to all who have unanswered questions about hydrocephalus ? At the age of 16 , I had delivered my first son was a normal pregnancy, till the 8th. Month.. That's when I was told, my child was hydrocephalic an would need surgery ASAP after birth.. He was born via c-section unplanned on 7/4/1988 my little firecracker! Full term, he looked so perfect in every way.. Very scared an uneducated ... I had to make sure I gave him the best possible chance at a normal life, he had his 1st. Shunt placed at a week old, started having uncontrollable seizures at 10 months of age, we were told he would not survive on a number of occasions , I refused too give up! Or believe anyone could put a death date on him.. He has had 14 operations over the years, is on the highest doses of seizure meds. Possible! Has suffered a stroke that took his life at 24.. They brought him bk. From the darkest time of our lives.. Had too learn everything all over again, He's 28 years old now! Even In middle school? He had a serious seizure/clogged shunt that he needed to be rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, having c/p on top of being blind and trying to get his education, 15 hours later he was on stage playing his trumpet! He refused to miss the concert , he was the opening act .. Proud mama to watch her baby conquer his disabilities an continue fighting for his life! A real go getter! He went on and Graduated distinguished honors top of his class #3, in high school even worked for his school while attending classes. He went on to collage! Again graduated distinguished and worked there as well, he majored in computers.. Never let anything stop him! He's a very positive person he does not consider himself handicap ! Rather? He considers himself handi-capable ! Yes we have our bad days , Sadly.. His seizures take a lot out of him! Yet.. He shows no fears... never feels sorry for himself.. An never questions why him? He works when he can find a job till the seizures keeps him down weeks at a time, an it costs him his jobs.. Still? Doesn't stop him! He always finds another! Yes as the years go by? He is starting too show signs of exhaustion, confusion , memory loss , all signs we go through with aging, does not mean it necessarily has to do with having a shunt! At the moment? He is having some difficulties as his seizures have become a bit more progressed lately , and it does seem to happen every few years, we do get them controlled then we lose the control and it's time for medication adjustment.. I guess what I'm trying to do ? is give hope... to those who are uncertain of their child's future? Never give up! Every person is different with any disability or no disabilities! we are all here for an uncertain amount of time? all we can do? Is be grateful for every day we wake! Cherish the moments with our loved ones ! What's here today? Can be gone tomorrow! Live, love, learn all you can while we are here... Remember.. Your glass is always half full, because there's a hole in the bottom... It's up to how you do your best too remain positive an keep it half full... There's a reason we have to go through these lessons an what we learn from them... Take nothing for granted! Specially TIME!
