I am a 41 yo female, and I've experienced this since high school.  When I experience an adrenaline rush, my lower back throbs.  I have talked to doctors about this, but everyone seems to think that it's in my head.

I'm relieved to hear that there are others experiencing this.

This ghost that doctors "don't find" is simply worn out adrenals. Other body conditions can certainly contribute to this. Caffeine, pharnaceuticals or any drugs esp if used regularly will definately run your adrenals down and they will begin to hurt when they are"asked" to work harder. I've gone to a kinesiologist/holistic doctor who found what it was right away!! Was quite a relief. Gave me excersises to do and also found other body weaknesses that contibuted to it and fixed these or gave me the knowledge to fix it! It is something very real that is occuring with your adrenals and soemthing can definately be done about it but not generally by a regular doctor - unless holistic or alternative.

hi all... i read all above and glad that i am not the only one. i am rarely frightened (or be in a fight or flight situation) but  while drving  i would get this throbbing sensation when experiencing what you would call a near-miss situation. while some would describe this as "pain" i would prefer "extreme discomfort" as although i have to grit my teeth holding it all in because i would still have to manage control over the car i consciously know that the feeling will subside in a short while followed by great relief and almost euphoric state afterwards just like Guest the Street Racer above. i thought i would find the answer online and was disbelief to see that not one know what the condition is although here this page alone a lot of ppl are experiencing similar thing.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

Wow I am so glad I am not the only one with this problem.I am 31 and a little overweight, but healthy.I am active and have great blood pressure as well.I actually get the throbbing pains up my spine and lately into my neck and head.Yes I agree when it hits there isn't anything that can be done but wait and try to calm down.I even have woke up from a stressful dream to find it has thrown my back into an attack.I wish there was some answer.Dr.s a lot of times think people just make up this stuff in their heads and they like to herd us in and out like cattle without really helping to find an answer to a problem.I hope we all might one day have answers and relief from this issue.

I have exactly the same ailment, the first time I got it was 13 years ago 6 months after having my first child, I get it when I have an adrenalin rush and sometimes I have had it if I am relaxing and I jump up to do something like get the door. I have thin basement membrane disease which basically means leaky kidneys, I dont know if they are related. I cant believe all these other people have it as well I thought I was alone! My last bout was literally 10 mins ago, my cockatiels were annoying me screaching really loud over and over so I jumped up to put them outside for some peace and low and behold, the pain came.

Same here, intense lower back pain up both sides of my lower spine throbbing with every heartbeat during or just after a stress event.

The last event was 2 days ago when I noticed on the security camera system people in a truck casing my home, just watching them drive by, then they back up and set in front of the property, then back up some more to a spot they can see up beside the home set it off, as I got ready for a possible home invasion it hit and hit hard. Keeping my eye on the camera system they drove off and the pain went away a few seconds later. The pain is not to the point I can’t function but is very sharp making me tense up more.

Just like everyone else, I've also experienced the same temporary disabling pain after a big adrenaline rush. It's been over a year since last experiencing it but it's odd & memorable enough that I still think about it. I'm not sure if it's cured or if I have simply avoided situations that bring it on. At any rate, recently, I began thinking that it could be related to a spiritual process attempting to manifest...called Kundalini Rising or Kundalini Awakening. You can research it for details but in a nutshell, it's a healing energy trapped in our root chakra (@ the base of the spine) that once released travels up your spine through your other open chakras/energy centers. Also, I had originally attributed mine to having previously had an epidural during childbirth but clearly after reading some of these other accounts, that's NOT a commonality amongst all of us :-). I'm more convinced that my kundalini is active & in need of release. I also believe this unique symptom we have will also lead to some interesting abilities once properly tapped into.

I once had this problem, but I have since found my cure... Incidentally, I only got the pain/sensation when sat down (always in a car following people's road-rage at my ignorant driving), which makes me think that when the body is effectively bent over, the release of adrenaline has more of a fight to get where it needs to go, and thus causes some kind of blockage around the glands.

This is probably a bit too radical for most readers, but to re-create the symptoms, I experimented by driving with even more inconsideration for other road users, just to get someone to take the bait and test my adrenaline rushes. I found van drivers to be the easiest of prey. Having 'pushed the bar', I can report that with the more experiences I created, the less pain there was. In fact, I now just get a dull sensation in the lower back that lasts for 10 seconds, and is no mark on my initial painful symptoms.

