Back in 2004, when my husband and I were having sex, I got this terrible lower abdominal pain. It was so bad, I had to stay in the fetal position and would not move. Finally, after about a half an hour, with my husband's assistance, I put my clothes on and we went to the ER. I could not sit because I had terrible pain in my lower back (way down by my tail bone), so I lad to lay down in the backseat.
At the ER, they made sure I wasn't pregnant and did a pelvic exam. They found nothing and that was that. I never had that issue again.
After giving birth to my daughter in 2007, I've had other issues:
1. I can not go through the night without having to go to the bathroom at least once. OR, if I wake up in the morning, my stomach is KILLING me as if I haven't gone to the bathroom all day. After I pee, the pain lingers for a while, but eventually goes away.
2. During the first couple days of my period, if I have to pass gas or have a BM, I get that SAME terrible abdominal pain and it shoots to my tailbone. I sit there clenching my fists, or squeezing my legs until the pain passes. When I try to push, it triggers the pain, so I stop pushing in fear of the pain and wait it out for a bit.
3. Sex with my husband with me on top DOES NOT WORK anymore. We NEVER had an issue before I got pregnant. Now? I feel like something is blocking him from entering. We've even tried the sideways position, then moving up top. Nope. Doesn't work. There is some door there preventing him from going further.
4. Nausea. This could be completely unrelated to everything else. Who knows!
Let's see what the doctor says on Wednesday![/list]

i dont really have any Idea of what might be wrong with me..
I also had this itchy and burning sensation in my private area when i have my vaginal discharge. And what bothered me most is that there was a tinge of blood to it. I had this after a week of my last menstrual period. I went to the doctor and diagnosed me with UTI. I just started my medication and after I week, they will check if there are some improvements. (Anyway, this doesnt have any relation to what I have mentioned previously on my first paragraph. I just wanted to share)
IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME WITH MY PAINFUL FARTING AND BOWEL MOVEMENTS OR MY BURNING AND ITCHY RED-TINGED VAGINAL DISCHARGE, PLEASE DO.. :-(

I was the guest from Australia two posts ago. I have since done a lot of research, seen my doctor and bought a brilliant book. I have discovered that a good gyno is going to be your best chance of helping what may be wrong with us. I was lucky enough to have a doctor who was happy to refer me to the gyno of my choice. Her name is Dr Susan Evans and she has written a book called "Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain". I am lucky enough to live in the same city as she does and can see her personally, but for those of you who are in America and other places this book may be just as useful. You can only buy it directly from her at although I am unsure if they ship to the US, but you can try. The book has rave reviews, this is just one,
"The display of appreciation and empathy of this enigmatic condition is evident on every page and surpasses any other effort to date.
Dr Evans’ follow-up on her first endeavour makes for a truly remarkable read. Although meant for patients intent on medical advice, they would not be the only ones to gain from the experience.
Good sense, comprehensiveness and clarity are the essence of a good read. This, I would say, is a good read."
Dr Hanifullah Khan,
Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Lumut, Malaysia
To the 18 year old who last posted asked if you can detect endometriosis through an ultrasound, dr evans in the book says usually not. What it can show is if there is chocolate cysts or an ovarian cyst. An ultrasound will show the size of the ovary, but not whether it has spots on its surface.
I hope that helps.
The book is great in that it descibes all the sorts of different pains and what may be the cause etc and what can be done about them. It's great for those who maybe cannot afford to go to a doctor as it has a lot of information on what methods of pain relief might help particular pains.
I am enjoying this book, if you are able to get hold of it I hope it is helpful to you all too.

I think I MAY have a solution to your problem. A few years ago I also started having painful bowel movements only while menstruating. I was on the pill (Marvelon), and when I mentioned it to my doctor, he said it could be related to hormone levels (can't remember which hormone though - maybe estrogen?). Anyways, he suggested I switch birth control brand (one with less of that particular hormone). I started taking Demulen instead and voilà - my painful bowel movements disappeared immediately!!!
The weird thing is I had a miscarriage 10 days ago (at 8 weeks) and have since then been having similar pains every time I have a bowel movement. Maybe my hormone levels are out of whack again. I won't be going back on the pill again (still trying to conceive), so I won't be able to test this theory. But it definitely worked the first time, so maybe you guys should at least discuss this option with your doctors.
Good luck!

