My class believes there is nothing wrong with downloading copyrighted material or plagiarism.

We did an activity on understanding the importance of cyber ethics today. I gave them the 10 Commandments of Technology Use and they said that none of the rules were important or needed to be followed.
This is such a big deal!
Plagiarism is just so wrong, especially when you can use the work of other people if done properly.
You just have to document it and give credit to the owner/writer of that work being used...borrowed...quoted...whatnot!
I knew people who got booted out of FSU for plagiarism and I think that should be the norm for all.

have them write a paragraph in class about something from their own experience. bring it back to them published as your own material, giving them absolutely no credit for doing that work. Then tell them there will be a test on that same material the next day.

Plagiarism was grounds for failure - no appeal permitted - in high school and college. A big, fat zero.

I like this, but i would alter the assignment. Give the entire class an assignment, but personalize it without telling the class. Have half the class write a short paper, sort of like the above assignment. They turn in the assignment. Then you can make a copy of those papers and have the other half of the class turn those in as their own work and get the same grade (perhaps a fake grade, but don't tell them that) as the original and see if they still think it is fair.

In a similar vein, I recently heard on the radio that a national poll of high school students revealed that close to 90% of high school students think it is okay to download copy righted music from the internet. Apparently there are a lot of parents these days who are not communicating, or more likely, not modeling the proper values to their children. Where I work, burglary of motor vehicles is our biggest property crime. Given the number we catch and arrest and the fact that the number of burglaries really spike during the summer months and during the holidays when school is out, it appears that kids 17 and under are committing most of these offenses.

They do believe that! It shocks me. I have also failed far too many students on papers this year who cut and pasted them directly from the internet. They are then indigent when they get zeros and no make up work is given. Plagiarism is my pet peeve. I hate it. I wouldn't have given you the assignment if I didn't want you to learn something. I actually had one student argue that she shouldn't get a 0 because I didn't specifically tell her she couldn't cheat on the paper. (despite the fact she signed the class rules)
Then again, I'm amazed at how many think it's no big deal to get arrested in H.S.

No make up work? Sounds like the unemployment office is kind of crowded, what with all the indigent students....

Libby had to write a paper on the origins of the internet, and we printed stuff off the internet to do it. I don't know how often in those few days she was working on the assignment that I stressed the importance of putting things in your own words, and using quotes around words that are not her own. She gets it.

Same thing with d/l'ing music off the internet. I used to do that, but decided that since I'm trying to raise honest kids, we'd have to stop. Libby understands the reasons for not doing it, and now Will does too as he just asked about it the other day.

College is very strict about the whole plagiarism thing. My Theology prof was an absolute nut over it though, to the extreme. I had to define things (out of the text book) and even though we both know where I'm getting the definition, she wanted me to cite it every single time. I get it, I understand that she's trying to teach us something, but I found it to be a bit over the top. For essays, citing is necessary. For defining "athiest" or explaining a concept in the book?? Luckily my profs this semester realize that yes, I'm actually reading the textbook and yes, the words in the textbook will be in my answers, but I'm not trying doing this whole "in my opinion {insert paragraph of sociology here}." I have never been so happy to finish a class as I was after Theology.

I don't have the experience to spot plagiarism.
Even though I don't have much experience teaching(in my first year), I do notice the difference in attitude compared to when I was in HS just 5 years ago.

but I bet you do have the experience of knowing how your students would write something as opposed to the professionals in the field. You prolly also know your content, and as you get familiar with the resources your students use, you will know when they are citing with credit, or plagiarizing.

---> me. I really need to pay more attention to what I'm typing. Spelling, not my strong suit, but word confusion...bad! I can't imagine what I was thinking (other than not clearly)

Maybe it's time for a campaign...get the troops assembled. Let's push for a spellchecker! Sure, it'd be lots of work, lots of hassle. But if we don't have to do it, well, what are we waiting for?
(waiting for the groundswell of support...........)
