I also have this problem, I also find it helps to hang my arm over the side if the bed. Last night I got a bag of frozen vegetables and put it on my hand. Within a few minutes it felt better. This is very frustrating.

I'm reading this thread not for me but because my 23 year old niece has the hands on fire problem.  She also can't sleep at night. We have been thinking it has to do with the discs in her neck.  She's a student and has no insurance so hasn't been to a doctor.  Do any of you have a problem with the hands swelling up 2 or 3 times their normal size?  I think I will buy the book one of the posts mentioned THE TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORKBOOK for her and see if it helps.  Let me tell you personally that if any of you have carpal tunnel, it hurts bad and can cause your whole arm to hurt and wake you up at night. Go have the surgery it is a piece of cake and such a relief.  I had my right wrist done years ago when it was a more evasive surgery, but had my left wrist done 5 years ago and it really was easy.  Trust me you'll feel so much better after the surgery and wonder why you didn't have it done earlier.  I know in Illinois you can claim workmens comp if it work related, a lot of my coworkers did this. Really don't hesitate to have the carpal tunnel surgery, you will be so much happier, and won't it be nice to get a good nights sleep!

Wow! I thought I was the only one that had this until about a week ago!
I thought I was losing my mind, or at least going to from being woken up by the pain!
Last week I was talking to an aunt, and she said it's tied to her arthritis, and since that runs in the family, I just assumed that's what was starting for me. I want to try natural remedies first, so if anyone had relief from anything other than massage ( I'll need to get the book mentioned!) please post a reply here!

Wow you guys get it! Last night I awoke crying from a dream that I had pieces of metal being pulled through my fingers in my right hand. The arm was so sore, hand was numb and the fingers and  tips were like flaming sausages with no skin on them they were so tender to touch. "Yes especially the first knuckle at the tip. I am 46 and love to garden. I'm an Rn recovering gradually from fibromyalgia over the last year and see my Chiropractor regularly as well as a fitness trainer.
They both told me that my pain was associated with the  plexus of nerves in the shoulder. The answer is to stretch the muscles in the shoulder and neck and upper back area.
The work I do has tightened certain muscles and they pinch the nerves when I lay with my arm bent against my body as these positions contract the already tense muscles. I also feel the symptoms coming on while driving or talking on the phone.

To stand at the doorway with my arm on the jam at 45 degrees and step through the door gives a good stretch. I can also get relief after a while by laying on back or stomach and stretching these muscles by forcing my shoulders back, however I need to do an intense stretch.and reach with my arm as far as possible and hold up to 30 sec.

Also someone mentioned
B6?  This helped me to totally irradiate Carpel tunnel a few years back and avoid the recommended surgery! In 6 months it was gone with stretching and B6 alone! Somehow it supports the nerves.

I believe massage is a great idea if you are so blessed to have aid. Also the Trigger point Therapy you do yourself will give relief if muscle knotting is the issue. A tennis ball in a sock, placed between you and the wall until you find that tender spot and then gently rolled over the area can help.

I'll be thinking of you all tonight!

Have had frequent tingling and numbness in left hand for a few weeks.  I’m a landscape designer and work at a garden center; thought I’d developed carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive motion and lifting heavy pots, etc.  Woke yesterday morning to a tingling, completely numb left hand that felt like it was on fire.  Very painful and frightening.  Spoke w/a friend who said she had the same condition some time ago, and her Dr. recommended surgery for carpal tunnel.  Instead, she consulted a chiropractor who said it was actually tendonitis of the elbow, and this is what he recommended: take 2 - 4 fingers of the hand opposite the numb hand and place on the top of the forearm of the afflicted hand, and place the thumb on the bottom of the forearm, sort of cupping the forearm.  Massage the forearm up and down from elbow to hand for 1 to 2 minutes, 3 times per day, using an oil or lotion to facilitate the massage.  My friend healed completely without the surgery or even splinting.

I started the massage immediately with olive oil, then changed to Penetrex to optimize my efforts (not an endorsement, and I have no investment in it whatsoever; it’s the best joint/tendon/ligament pain ointment I’ve discovered after years of much trial and error, and if it helps someone else, great).  Tiger balm may also work well.  While I’ve only been massaging my left forearm for just over 24 hours, I already feel a dramatic difference, and I couldn’t be more surprised.  It will certainly not be the answer for everyone, but thought I’d post this non-invasive method in case it might bring relief to someone and possibly prevent splinting or surgery.  Good luck to everyone struggling with this!

i am so glad that i found this sight i have been looking for what this is. i still dont know but at least i know im not alone with this problem. I am a landscaper and i am always using my hands to build walls and paver patios and walkways or just carrying heavy things. i am going to get this book and let everyone know how it worked. nobody can truly understand this pain unless they go thru it.  i wake up everynight and walk around for a while and run my hands under water, or massage my forarms or anything else i can do to make the pain stop.  i will get back to you all with the outcome of how it works. I want to thank you all for taking the time and writing these posts to help each other that means a great deal goodluck to you all and hopefully we can all get some well needed and deserved sleep. Bye for now

