hi the very same thing has happened to me, am i fed up, i am 5 weeks out of surgery now and should be doing great apart from this below the knee dead leg and foot. i went to see a nurologist that i chose, he said it was from when they rotated the leg after surgery, a bit like when women have babies and have their legs in stirrups. i have to go for a test to see if the nerve is still alive, he also ordered a brace so my toes would not trip me up. i cried and cried as i had waited so long also to get the hip done and then this happened. i am checking on everything to see what i can do. i am glad to hear about your mum not what has happened but that i am not alone. something should be done about this happening to people. u just swap one problem for another. cheers jill. p.s. i am a young 63, i was so active before this happened and plan to be again. thanks for caring about your mum.

My surgery was in 2010 had to have the rod put in my entire spine. Left me with numbness in the right leg. The left leg ended up with foot drop, I wore the AFO for about a year, Went to therapy for 6 mo. had home health rehab. for 8 weeks. Now it has been almost 2 years and one doctor told me there is really nothing out there for it. You will just have to live with it. My life has changed from 100% to 30%, I am very limited. I prayed for years they would be something to help, but I have got very disappointed in the health care system we have. I did purchase a Bioness stimulator, it will transmit sensations on the back of your leg where the nerve is damaged. This will help some to raise your toes to help clear the floor to not drap your foot when you try and walk. Check it out it may help some Bioness.com. By the way one doctor said if you have the nerve repaired once you find out you have foot drop. It has to be done if I am not mistaken within the year. Then it is not a for sure that will really fix it and you may develop complications from this surgery. I hate to sound discouraging, but from what all I have read and heard other patients say " we are like animals being experimented with"...
Good luck and I will keep all of us in my prayers and maybe someday they will be some relief for all of us. Take care.

I have had two knees and 2 hips replaced. 2 are just fine and no problems ever...the second knew was slightly misaligned and I have trouble raising it to wash my foot but other wise it is ok. I had the 2nd hip done about 2 ½ years ago at a top teaching hospital and still continue to have problems with severe burning pain. I am upright and walking at the pool almost every day and I do believe that it has helped. Now I am looking to get rid of my burning pain in my hip. After reading all of the stories above I guess I am lucky to do so well. I know one thing and that is the next time I have surgery at a teaching hospital that they will have to carry me in. I have been experimented with and I am not happy about it. Surgery is bad enough with out being a teaching lesson for some one. I choose my doctor carefully and it ending up that he just observed the surgery.

I read this thinking I was reading my own personal story. After a total hip replacement my doctor came in to tell me that he was watching my prosthetic because it wasn't "settling" right. He dismissed me the next day. One week exactly to the day of my surgery it spontaneously dislocated. I was rushed back to the hospital by ambulance and underwent relocation surgery with fixation screws. Over the next 5 years I had to undergo several more surgical procedures due to recall of the prosthetic, post-operative infection 68% MRSA, debridement of infected tissue with wound vac placement.. PICC line placement. Finally after all of this total removal of the prosthetic altogether. I was totally without a hip for 13 months. I now have foot drop with little to no feeling from my knee down. I have very little to no movement of my toes which now roll under if I try to put on shoes. I also sought legal help only to be told that there was nothing in my records to prove that this doctor was negligent & that pre-operative release papers indicate that nerve damage is possible. I wish I had never had the replacement done. I think I could live with the hip pain much better than barely walking at all now. Something that was supposed to correct a problem and was told if done would enhance my life hasn't . Yes.. I am fortunate to be alive.. I am fortunate to be able to walk at all from what I'm told. My advice is to NOT have any replacement done unless you absolutely can no longer deal with the pain. Seek out several opinions and do background searches on doctors before you agree to go through with the replacement when and if the time comes. I truly believe that God never places more on you than you can handle.. it's true.. what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.. but it doesn't take away the question of why?

I realize this post is over a year old, but I thought I would try anyway, hopefully the person who wrote it is still posting. I am also disabled in many ways from nerve damage. It occurred during a back surgery that was suppose to be simple with a rare concern for any risk....well all who read this can laugh..lol I am quoting what the surgeon said to me right before I went into surgery. When I came out, over the next few weeks I started losing feeling in both legs, numbness in all areas, but the huge problem that occurred instantly when I awoke was I could not move my left foot. I would like to talk to the person who wrote this post, it would be great to hear how your doctor was able to fix your drop foot and how well you are doing recovering from such a difficult experience. If you are still active on this site and you would like to talk, please send me a message. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

I have had hip replacements on both hips, and one hip had a "redo." The last surgery was 7 years ago. Since then it has gotten increasingly harder for me to walk, especially on the most affected leg. Thanks to an occupational therapist, I am regaining strength and balance with exercises that target the core. Too, she is teaching me how to walk correctly again. Lately, I have discovered tai chi and have seen extremely encouraging results: I am getting my blood circulating again, my balance is much better, and my wakening legs are getting more agile and light. I love tai chi! It is gentle and effective! Never give up! Tai chi is, also, a social activity and can provide a supportive network of people who are, just like us, in need of help.:-P

I to went through 3 hip revisions within an 8 month period. I can hardly put any pressure on the leg and am in constant pain. Cannot walk for any long period of time or stand. Dr. does not know what is wrong with me. I am flying to the Cleveland Clinic to seek help and treatment.

I am 49 years old and had my right hip replaced 7 years ago and the left one done just 9 weeks ago, the first surgery was great and I had no problems at all but this 2nd hip replacement on the left hip was not so good, my left leg is almost an inch longer than the right now and i have to wear shoe lifts which are a pain, but I have terrible pain in my feet and fingers? I thought it was just arthritis forming but it seemed to happen suddenly right after surgery, it is in both feet so now Dr seems to think it is Rheumatoid arthritis, I already have osteoarthritis in both hips and now forming in shoulders, I am not sure what to tell you but you may need to be checked for rheumatoid arthritis I have heard that some people have pain after surgery but it is in other joints suddenly, I hope you can get some answers

I hope your attorney is able to get you something. However, I have been told by at least 5 attorneys that possible nerve damage is part of the surgical release that "every" hip replacement patient is made aware of prior to surgery and that the hospital has this written up in the release forms prior to your surgery for you to sign. My life has changed drastically. I can no longer work a full time job, I cannot walk any distance because I have foot drop with little to no feeling my foot and ankle. I was told by my doctor after the fact " hips are not my speciality, knees are" He tells me this after the fact!! This doctor didn't document the numerous times I came in post operatively telling him that I was still in pain and that things didn't feel right. So he set himself up for me not to have a case against him. I wish you the best at being able to make a case for yourself..
