I've been having such pains at every period for more than 3 years now :-(( And I don't know where I'm going wrong in my diet. Its so bad that I cant even work on the first day,and then everything goes back to normal.Could anyone please suggest how to make these pains go by "eating right"? I eat three meals a day,at the correct times, and also exercise. However,no cure yet

hi there girls.
ow dear all our poor pain.
I have This pain.
and lower back < thigh and abdominal pain , and yes often bowel pain < all related to endo.
I just had a laporascope and thay found mod endo and yes had several spots on my bouwl. no adhesions though(scare tisue) the pain makes it feel like there would be a lot moore to look at than a few spots!
I am still having painful wind so i am going to get a referal from gp and have it cheked through a gastroenterologis to be on the safe side.
I feel for the visitore in her 20"s who is a virgin.
my Gynicologist a womin , her name is hana fa Koya she is based in New Zealand but she travels to other countrys to treat.
She is able to preserv the hymen and take coltural practises in to
consideration.
Easy non invasive thing to try is Prgesterone cream.
it has to be synthetic natural progesterone cream.
That means it has to come from wild yam but have been prosesed so it is the same as the progesterone in our bodys< i think thay add an enzyme so your body dosent have to convert it. Chek out Dr redwine's web site.
Good thing to try if you really cant for what ever reson see a specialists.
You aply a teaspoon( i think) on to a soft area of skin such as iner elbow or belly and behind your neas ect. You have to rotate were you poot the cream, you rub it in to the skin. It can take 3 to 6 month to feel the benefit. cant remember if you have to stop for one week a month for your period.

Heya,
I'm so glad I found this place. I've just come back from trying to go to the toilet - excruciating. It's so humiliating for a simple act of passing stool the size of a pea to leave me crying hysterically. Here's my main problem:
I'm 18. For the last 4 years I've been battling severe cramps, enough that I can't walk, as well as other symtoms. Gradually my periods have become shorter but also the pain is now condensed into very bad first two, three days, as well as severe pre-period cramps up to two weeks before I'm due. Now I went to the doctor about this just over a year ago and have since been on about 3 different NSAIDs for the pain, none worked. Am on my 3rd type of contraceptive (Loestorin) and doing the trimonthly period thing. None of this has helped. The problem is that I went for an ultrasound and the doctor called to say that my scan was normal (no endometriosis despite me having all the symtoms) and instead they think my ovaries are polycystic. Now I've looked up the symtoms for polycystic ovaries and I have none of them - I didn't think they could case these period pain problems.
Do you think the doctors have made a misdiagnosis/ should I ask them to do a lacroscopy (not sure of spelling) to be certain that it's not endometriosis? I'm just really confused and so sick of going through this pain right now, I don't think I can bear it much longer. I really just need a place like this where I can talk to people with similar problems and ask for advice.
On the side note of pain while defecating - I'm on iron tablets which cause constipation. Should I stop taking these the week before my period and see if it makes a difference? What other dietary tips can people give.
Many thanks,
L.

I've been experiencing this exact same pain for almost 2 years now, however i only feel during the first few days of menstruation. i find myself in such excrutiating pain particularly in the rectal area before and during i have a bowel movement that it's so hard not to scream. one time i came seconds away from blacking-out in public because the pain was so bad. does this happen to anyone else especially while they're mentruating? if i start to pull out a tampon that's a little too dry, it triggers the same rectal pain as i pull the string but then it stops once i stop pulling the string. I've had 2 pap smears done and an ultrasound. my gynocologist told me i don't have endometriosis, and the ultrasound showed no ovarian systs. she said eveything was fine with my rectum and suggested it could be a muscle spasm, but how could a muscle spasm be so painful and last for so long? i find the pain in the strongest when i'm going though a stressful time. my gyno suggested seeing a GI doctor. What have any of you found out from going to the GI doctor with these symptoms. also, some of you mentioned a LAP test/surgery. what is that?

I am 30 and have been dealing with this since the very day i got my period. I have two children and it didnt get any better after having them. I feel like i'm in labor when i have a bowel movement during my period. I was born with a tilted uterus and it leans against my cervix. My mother had the same thing. I was told that if i push slightly and lift up on each side above the pelvic bone that it would help relieve the pain, and it works for me.

Same here - I could hardly walk to the toilet this morning and am around a good 24 hours into period... happens every month. Pain is not at the rectum - feels around 10cms maybe (4") inside me, like I'm sh**ting a razor blade in that section... one child, natural delivery, 34 years of age. Had an ultrasound and nothing showed except a few cysts. My GP volunteered to do a rectal exam when I saw him last as he said it might be endo in my 'pouch of douglas'. I looked up an anatomical cross-section picture online, and I think it's the right area....so, next period, day two, I am going to see him for the rectal... I hope he finds the problem.... I am scared this will happen in public (the pain, not the rectal exam...) or at work, etc. It is like crapping a knife.... I can't describe it any other way. I have dealt with it by taking pain killers around the clock since this morning and will do until the first 72 hours of my period are over. This is just a bandaid, but I can't function any other way.... PS. I am an office worker and do little cardio exercise, and am a little overweight, but not a lot. My 'gut' feeling is its hormonal.... I must be secreting abnormal levels of something...??? A lot of people here without advice of curing the problem.... I hope we all do.... please post if anything you change in your life helps alleviate, if not eradicate, the pain.

