I am sure these complications are more common than we are told. Surgeons are in the business to make money, as are doctors and medical device manufacturers (not overseen by the FDA as they are devices like car parts), and I know that after 2 surgeries, I am worse than ever. Five years into one of them and I have the worst nerve pain on that entire side of my body, from jaw to foot. I do not want nor cannot afford another surgery at this time and physical therapy (also a big money-maker) hasn't helped, so I don't know what to do. I am already on more medications than I want to be and I cannot tolerate opiods even at tiny doses. I hate tramadol. I just want the pain to be gone. No more surgeries, no more meds. Anyone have any ideas? I am sick of living this way.

I can totally sympathize and empathize with you. I know longer have the life I was assured Id have following a revolving door in and out of the hospital following a failed hip surgery. From dislocation of my hip prostetic, recall from the manufacturer of the implant, another replacement, then post-operative infection, placement of wound vac, six surgeries and the total removal of my prostetic. I had to see a infectious disease specialitist for the hospital acquired infection. It remained in my body and after six months of no inprovement, I went to another doctor on the advice of a home care nurse. This new doctor reviewed my records and within 10 minutes he was able to determine that I had become resistent to the antibiotic infusion that I had been being given twice a day by a pic line. Something I dealt with for a year was resolved with six weeks of infusions with two new antibiotics combined. This surgery resulted in my damaged sciatic and perineal nerves and the cherry on the top, dropfoot with deformity. My surgeon then sent me ftom the hospital to a rehabilitation facility. Prior to tye implant removal, not once did he inform me that this would be done following my implant removal. I spent five weeks there. Seeing my family one a week when they could get there to ser me. All the trauma to my body from multiple surgeries pushed me into full blown fibromyalgia. I deal with this extreme nerve and extreme body imflammation every day of my life. My orthopedist then dismissed me with the statement, "my speciality is actually knees and I think you need to see someone with more experience in hip related problems. Giving me the names of John Hopkins Orthopedic Department, which is an elective hospital which takes patients on a case by case senerio and then another doctor who told me that I needed to return to my previous orthopedist and demand that he correct what he had botched up. I went onto overdrive searching for a documented and well publiscised orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip reconstruction. After two months, I found one over an hour from my home. This doctor was a God send. I explained to him my former orthopedist had said said the difficulties of doing another hip implant on a scale of 1 to 10 was a 10. I asked in his opinion using the same scale, how did he access reimplantation. He looked at my x-rays and pointed out to me areas that might prepose a problem and met my eyes and said the difficulty of this is about a 4 at the most, if that. Because of this surgeons schedule, I had to wait another two and a half months for my hip to be replaced. It was accomplished and after a week I was released to then have rehabilative physical therapy. Like you, because of the nerve damage it was a waste of time and precious energy. Nerve conduction studies proved that my nerve damage was irreparable. Gone are my days of being able walk any lengthy distance or time, or climb stairs without hand railings on on sides. I now have tried nerve block injections for the nerve pain which I received little to no relief. Ive excepted that the state of my life is what it is. Ive given my life over to being strengthened by the Grace of a living and faithful God. Yes, hes allowed this to occur in my life, and I question it, but I trust him to use me according to His will and purpose. God bless and strengthen you. I hope it helps to know there are others out there dealing with the same things you are.

Hey... I really feel for you...Had to have Hip replaced for "Quality of Life" Had left lung removed due to Lung cancer...and had the hip surgery under epidural ... I had left hip replacement in 2012.... and woke with Femoral nerve damage... told me I was the 1%..that went down like a "lead Balloon" ...from ankle to top of thigh no feeling bar nerve pain..and as most of you know...that is the worst...was on full leg brace and walker for almost 2 years...kept on saying to the Ortho surgeon..something is wrong I have pain in the hip region...but he dismissed it.. and like some...thought i was being a Hypocondriac...still had the nerve pain from top of thigh to ankle and really hurt to touch as most know ..also had 3 nerve test studies done as well... :( ..2016 now up till 6 mths ago ..I saw an add on tele regarding stem cell / platelet regeneration they were doing a trial..so I called and ended up seeing a Dr about an hour and half away from where I live... I have had 6 sessions so far....1 per week with 2 vials of "platelets" put into the hip area where pain is...but the last 2 were unreal...they were a month apart... 4 vials were used for these last 2 the platelets were injected as close to the femoral nerve as possible and from then within 4 hours I could literally scratch the top of my thigh !! which I couldn't do before due to the pain.... I am going back in a couple weeks..as we have just moved house...(renting)
Also I am feeling the pain in my hop More now..and I feel it may be from the leg starting to get some feeling back... that's my story so far....sorry so long.... like a lot of you..don't want to live on pain med's for rest of my life... check and see if any trials are happening in your neck of the woods...
I still walk with a limp..and breathing is hard...but hell, I'm here..Hugs all and Best Of Luck xo

If your hip replacement was recently done, get an attorney NOW before the statute of limitations is up on being able to file malpractice against your doctor! A damaged nerve MIGHT get better but doesnt totally go away. I was never told the possibility of permanent nerve damage. Mine is permanent and I have leg length descrepency along with it. Stairs are a nightmare for me even after 6 years post op. If I had known the outcome of this replacement, I would have opted to live with the pain. Atleast I could do everyday normal things that I now cant, such as walk any distance without my legs feeling like they weigh 500 lbs each. All I now say to people who ask about hip replacement(s) is don't do it unless you're in total agony, cause once your hip is gone there's no getting it back and your life isnt the same again.

If suing would help my leg I would !!!

Might not do any good as far as your hip is concern, but it Would help you be able to relocate yourself where you can remain on one level in your home and have access to a bathroom easier. Think about that as an incentive.

Suing drs is a hard thing to do,like I said of it would help my pain hell I would sue !! Could not put a price on this pain it surely has screw up my life. At 63 retired I had projects & plans that now are about impossible, not knowing when I'll be able to stand or walk to do anything !!!
Can't even ride my lawn mower to cut my 3acre yard & just that pisses me off. Not in a wheelchair but I'm incapacitated whether I like it or not !!!!

Hey guys .Reading about all your suffering post op I had my hip replaced 6weeks ago and logged on to see about nerve damage as the site of op.left hip . Feels wierd /semi dead .Early days so trying to keep up all the exercises and walking .
This may help you ....Nettle tea /and or ...cider vinegar .Not together .
Nettle tea .3x@day .Google the benefits which you will feel in 2or 3weeks...The toxins in the muscles which are problematic are drawn out..Pain is reduced dramatically . .Not very good explanation .Just a simple explanation ..
The cyder vinager take with honey in water for similar benefits
Check with a doctor who is wise and likes to use healthy options before use of course because it would be not suitable if you have some other health problems which I can't know .
Finally say a little prayer .Ask for help from the Divine physicianJesus..Praying for you for health and happiness.
YV .aged 64
