I had a really close call today driving in to work with my family.  I exchanged words with the fellow who nearly ran my car off the road.  It was the angriest I had ever been in quite some time.  After I drove off, I felt the adrenaline pumping through my body.  It felt like with every heartbeat, there was a throb of pain in my lumbar region.  I tried contracting my abdominal muscles and controlling my breathing, but it didn't help much.  With every throb of pain, I lurched forward in the driver's seat.  It lasted no more than 3 minutes, but it was very uncomfortable.

I just happened upon this thread searching for people experiencing the same symptoms.  I've had this happen before, and like many others, during close call situations, fight or flight situations, or in anticipation of some sort of stress or conflict.

I'm a 43 yo female and I thought I was the only that this was happening to. In my case this only happens when I'm really scared. I ride a sportbike, and I've had this happen to me when I've tried to push my limits, riding too fast, or when another driver almost caused me to crash or ran me off the road. I am a pretty level headed rider, I am not an adrenaline junkie so I really avoid situations which make my adrenaline kick in. This only used to happen a few times each year on my motorcycle until I started snowboarding three years ago. I'm afraid of heights, I'm especially afraid of riding chairlifts. I'd get that excruciating pain in my lower back for up to one minute or more on some chairlifts, especially the older slower smaller ones, or ones that go up very high, or on very windy days. Even with snowboarding, this still only happens less than 10 times a year. I'm in good health, eat healthy - for the last three years I've been on a raw food diet, I'm pretty much a vegetarian also, very active outdoors walking dogs and hiking, take no meds except for Exedrin for headaches. I used to get really bad migraines but never took any meds for them (three years ago I quit eating all processed foods, all convenience foods and all fast foods and now I just get headaches instead of migraines). Never had any kids.

Having never gone to a doctor to get this diagnosed I always assumed this was happening because I can't handle stress. I also get angry easily. I'm a very sensitive person physically and emotionally.

Still no MD to tell us what this is?? So many theories, not enough facts. Perhaps we're not meant to know.

Pheochromocytoma is a benign tumor around the adrenal gland. Once diagnosed it has to be removed. When an excess of adrenalin is produced and in my case from shock or fear you receive the painful throbbing around the kidneys and up the spine. The problem is that it can raise the blood pressure to a dangerous level. I am underway with my tests at the moment following symptoms for over production of cortisol. I just mentioned the kidney throbbing and the doctor knew straight away. I AM meant to know as I have already be to hospital emergency but they gave me a head scan thinking I may have had a stroke. Doctor has given me blood pressure tablets and a note stating I must attend emergency if I have another episode or severe headache and hand them the note with pheochromocytoma on for them to investigate. It takes a while here to look into unless you are an emergency.

Very interesting. I'll investigate this online and with my physician as a possibility. Never heard of it, but it certainly sounds like a possibilty. Thanks for your post.

OK, I - WE  - must find the answer to this.  The first time I experienced what I describe as the very painful feeling of far too much fluid traveling up my spine was when I nearly had a serious car incident.  The pain took my breath and I had to mentally try to conquer it sit still and wait for it to subside.  It painfully pulsed and intensified before it began to subsided - maybe two minutes back to total normal. My heart was probably beating faster but the pain up my spine was so great that's all I really noticed.

Now I've had it happen many other times when my safety is not in danger - just nerves right after sitting down from a performance that is being critiqued!

It's scarry and I want to find the solution for all of us.  Really no medical findings?  I know I've found nothing to help understand this.

I have had the same issue off and on for years. Only during high stress close calls when driving. I will consult my doctor as well.

Thank you all so much for your input! I've suffered from this condition for many years. Conventional doctors couldn't help me because in the office, during an examine, there were no symptoms. Just tonight, I had to walk up a slight hill at a fast pace. Doing this, set off the pain. It started in my lower back and inched up my spine. By the time the pain reached the base of my neck, I thought I would pass out. After an attack, I am left with a very stiff neck. I will seek the advice of a holistic specialist tomorrow. Again, thank you all!

I'm another case here.  I'm a 39 year old police officer.  Some years ago, when I was involved in high-stress intensive situations during a shift, later that day it would always feel like I strained my back.   Today, I had a speeding/reckless vehicle go by me during work.  I immediately gave chase in my patrol car and he took off even faster.  With lights and sirens blaring for several miles down the road, he finally noticed me and pulled over.  I absolutely went into my "pursuit" mode but quickly noticed a centralized pain in my lower back that felt like it was right at my spine. I thought my back was about to spasm in a big way, and moved around in my seat to loosen it up, which may have helped it, I don't know.  I just thought I would Google it and found all of you.  Interesting.  Hopefully someone can steer us in the right direction sometime soon.
