Wow, I too have the same problem as everyone. But my pain starts under my right rib (gallbladder out 4 years ago) and goes across the top of my abdomen. It is a severe pain that lasts for 4-5 hours. Then I am sick for about 3 days afterwards. I have had 5 episodes of this in the past 3 months. Was sent to a gastroenterologist who apparently just got out of med school and knew NOTHING. First he said I had kidney stones (5 in three months? Really?), then he said it was muscle spasms (which cause me to vomit blood?) then I suggested maybe bile reflux and he said no, then said maybe, then gave me Carafate for an ulcer and said come back in 6 weeks. That was a total waste of money. All my tests have been negative too. I am not sure what my next step is, but one thing is for sure, I am NOT paying big bucks to go to that Doogie Howser doctor again.

Well I see that I am not alone here. I had my gallbladder removed in 1999 and wish I never would have now. I had a sharp pain in my side every couple of months and then said it was my gallbladder and removed it. Now I have had severe pain off and on for 14 years now under my right bottom rib cage. I have been to many doctors and heard so many different diagnosis. My gastroenologist says that he thinks my tube they connected could be narrowed causing pain when food goes through it. The only test for this is a scope that is dangerous because it can cause pancreatitis and they only do it if you can't go to the bathroom. Other doctors have said its phantom gall bladder pain, my floating rib hitting organs, etc. I have heard it all. I was on here looking for a new gastroenologist to go see as I feel mine does nothing but try to prescribe medication for me to try. Sometimes it is really painful and other times doesn't hurt much and I guess I have resigned myself to living with it but I always have hopes that they could do something. I still get the pain in my right side still so obviously it wasn't my gallbladder. Anyone thinking of having their gallbladder out, don't. They told my dad that he needed to have his out but he is doing alternative stuff like flushes and they seem to work for him. Also, I had diarrhea real bad for 2 years after the surgery but that did go away but unfortunately the rib pain seems to get worse with time with no end in sight!

I am so relieved to have found this discussion, I had my gall bladder out a year via keyhole surgery and get this pain every 4-6 weeks, sometimes more often.
I was up all last night with the pain and every doctor says it is nothing!! I feel like crying when I realise i will probably just have to live with this for my entire life?!
At least I know there are other sufferers and its not just me! :)

I had my gall bladder removed in December, 2010. The first 6 months were fine, but after that, I started to get pain under my right ribcage, up high, which is only relieved when do stretching exercises.
I was told by my surgeon that it could take a very long time for my liver to completely heal on the inside from the trauma of having the gall bladder removed and even though my exterior was healed, to treat my interior gently. I have a hard time believing that such healing would take 2 years?
I wear underwire bras, and I can't wear a bra all day since it puts pressure directly on the spot that gives me pain when I sit down. Now, two years later, I've gained around 35 lbs, and have a hard mass in my upper abdomen. Unfortunately for me, the best I can do for myself is research, as I am unemployed, and have no health insurance. I don't qualify for medicaid as I make "too much" on unemployment. So going back to a doctor is out for me.
I've modified my diet to easily digested foods, and have opted to eat foods that are recommended for the treatment of a hiatal hernia. I may have one - I may not. Who knows? I certainly won't know until I can get health insurance, but my symptoms tell me I do. Acid reflux, pain in back, and the hard mass in my upper ab.
The pain in my right side just won't go away, though. It's okay in the mornings and afternoons as long as I don't sit a lot. If I'm driving or I find I'm sitting for long periods, I wind up in agony during the evenings. The only thing I can think is that there is too much pressure on the surgical site.
My surgeon told me that the removal of an organ from the body makes room for the other organs to shift. This sounds like it could lead to many complications and I'm wondering if this pain and the hiatal hernia symptoms aren't a part of that "shiftin." Anyone have any advice (that doesn't include "go to a doctor" since I have no money, insurance or medicaid)?
Stretching DOES help. I hang off the side of my bed to stretch my abs out every night. It truly helps with the pain - but let's face it - when I finally get a job and go back to work, I doubt I'll be able to stretch my abs out that way! :)
I'm 51, never had health issues, and until now, never had a belly. Now I look 5 months pregnant. I'd really like it to go away (without giving birth! hahaha!)
Any takers on this one?

My Doctor explained that my pain was related to the "adhesion's" that develop after surgery. There is scar tissue that apparently formed and I can feel them when I lay down and they are hard striations. I have found that there is also a diet connection; if I eat wheat or gluten I get much worse.
I began drinking hot water with ginger root cut up in it (real root not tea) and then in the morning tumeric root with just a touch of molasses in hot water. While I still have some discomfort........I don't have the intense pain that I had unless I eat something that doesn't agree with me.
Regular bowel movements are also imperative!