Ok. I have had the same problem for years now and it is do to over use and was diagnosed with cts. All the trigger spots and home remedies help a lot but if you are like me and cannot afford the dr visits, I have a great solution for everyone. As we all know this mostly happens at night... I have found sleeping with supported wrist brace on helps tremendously. I purchased mine at a walgreens pharmacy. 15.00-25.00 is the normal price range and let me tell you it works. What most of us do is bend the wrist the wrong way at night and cut off blood flow to the hands and fingers do to inflamed tendons that run through your wrist into the palm of your hand. This inflammation causes swelling which constructs the blood flow to the digits and hand. This brace has an angled support so you cannot bend your wrist and allows blood flow to the hand. I hope this helps somebody.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

whoops! my whole message didn't come through...take 2

I've also been having pain in my arms and hands at night. I've noticed it in the last few months. My dad said he had the same thing so he used to wear a wrist guard for Carpol tunnel at night and it seemed to help. Before I had this pain in arms and hands while I slept, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalsia. I even take medicince for imflammation and tried cortizone injections in shoulder for sharp pains. So the pain in my body, I thought, was that but then the numbness, tingling, and "dead arms" seemed to happen all the time. Even when I try to hold a book to read, my fingers will go numb. Therefore, after reading all of these posts, I think I have carpol tunnel, Brachial Plexus, or nerve damage (maybe from rutured disc in L4 L5 in 2007 removal of dics without replacement.) But, IDK. if anyone has some ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Okay i don't have the EXACT symptoms, but I woke up 5 days ago and my left hand was pretty swollen and painful. Gradually the pain is getting more intense, swelling will NOT go away with ice or heat. If I keep it still and make sure i dont move it there is NO pain at all. Once I move my finger or my wrist the pain is aweful and shoots from my knuckles all the way up to my elbow. It is mostly in the hand and along the outside bone in my forearm. I dont recall any sort of trauma. We had been at the beach the day before this happened. Ugh, think I will go to the docs! The pain when I move is like a deep burning pain, like a lactic acid feeling....

I see most of these post have been up here a while, but I'm going to post anyway, I am 44 and male, just recently started a job doing, well lets just say its way more physical than my previous jobs, ( construction), I had an incident back 08 where my right hand was slammed under a car hood, didn't break anything, but did and still do have bad nerve damage,it swells and gets stiff and feels like someone stabbing me most of the time, i had been to numerous doctors, given everything from perc's to tramadol, and even tried to self medicate, basically just trying to learn to deal with it, now my other arm is has been feeling like most of you have described, tingly, pins and needles, severe pain radiating up the back of my arm to my arm pit, tightness, swelling, it wakes me up all through the night, it drives my girlfriend crazy, I have just started taking potasium and also trying legatrim to see, the one thing that did help was a hot bath using this stuff called bath therapy you can get it at walmart, just follow the directions, it did help for a few hours,,,anyway not sure how much longer i can type both of my hands and arms are killing me right now!!!!!!!!....
Hope this helps

you have to wear wrist supports at night. you can buy them at any pharmacy they are the ones used for carpal tunnel syndrome and you can buy them at any pharmacy.the pain is caused by fluid pressing on the median nerve but if you keep the splints on all night it will relieve this problem.you have to put them on before the pain starts to keep the wrist in a certain position this is a preventative measure but it works.

For years I have had these same symptoms! I get no sleep, I swear, I cry, I pace at night trying to get my hands to wake up, hang my hands over the bed, hot water, cold water, hand braces, I have tried all kinds of medications. Even the good pain medications don’t work. And no one can understand what you’re going thru especially at 4am. I am 29years old and my body feels like it’s going on fifty.. My hands go numb around 15 times a day.. Reading, driving, watching movies on the couch ect. At first, it was only at night and just a little numbness in my left thumb. Then out of nowhere I rip my trigger finger. Don’t even remember doing anything to it. As it progressed, came the burning and more frequent excruciating pain. Ugh just miserable. For the last 2 years I have been in search for answers. I have been to multiple doctors. I have had multiple cortisone shots. Miss diagnosed several times. First, of course was Fibromyalgia.. Basically, they don’t know what’s wrong with u so they have decided to call it that. Then, I was diagnosed with lupus.. Wrong again. Recently, I finally found a doctor that ran the correct test. I have a rare auto immune disease disorder called: MIXED CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISEASE. Which by the way is not curable.. The test that was run was an ANA test. I highly recommend if u have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia u have your doctor run this test and do some research.. Although, I finally figured out what is wrong with me and am on medications. I still experience the exact same issues. Hence why I am writing this post at 2am.. The doctor says the medication will take a few months to kick in.. But after being in so much pain for so long u don’t want to wait another second. The last year, I had noticed my elbows starting to look weird. The doctor says I have nodules growing on both of them. Which have become bigger and more painful. Although, I have been diagnosed correctly this time.. I feel like I’m going in circles. Trial and error. It’s a toss-up between Peripheral Neuropathy, Carpel Tunnel, Raynaud’s Disease, a pinched nerve somewhere, or tendonitis of the elbow. I’m having a hard time narrowing it down since most of these things have the exact same symptoms. Please help..

If I helped at least one person find the name of their disease tonight then all this typing was well worth it and hopefully u find a doctor smarter than mine so we can all help each other. Best wishes to all of you.