Minor update: went to doctor AGAIN and got told that everything internally is completely normal. Doctor said what I am experiencing must just "be on the upper end of what's completely normal for a woman." To be honest, that's not much help and not entirely convincing but... Am now on muscle-relaxant to try to ease at least the bowel pains. Have a period in 2 weeks and I'm trying to get as much liquid food and fibre into my diet as I can. Avoid anything that's overly solid or that might cause constipation. Will see how it goes....
Sounds pretty frustrating but it sounds also like you're making some good progress. Can you keep us updated on your condition? It sounds like you're getting somewhere.
Man, I have been neglecting this thread. Completely lost track of it with other things going on in my life... Sorry to hear it's not letting up for any of us :/ and welcome to the new people on the thread, I can vouch that it really was a huge relief to find I was not alone in suffering with this!
First an update: I took the muscle-relaxant the doctor prescribed. As I spent the whole week prior to my period avoiding coke or anything gassy, I can only assume that the sudden increase in the amount of gas I was passing was from the medication. And boy did it hurt. Instead of reducing the amount of pain I was in, all it did was make me pass wind more so the pain was more frequent! I now don't know what to do for my next period, which is in a few days. It's sure not going to be a fun way to spend New Year's Eve.
To the girl who posted a few posts up: No, an ultrasound cannot definitvely confirm or disconfirm endometriosis. For that you would have to have laporoscopy (spelling?) which is minimally invasive surgery. I had it done, had bad side effects for a week after but apart from that it was fine so if you can cope with the side effects it's not a bad option.
As for switching pills, that is a good idea. I was on Microgynon first, then Yasmin (which made me very sick for a week so I stopped taking it) and am now on loesterin. I realise different pills work for different people but I've heard some very bad things about Yasmin and its effects on health so I'd recommend going for something else. Don't be afraid to go back to your doctor if you think a pill brand isn't working for you, it might take time to find the right one.
I'll post back here in a week or so and tell you how the latest pains are, if there's any change. Til then, I wish everyone the best of luck and a Merry Christmas!

As I am reading everyone's posts I noticed that we are all so different. Some of us are mom's and some aren't. Some of us are teenagers, and some are mature women. Many of you have been dealing with this pain for a long time, and many for just a few years. We all agree about the symptoms and the pain, but that's about it.
My background:
Mom of 2 - both natural births with above average blood loss
1 miscarriage
have always had heavy periods with clotting (even when I was running/training alot) unless on birth control pill - then they go down to average instead of heavy
I took pill for 7+ years before getting pregnant and then more in between pregnancies
I get about 17-20 days from when my period stops to when it starts again.
I am often a little anemic
I am not as healthy as I used to be and I need to lose about 12 - 15 lbs.
This pain is very new to me. It has only come on in the last few months. I woke up in the middle of the night a few months back in a lot of pain. I hurried to the bathroom and discovered I had started my period. In some ways it was similar to the miscarriage I experienced between baby #1 and baby#2. The main difference was a few very sharp pains in the anal area. That was the worst. I struggled through that and had to have a BM so the pain would let down. So I told myself it was bad to be constipated when you first start your period. I was really sore and it hurt to sit down the next day, but I had no more episodes.
In the few months between now and then the pain has come and gone. I haven't had it every time, or it has been more mild. Last night it got bad again. Once again it woke me up in the middle of the night. What did I do differently from last month? I have been recently taking iron pills to keep back anemia, but I wouldn't say I was constipated. In fact, I had a very soft stool last night and it didn't help reduce the pain at all. The pain makes me feel like I might vomit, does anyone else get that? The pain won't let down until I have a BM, and then it lets up enough for me to crawl back in bed. When I wake up in the morning it's gone. I have been fine all day but worried about tonight. This pain always come sin the first 24 - 36 hours of my period.
I do normally have some digestive issues and can get some painful gas. But I have been drinking one of those super fruit juices every day and most of my digestive problems are gone. So that confuses me about the painful BM and gas at night. What is my cycle doing to make things worse? No matter what som eo fyour doctors say, a strong pain like this can't be just normal monthly stuff for anyone. There has to be some sort of explanation. If it's not endometriosis, then must be something similar but the Dr.'s aren't skilled or motivated enough to find it. I haven't been to my OBGYN yet. I just got medical insurance back, so I will make an appt. soon. In the mean time, I would love to hear suggestions fo rmanagin fthe pain.
So far I have read that exercise and what you eat makes a difference. Can anyone tell me the best foods to eat and what foods to avoid?
One final note, after having baby#2 and the breastfeeding was done, I used to be able to feel exactly when i was ovulating. It was uncomfortable, but not bad. In the past year I stopped being able to feel that at all, even though my cycle kept going (although closer together). I wonder if that's related to this?