Some of the same symptoms. I had pneumonia a little over a month ago and one day after not sleeping for days and days I woke up after taking what was not a smart amount of various medications to help me sleep and help my symptoms. Well, I slept but I woke up with the feeling I had been shot through and through from under my left rib cage and out the back. I feared that I damaged my liver and was so embarrassed I didn't go see anyone and lived in agony and off of left over pain killers for a good week or so. I couldn't lay on my front or back without it making it worse, when I ate right after each swallow it hurt really bad, I felt bloated right under my rib cage, and was easily out of breath. At times it felt like I was having a heart attack. I finally went in after being out of pain meds and the doc was really concerned. They did blood work and that was all find, so no worries about liver or gallbladder so she was concerned I had a pulmonary embolism but I had no other symptoms related to that. Still, she wanted a catscan to be sure but I wasn't about to pay for that. So I went home and did TONS of research. I came to the conclusion I had developed GERD. So I went and bought some over the counter 150 strength generic zantac to find out if that was my ailment. Sure enough after two days of taking it twice a day my symptoms pretty much went away. I stopped taking it to make sure I wasn't just better and it was a coincidence and yep after a day it came back. I called my Doc and she agreed (my thought is why didn't she realize this!?!?) So I started back up on a prescrip of same med and have been on it for the past week and pretty much prob free. If I forget to take my night dose I know because I start coughing which is another symptom because the acid is irritating your throat. I go take it and in about 30 min stop coughing. I hope this reaches and helps everyone scared to death by these symptoms like I was. It is a pretty cheap test to see if this is your issue without paying for all the other tests. HOWEVER! If you have a change in your stool like some people have said tarry looking or bloody GO TO THE DOCTOR because that is not GERD, that would likely be a peptic ulcer or something else similar which can be an emergency.

Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD)
SOD describes the situation where the sphincter goes into “spasm”, causing temporary back up of biliary and panctreatic juices, resulting in attacks of abdominal pain (or pancreatitis). The pain symptoms are very similar to those caused by bile duct or gallbladder stones. Indeed, sphincter of Oddi dysfunction most frequently occurs in patients who have previously undergone removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). SOD may be one manifestation of other muscular spasm problems in different areas of the body (such as the esophagus, or intestine – irritable bowel syndrome). However, in some patients, it is the prevailing complaint, and requires focal attention.

I had my gallbladder removed in 2000. I had the rib pain before surgery to the point I could not eat or drink without the pain becoming worse. I still get the rib pain and most times I find relief once I use the bathroom but not when I have diarrhea. The doctors told me if I still had the problem to return because it could be a intestinal issue as well. I only have the pain from time to time. When i do it's so bad I wish I were have that 5 and a half hours of labor again as opposed to this pain. Using the bathroom after eating is common. Due to pain in hips and other joints and a constant rash that never goes away I am being tested for Lupus.

Sorry to hear you are being tested for lupus. That is truly scary. After my gallbladder removal, my husband planned a carnival cruise. I had such pain the second week after surgery, I felt like nothing was digesting and that all liquids were not moving through my system, and backing up like a clogged sink. I went to the doctor in tears, and he prescribed me anti anxiety medication and something for acid. I never took the anxiety meds, and tried the acid prescription but it didn't touch the problem. I went to the awesome web site gallbladder attack. I had already tried the betaine and bile salts and they provided some relief, but I went to my local natural foods store and bought choline. Man, what a difference! The pain almost completely went away when I took it. It was like night and day! This week the pain is coming back, right where it was when I had a gallbladder. I have not taken choline for almost ten months. I am now unsure whether it is kidney stones or liver. How unfortunate. I guess time will tell. I am not recommending this, do your own research, but this worked for me.
I do believe in natural remedies, and I've got Hashimotos Thyroiditis. My current doctor who doesn't accept insurance, advised me to read the book Wheat Belly. I did, and now I am eating gluten free. My TPO antibodies dropped from 466 to 190 after going on a gluten free diet within 2.5 months. The book relates genetically modified wheat to all auto immune disorders, so try going wheat free and see what happens. My next step is to cut corn. I am almost dairy free too, and I must say original brand Almond milk tastes almost like cow milk to me now. If only I could cut the morning greek yogurt, I'd be set. One thing at a time, though.
Good luck to everyone!

Hello,
I was wondering if you could please tell me how they resolved the scar tissue pain and also what your symptoms were prior to discovery?
I have random burning pain, tearing and stabbing feelings that I have had for many years, and I have often thought about scar tissue problems
