I had similar pain and it was (spelling error?) costrocondritus. Swelling of the cartilage around the rib cage. Some times it feels like I'm being stabbed in the side. I went to the ER 1st and finally to a doc in the box who know exactly what it was. If I twist a lot or sit wierd pick up heavy objects it will come back. The pain can be sharp and last for 15 mins and then be sore for a couple of days. You can always ask the MD if he would consider it.

WOW!!! I have been looking online for some time now searching for answers and found this site. I am in wow of how many people have this same issue. I am 23 and have 2 small children (2yrs and 7mos) I have been having this pain for over 2 years now. I honestly thought I was the only one, esp when the doctors act soooo damn stumped. I have tried everything except going to the uerologist and that is next week, but reading everyone's entry makes me almost not want to even waste my time! Seeing all of this has both encouraged me, knowing that there ARE others, and scared the hell outta me, Knowing that there are those that have had it waaaay longer and still no answers! A question...have any of you showed this to your doc to see what they think? How can so many have the same thing and yet doctors are saying some of us are imagining it? My doctor is great in that way, but still clueless in a cure. If anyone finds any new info out please help!

I was so relieved when I found this post, I have had the same Pain(s) for the past year, the pain changes from time to time. I have steadily had this painful inflammation of the lower rib cage on the right side and think is definitely has something to do with the constant muscle tension in the thoracic region on the right side of my back (probably due to the stress of the unknown with what I am about to present). I have had this for a year and have been sent for an MRI, chest X ray, Ultra sound (of the region around my ribs in the front). Then in April of this year I began experiencing an urge to urinate frequently, went to the PCP and he said oh, you probably have a UTI, when the Urinalysis came back negative they said nothing was wrong and I am just experiencing the pain from stress (the old "it's all in your head"), The pain came and went. Three weeks ago the pain (to the right of my belly button down into my hip) came on so badly I ended up in the ER, where I was given another Urinalysis (negative results) and then an Ultrasound. I was told I had two Ovarian cysts and that that was the source of my pain. I was sent home with Hydroprofen and told to see my OBGYN.
I saw the OBGYN who told me the cysts were so small they could not possibly be the source of pain. I then went back to my regular Doc and mentioned the Kidney stone possibility as EVERYONE in my family has had them. The doc said no way, as the Urinalysis came back normal and I've not had any blood in my urine. I then demanded a CT scan, sure enough it came back with the doc stating I have several stones in both kidneys. I have since had another CT scan as my Urologist did not like the way the first one came out and am awaiting his better informed analysis of my stones. All I can say is that in this day and age where Health Care is costing us More and More you have to be your own doctor. You must research and inform yourself unfortunately! WHO IS YOUR DOCTOR TO SAY WHAT SHOULD CAUSE PAIN AND WHAT SHOULDN"T. Our bodies are unique and we all have different pain thresh holds. Some Doctor's just don't care, or are misinformed themselves and it is up to us to do just what we are doing here in this forum: educate each other and ourselves. I am very grateful to have found others with the same health issues I have encountered. I wish you all well.

I'm in the midst of testing trying to locate the cause of something similar. For the last 4 years I've had intermittent right flank soreness to pain. Lacking health insurance until recently, I simply put it off as it wasn't excruciating. It has come and gone over time. There have been months when it got worse and worse and then suddenly subsided, and months where I didn't feel it at all. Or it might come back for a day or two then go away again. I had one weekend maybe a year after I'd noticed it where pain became more severe and I spent the better part of a day on the couch, but was better the next morning. This has continued for 3 years since then, I kept putting off seeing a doctor but in the back of my mind wondering what the heck it could be has been a drain.

The pain is down in my right flank area. I haven't been able to pinpoint any correlating factors in diet, exercise, stress, or otherwise that coincide with the onset of the soreness. In trying to think of an analogy of what the soreness is like, it's almost like I scraped an elbow in that I'm aware of it but can mostly zone it out, but in the interior of my right flank. I've noticed that I can feel it more acutely with each step when I walk, but this doesn't become any more severe for activities like running or jumping rope. Stretching the area in different ways does not seem to affect the soreness. Smooth transition of g-forces such as braking/accelerating in a car or roller-coasters, or that spinning-UFO-ride-thing they have at carnivals doesn't seem to affect it. I have no family history of kidney stones or cancers, or anything else that I'm aware of.