My problems started when i was 23,i was having a lot of pain in my lower back and stomach,i went to the doc and he diagnosed me with a kidney infection!! the pain continued to get worse for 2 weeks after hes diagnoses,so i went back barely able to walk,he examied my stomach and when he pressed down i screamed in pain!i was rushed onto hospital, where i had 5hrs surgery to remove a very large cyst on my ovary, also my fallipion tube was removed as well!! since then my gynae problems have not stopped but got worse,i have had surgery on my other ovary to remove cysts(small ones) erosion on my cervix loads of dnc's!!I am now 32 and another problem started with me when i was passing my bowel,i would cry in pain a week before my period and the week i would have them, went to the doc and said i had IBS,i asked for a second opinion because the pain felt like i was in labour(I have 2 children thank god),so i was on a waiting list for almost 1 and half years where i underwent surgery to find i have severe endometorsis and that it has spread onto my ovary (chocolat cysts)destroyed my fallipion tube and has grown onto my bowel, thank god i have 2 kids my chance of ever having any is none!! the surgery was ok the doc lasered off the endo but it grew back twice as quick,i am now waiting for my surgery for my bowel...i dont know what to expect with that....but one thing i do know is i will be getting a hysterectomy, because i cant handle the pain any more...I am gone very thin as well 5ft 5ins and 7st 12lb i was always a healthy 9 1/2 stone but it has just took to much out of me,
I eat very healthy girl, and there is no family history with this either!

I have had this for almost a year now, give or take a month. At first i didnt tell anyone because i was embarrassed.
Then when i finally did tell someone, they shrugged it off and said it was nothing.
I am one who stresses over my health all the time, but is terrified of the doctor. Every time i go they find something else
wrong with me. :-(
Anyways, i am a 20 year old girl, and i am already on birth control... do i maybe need to change my birth control?
I desperately want children one day, and it kills me when i read up on Endometriosis and find out its possible to not
be able to conceive. The surgical procedures also scare the hell out of me. Im hoping it is not endometriosis..
are there any other possibilities?
Thanks to all who has shared their stories and experiences.

First of all, is even though you say you are scared of doctors I recommend you go to a gyno right away and ask them to book you in for an ultrasound. This is the first step in identifying if you might have problems in that area. It can't definitely confirm or rule out endo but it's a first step.
If you're worried about the endo though, a laporoscopy is the only real way to find out if you have it. I had it done over summer and it's a little bit daunting, but not too bad. Basically you just go into hospital and have to do the whole changing into a stupid hospital gown c**p and then you'll just be taken into a theatre, given an IV which injects a general anaesthetic and before you know it you'll be out like a light and wake up again an hour later. Will warn now that there are some side effects to the surgery, such as a bit of bleeding and some chest and shoulder pains. Your choice if you think it's worth it but I think I would rather take the surgery and know for definite if I do/don't than sit in bowel-pained limbo.
If your pain is very bad and prevents you from going to the toilet, it might be beneficial to seriously up your fibre intake. I have fibre capsules which I take for the week before a period in the hope that if the stool is a bit softer, it'll hurt less as it passes through the sphincter. (I find I sometimes get a stabbing pain into the sphincter muscle.. anyone else experience this? :/) Alternatively, I have taken a mild laxative for that week to try to help as well.
Exercise may benefit some people.. personally, I can't even walk when I'm in that much pain let alone exercise but if it's working for some people, can anyone post advice on what kind of exercise they do and how much?
As far as changing birth control - what are you on at the moment? It might be worth a try going to your GP or doctor and asking for a different one (I am on Loesterin atm.)
This is a looooong post.... I think I just like having somewhere to talk openly about this stuff! It's hardly the sort of thing I can bring up in detail with the people I know But yes, just passing on some tips I've picked up. I hope you find something that works for you.
