Not taking my birth control properly.

i got my period at the end of november but havent been taking my birth control properly. i started taking it again 2 weeks after i got off my period. my boyfriend and i are having sex but always protected. i still havent got my period but ive got something its like a light brown is that a sign that im getting my period because im almost done with my pills or what??