So people - find your own way to 'exercise' those adrenal glands, and I'm sure you too, will find your cure.

DISCLAIMER:  Please note that I don't recommend involving other innocent people for your investigations. For me, I chose to take that selfish approach as it was the only set of circumstances that created my symptoms. I now drive in a much more relaxed and considerate manner, and I should report that no-body, including myself, was hurt during my 'experimentations'.

I'm a 33 year old male, slim and up until a few years ago very active.  I was diagnosed with a prolapse in my lower spine around 18 months ago, although I had been suffering back pain long before that.  I have noticed this lower back pain/spasm develop, the latest attack came yesterday when the plane I was in hit heavy turbulence and I got scared.  The first time I really noticed it was during sexual excitement, in what sounds like a strange case, I looked out of my window and saw my very attractive neighbour naked, which set it off big time.  I had to crawl to the sofa. Sounds pretty stupid, but it was very scary.  It seems to follow all fear type adrenaline rushes now.

I hadn't met anyone who knew what I was talking about until now, so although there is no real info here, it's good to know I'm not alone.  Please post if someone has any diagnosis here.

Hi all I've had the same problem and this is how it started.  I'm a bodybuilder and was training my legs when I had a suspected bleed in my head from straining.  After a clear CT scan the doctor said I would need to have a lumber puncture to be 100% sure i was ok.  I remember DR saying they can only take a couple of drops of fluid from the adrenal gland as your body only has so much in a life time and you dont produce anymore.  Also if you have ever done Ecstasy tablets this fluid is depleted from the E.  (I havent taken e's BTW)  After the lumber puncture I was ill for 3 weeks, unable to lift my head from the intense neck and head pain and only caffine/red bull would ease the pain and make it bearable.  I would later learn this was a side effect of doing a lumber puncture to quickly.  I remember he saying to the nurse it was the quickest 1 he had ever done...!  I've had open heart surgery and the lumber and what followed was 10x worse experience! Now my point is ever since I had this lumber puncture I to have suffered these severe lower back pains after an aggressive or dangerous situation had passed.  i.e a car almost ran me off the road driving to fast on my side.  I swore at him and the big man and his mate turned around and pulled me over.  Me being me got out had a go, surprisingly he didnt get out but once he drove off and I got back in my car I was unable to move from the pain in my lower back, throbbing and cramping.  Since then in the last couple of years I've had the same lots of times.  From driving situations causing fear and adrenaline rush, to arguments/confrontation or situations of danger for myself or others also cause it.  I've never had this problem before and used to fight for our county in Judo for many years.  Adrenaline was a buzz not debilitating!  Only since the lumber puncture have I experienced these problems.  So if this helps, has any 1 ever had a lumber puncture, maybe as a child and you dont know you had, anyone ever took e's or finally caffeine because all of these things seem to have an impact on the adrenaline or gland function and I honestly belive the lumber puncture was the catalyst.

I'm 48 and have for the last three years or so experienced these symptoms when I am in stressful situations. It starts with painful throbbing sensations in my lower back and go (shoot) up my spine to the base of my skull. If I happen to be driving when during on these episodes I have to pull over to side side because the pain is unbearable. Thank God this only lasts for 1 to 3 minutes. Whenever I have told my doctor about it he just shrugs me off.

I am 68 y/o female and started experiencing the same identical symptoms a few years ago and like you no doctor can explain. I do have cirrhosis and ask my liver specialist about it and he said no way was it connected to liver ailment. The pain nearly brings me to my knees and feel as though I will faint.

I have had this for at least 10 years and it happened again tonight after an altercation and that is how I found this thread. Like everyone here I am looking for an explanation. I had kidney failure almost 8 years ago and I am a transplant recipient. The new kidney goes in front and the old ones stay in. When this happens I feel no pain in front just in back. Like all of you I am looking for an answer.

I have experienced this same problem for about 15 years, beginning at the age of 21. I have always assumed (and still believe) that this is due to back problems and muscle strain, exacerbated by adrenaline rushes. Do the rest of you have any ongoing back muscle problems? It does tend to happen as the adrenaline rush subsides, not at the peak of adrenaline, which is echoed by many of you.
