I woke up one morning with burning pain in my back right side. the next day I woke up the burning pain was gone but my right side below my rib cage feels like a lump is inside. and also my right flank is numb, I feel what ever the lump is that is what is putting pressure making me numb, been this way over 2 weeks, had 2 ultra sounds. abdomin and pelvic both show nothing. blood work is okay and also a back x ray all normal.

WOW I cant believe alls these people have the same problem as me and NO ONE knows what it is. I had a kidney stone the size of a golf ball removed in 1999 and my gallbladder removed in 2005 after my gallbladder was removed I noticed if I would stretch far to the right I would get a shooting pain in my right rib cage. Three weeks ago I had serve pain in my right side kinda feels like under my rib cage and goes to my back it got a little better after a week went to the doc he did took blood and urine everything came back fine he said I must of pulled muscle in my side and back he said the pain I feel when I strecth far to the right is probably adhesions from the gallbladder surgery well he put me on muscle relaxers and anit inflammatory and they worked somewhat for a week than I bent down to pick my daughter up and felt a shooting pain up my ride side it got so bad Tuesday night it felt like someone was twisting my insides I could barley breathe and was in tears I went to the hosptial they did blood, urine, and ct scan with the dye everything came back normal. here I am now the pain is less but I still feel a dull ache on one side I noticed my stomach is also bloated sometimes and I feel a fullness on the right side it also feels like something is trying to poke threw my skin at the bottom of my right ribcage I also have been burping alot. I have been thinking about doing a liver cleanse I hear you can still make gallstones without a gallbladder go figure as anyone tried the cleanse? Has anyone found an answer yet please let us know. We can only pray the doctors will figure this out soon.

please post if and when you do. Many of us seem in a similar boat. i also have stones on my appendix in addition to ovarian cyst, (neither of which they believe causes the pain) UTI and abd, lower back and flank pain.

I am happy to know there are others suffering with this similar issue of right side under the rib, flank and mid back pain. Not knowing where to turn or how to explain it, I'm relieve to know I am not alone. My case is similar. I've had this pain, a dull, annoying discomfort in that region off and on about a year. My gyn check ups, blood, and urinanalysis, are all normal. The doctors didn't feel a need to investigate further even after I noticed my midrift buldge being slightly larger on my right side then my left. I thought it was my imagination and that I was over compensation on my right side due to a heel spur on my left foot throwing my gait off causing the flank, right side, mid back discomfort or muscle strain that never cleared up. I exercise reguarly and try to eat better which lessens the discomfort but I know it's still there.
I am working on that orthotic, good posture is a must and as soon as I get the health coverage to further investigate, extentsive testing will be requested. Thanks so much to you all. .

Flank pain is one of the most difficult maladies to diagnose and treat. So often, all testing shows nothing abnormal. There IS something being studied and that's the connection with the use of antibiotics. The theory being that the antibiotics cause a temporary condition with the kidneys that produces no abnormalities detected through urinalysis, blood work, CT or other imaging (ultrasound, etc.). This is a promising new possibility of the cause of this flank pain that too often is finally written off as psychological. I have always disagreed with this and look forward to the report on antibiotic use and flank pain. Best of luck to you all.

I have had the same experience pretty much as everyone else. My pain started shortly after the birth of my first child. I have dealt with this pain for over 5 years. It starts as a burning pain in the lower right side of my abdomen. It then begins to throb. I have had ultra sounds and test ran, but everything has come back normal. I have tried to go on with the pain, but its hard. The pain is especially hard to deal with when sitting. Hopefully, somebody will be able to figure this out.

O my god. I have the same thing. Side and flank pain on right and a little on the left. I too had ovarian cysts. I'm wondering now if my problem is endometriosis since all m ultrasounds came out normal. I had a UTI so I was convinced it must be a kidney infection but US came normal. I'm on the pill so I think my cysts are better. But the pain is so bad and will not go away. Help!!!@

This is unbelievable...
Here I thought that I was struggling alone and I find this site. My symptoms began with bilateral swelling of my legs 18 months ago. From there they began testing my kidney function for fear that something was not working properly. My creatinine levels were slightly elevated but not enough to cause concern but after the swelling continued and periodic tests did not show the creatinine levels returning to normal the doctor ordered an ultrasound to look for cysts or polyps. Neither of these were present but the ultrasound picked up two small kidney stones in my right side.
Since finding the stones I have been gradually experiencing more and more symptoms. At first I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me. Now that I knew I had the stones all of a sudden I am having symptoms. The doctor reassured me that the stones should not be causing any pain. All in all I just don't feel right. Swelling of legs comes and goes but the flank pain and fullness is pretty constant and more dramatic after a meal. Almost like there is something in there that is crowding everything and a full stomach is not helping. I do not drink alcohol anymore because I feel increased pain the following day. Doctor thought that I had a blockage that was backing things up in the kidney. Nuclear renal scan came back negative. CT scan shows nothing abnormal. My skin looks awful. I have more acne at 31 than any other time in my life. UGH!!!
I can't believe there are so many posts on this same topic and there has yet to be any end in sight. At my last doctors appt. I brought along a couple of posts from this site to show him I wasn't crazy and he still shrugged with no answers.
I am a very active and fit person. I exercise at least 5-6 days a week and run about 4 miles every morning for a total of about 25 to 30 miles a week. I eat fairly healthy with the occasional indulgence of pizza or icecream. I see that there are other who state they are very active as well...Could this be one of the problems? I am willing to look at anything.
If anyone knows anything...I am sure I can speak for everyone in saying...PLEASE LET US KNOW SO WE CAN TELL OUR DOCTORS WHAT TO LOOK FOR!!!
Thanks, Anna

Me too!
It's been just over 2 months. I'm in agony. Had a CT, IVP, 2 renal ultrasounds, 2 back xrays, EGD, colonoscopy, upper GI and small bowel follow through. Scopes showed some GI inflammation, but biopsies were negative for everything (allergies, Crohns, etc). Had a stone but it's small and still in the left kidney (pain is all on right)
It always hurts - worse when sitting - heat helps a little. No meds seem to help and I don't really do well with pain meds so I don't want them anyway. I always have a sense of fullness, stretching, then cramping and burning periodically.
I'm so frustrated it's unreal.
