheumatoid arthritis and the Dr. did notice alot of arthritis and inflamation in my foot, My foot is still swollen and painful. Forget walking barefoot. It feels like I have a golf ball under my foot. I am better with shoes but still using cane even crutches at times. I am very active and this is really worrying me. I thought by now I would be back to normal or almost. Anyone have this type of feelings post op?

I just read through that article you posted on your website above and I was expecting to see my face at the bottom of the article. I am a 26 year old former athlete who has at least 3 neuroma's between the 2 feet, bad knees, have had bilateral compartment release due to compartment syndrome, TMJ, arthritis in my back... etc. I am a kindergarten teacher and the severe pain that shoots through my feet makes me fall over. I have been contemplating the surgery and just had custom orthodics made for my feet. Seeing the stories and horror stories posted on here I am worried about what to do. Is it really as easy as a foot patch? Is this something I can mention to my doctor? Any help would be great! Thank you!

I toe next to the last has been burninig for almost 3 yrs now. I finally went to doctor and all they want to do is give me a shot that is suppose to help with the imflammation and it numbs it a bit, but it doesn't help at all and i don't want to keep getting this painful shot. My one foot hurts more when i wear tennis shoes than it does if i wear a flat. My foot hurts and it is very annoying but i'm not in horrible pain yet, i would like to just go ahead and have the surgery but im scared i might regret it.