If s/he's not done a laproscopy then she can't be certain it's not endometriosis. I just went to my GP this morning (am 'L' from post above yours btw.) and I just had an ultrasound. No endometrial tissues on my ovaries and the cysts were likely chance findings.
As far as I can tell a laproscopy is necessary to diagnose endo, and I think they put you under general anaesthetic and insert a camera into the abdominal area. If patches of endometrium are small, surgry can be done while you are under the anaesthetic. Larger patches may require furhter operation or if surgery isn't a good option, through hormone treatment by reducing oestrogen production.
I'm asking to be referred back to the hospital to have one of these so at least I can be certain whether I have endo or not. At the moment, the potential for permanent side effects from hormone therapy means even this young I'm favouring surgery if they find I need things removing, especially if things are wrapped around the rectal area and thus giving me pain. Anyone got any advice on this/has been through suregery/ can recommend or deter me from my choice? Because all I can see right now as options are surgery, hormones or just learning to live with this and none of those three options seem ideal.
Thoughts appreciated.

I've read every single post on this thread and thought I should add my own. Background: 24 yr old female. Got pregnant over a year ago. Had an abortion last November. Had an IUD placed in early December. Since then, I've been dealing with sharp pains (almost like cramps) located in my anus when either passing gas or a bowel movement during my period. At first, I thought it was the IUD. My period, in general, became tormenting due to the size of my uterus. I went to my doctor and he gave be high doze ibuprofen to calm the pain. Surprisingly, it worked. It also worked on the sharp pain during bm's. After a year, my regular period cramps have become bareable and the pain that i get during bm's has diminished significantly. I curiously searched for alternative reasons for the pain and came across this thread. I'm a bit concerned because of all the talk about endomitriosis. I have an appointment with my doctor in a few days. I will come back with any information that I get. I wish you all the best of luck.

this happens to me too, I know this may sound weird and crazy but whenever it kills to go to the bathroom during my period, I stand up from the toilet a little bit....like while your going number 2, stand up or even squat a little, you dont have to stand straight up. I know that sounds weird, but it seems like when you are bent over you are putting even more pressure on an area that has enough....This may relieve the pain a little bit. I know it helps me.

I experienced this same thing a couple of years ago. I knew something wasn't right. I experienced pain during bowel movements when I was having my period. At the time I was also trying to conceive with no success. I basically recommended laproscopic surgery to my gyno, because I needed some resolution to the problem and I wanted to have my tubes checked to see if they were blocked. During the surgery, the Dr. found that I had an endometrioma on my left ovary that had adhesed to my bowel. She ended up removing the left ovary along with the endometrioma. After that the pain was gone. Endometriosis can only be diagnosed by internal examination. I highly recommend seeing your Gyno about the pain you are experiencing. I could not have continued with the pain.

I get a terrible sharp pain in the left side of my abdomen during the first 48 hours of my period. I have seen the doctor and had an ultra-sound which shows my ovaries and womb as all ok. The pain can be slightly relieved by passing wind or a bowel movement but it is agony at the time. My doctor says it might just be hormonal! Can anyone help?

I can totally relate and am relieved to find out I'm not alone in this.
This all happened after I had given birth to my daughter in April 05. I had very mild period pains before I became a mother so was very surprised to discover sharp pains during the first 2 days of menstruation every month. It would subside after bowel movements and sometimes I would need to go up to 3 times a day.
I never saw a Dr. about this but will see one tomorrow after what happened today.
I had the most excruciating pain and I wasn't even menstruating so I knew it was cause for concern. Basically I felt the urge to go and during so I had severe abdominal pains! It lasted up to an hour and throughout the day my stomach felt tender and just wasn't right.
This is the first time it's happened when I'm NOT menstruating. I just hope it doesn't happen again because it was so agonising.
I will see what the Dr. has to say tomorrow and post back.

I had an ultrasound too - basically they're useful for showing up cysts etc. in ovaries but not endometriosis, which is the most probably cause for the kinda of problems most women in here are describing. If you want suggestions, best I can say is:
-If you're not on the contraceptive pill already, and have no issues with taking it, then ask your doctor to give you those as not only do they regulate periods they're meant to reduce pain as well.
-Strong painkillers. At the moment I'm on a NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory) which I combine with paracetamol-codeine as well and it's better than just taking anything on its own. Be warned about side effects, but for any type of pain strong medication can be prescribed.
-If it continues, just go back to your doctor and ask for some more input. Because "it might be hormonal" is pretty useless.
I'm due for my period in a week and already having very bad cramps and it's not enjoyable. While on the subject though, and since I might as well ask here where there's no shame in talking about our problems - I've found since my period pains got worse I've also started having cramps whenever I become sexually aroused or anything. And since I started trying to have sex a couple of months ago it gives me cramps too. Does anyone else have this kind of a problem? I was too embarrassed to ask my doctor about it..but it makes things pretty awkward for me sometimes.