First trip to the doctor to discuss the issue, I had no health insurance at the time, we primarily covered kidney stones. I had no blood in my urine at the time. I tend to drink quite a bit of diet coke, like 64oz+ a day, as a source of caffeine (not a coffee fan), which my doctor did not seem the least bit concerned by. She expressed multiple studies had failed to correlate soda drinking with kidney stones and stated that it was essentially just more hydration. At the time my doctor did not want to do more testing due to cost and recommended drinking more liquids--which I did, reaching a point where I was drinking maybe 2 gallons of water a day with no effect, other than some irregular heart-beats which sounded enough like water intoxication that I brought it back to normal levels.

Armed with insurance I've revisited the issue. On the second visit there was still no blood in my urine sample, and they sent me for a CT of the area. No kidney stones were visible from the CT given. My doctor's next step is to do another CT with dye, which I'm waiting for, has sent a urine sample out for more thorough testing, and will be having blood tested. She wants to look over both CT's with the doctor that will be interpreting them once they're in.

I'm kinda a dork when it comes to science stuff so my unease about the issue has largely given way to interest in how they go about diagnosing and eventually treating the issue. Just found out I can buy copies of my CT scans on a cd for $15. =) Taking action is definitely helping my frame of mind about the whole thing. I'll revisit the thread and share the rest of my experience once we find out what the heck is up as it sounds like something other than kidney stones for me.

My daughter is 17 years old and has had pain on her right side just below her ribs for at least 2 yrs. She has had blood work, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, hideascan(gall bladder), endoscopy(stomach) and now waiting for results of a cat scan. Nothing is showing up, but pain has continued to worsen and last longer. I am so frustrated!!!

I was 30 yrs old when i started seeing doctors in 1992 that is when i first started having pelvic pain and pain in the right flank that comes and goes. Since then i have had pelvic ultra sounds, laparoscopy, colonoscopy, stomach tests, test for kidyney stones, gall bladder and all sorts of blood work done and even had a hysterectomy (in 1996), which helped with some of the pain a little bit, but as time has gone on symtoms have gotten worse and it started affecting my bladder & lower back, sinuses, joint pain and asthma. i finally went to see a urologist and he finally diagnosed me with interstitial cystitis this disease that is not to well known by doctors and it is hard to diagnose. I have been taking medication for this and do feel a lot better but i still have the right side flank pain. I hope this post can help both women & men with what ever you may be going though.

Your symptoms seem to depict one - or more - ovarian cyst(s)

Some cysts are NOT visible through ultrasound - DEMAND a CT Scan

Good luck - It's painful, I know ;-)

I have been dealing with the same pain for about 2 weeks now. This originally started in Feb '07 and the hospital said it was a kidney infection - no stones found. I have no gall bladder or appendix.

Now, 2 weeks ago I started with the pain again, saw my doctor who tested my urine and determined that I had a kidney infection. The pain was still there and just as bad this week so I went to the hospital (North Arundel Hospital) and they didn't do ANYTHING for me. they gave me some strong advil and sent me home. told me that since I had a ct scan the week before, they could not do anything for me. told me to come back to the hospital if the pain got worse. they denied my request to do an ultrasound. they didn't even take my temp and I have been nursing a low-grade fever for 2 weeks. they said that if the pain got worse or i got a fever (which I already had) to come back to the ER, but why go back if they won't treat me?? All the blood work and urinalysis was normal.

Well, this is disheartening. I was hoping for some answers, but at least I know a lot of people out there are going through the same thing or something similar. My pain started out with discomfort during intercourse -- at first just a feeling of uncomfortable pressure, but more recently pain. I started having weird twinges in my right side and went to a clinic as my family dr. was on vacation. The dr. suggested PID, even though I told him it was v. unlikely I had an STD (had a v. serious talk with my husband when I got home!), but he put me on 2 antibiotics and tested me for STDs (came back negative). A few days after starting the antibiotics, the pain got worse, and I felt a constant pressure in my right side, like something was swollen. It went from right down in the right side of my pelvic region to up to my right ribs. I had a slight back ache, too. The pain was never unmanageable, but a constant, slight pressure.

As my dr. was still away, I went to emerg. They did a very indepth ultrasound of pretty much everywhere in my adominal area, and even did inter-vag. They found nothing. My blood work and urine also came back normal. The pain improved without medication, but I still felt the odd twinge. I got an appt. with my OBGYN, and she said everything looked fine too. My family doctor is stumped. She told me to pay attention to what I'm eating... I have thought that I might be becoming lactose intolerant, but mostly just seemed to have problems with ice cream. I guess I'll start eliminating a lot of things, and see if that makes a difference. Especially since the pain has come back stronger in the past 2 days and I'm becoming more and more uncomfortable.

This has only been going on for 2 months for me -- I can't believe some of you have been without answers for years. I hope we all find something out soon! I'll let you know if I figure it out.
