Yesterday morning, I woke up with a deep ache in the area just below/behind my right breast. The pain was severe enough to wake me up. It hurt for four-five hours diminishing to a light ache by the end of the day. I went to bed last night and fell asleep, waking up just a couple of hours later with the same pain, only stronger. I tossed and turned for two hours, trying to find a position that didn't aggravate the pain. I finally thought that maybe laying on the couch was is a little harder than our bed might help. It did, but barely. the pain was/is substantial but I am so exhausted after very little sleep for two days that I dozed off.

When I am standing up, I definitely feel the pain, but nothing like when laying down, particularly on either side.

I have no idea if I have a fractured rib or something more serious. Any ideas would really help. I'm a 51 year old female, have always been healthy and in really good shape.

I would suggest you go see your Primary Care Provider and get an X-ray and EKG. It could be something as simple as pain between the ribs called Costochodritis which is the muscle and tissue between the ribs becomes inflamed or frankly speaking cardiac in nature. I do not know how old you are or what your risk factors are but I would be getting any chest pain checked out. It could be pleuritis, Costochondritis or something Cardiac in nature. Get checked out. GOOD LUCK!
