Just adding my story here. I started having this problem a little over a month ago, at work (I do manual labor). It started out as a tingling below my right shoulder blade, very subtly. It's not considerably worse now, but occasionally does get slightly painful, like I'm on the verge of getting a cramp in the muscle. Sometimes when I'm sitting for extended periods of time (like driving) it's like I can feel my shoulder blade pushing up against my skin; not painful, just very odd and uncomfortable. So far it's only been annoying, but I'm worried it will eventually turn into something that's a bigger issue.
I went to my doctor and stumped her with it. She prescribed me Valtrex, in case it was shingles (which I doubted and she seemed skeptical of as well) as well as Gabapentin (a nerve calmer) and a muscle relaxer. None of them seem to do too much, though I only took the relaxer a couple of times because it makes me extremely sleepy. It seems to occur less when I'm more sedentary and become worse when I'm moving around (exercising or working, or even extended standing and walking). Doctor also gave me a reference for a neurologist and a physiotherapist, though I have not visited them yet.
Not sure what I'm gonna do at this point. Notalgia Paresthetica seems like it fits the bill pretty well, but that's not very satisfying since it doesn't seem to have a clear treatment or prognosis. I figure I'll give the therapist a try, and see about working out a bit to try and even out the muscles in my upper body. I should mention that I've been dieting and have lost about 40 lbs. in the months leading up to having this issue, so I suppose it's possible that my body just has to adjust to working as a smaller dude.
Anyway...yeah, it's kind of frustrating to have an issue that's difficult even to accurately describe to others. At least it's nice to have this thread to at least know I'm not the only crazy one. We should start a support group or something, haha.

I have been dealing with this for the past 9 years. I've only brought it up twice to my doctors, but no one seems to have an answer. Mine is localized on the left side of my back, below my scapula toward the spine. All anyone has mentioned to me is that it's probably not back cancer, and it might be some kind of nerve problem.

I've had the same problem for sometime and a little pressure, researching the internet can be really scary. I used to smoke for about 16 years, stopped now for over 15 years,. I think I need to have my lungs checked just in case!

Hi, I'm the guest that posted about doing pull-ups (back excercises) to get rid of the tingling on page 20 of this thread. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced success doing this. The tingling, worm crawling feeling under my left shoulder blade still has not returned, and it's great! The tingling was really driving me crazy for months. It may take a few weeks before you notice a difference, but give it your best effort.

Meh, first time here, was just looking up this tingling to see what it may be. Not really concerned about it but it's in the same spot as mentioned almsot every post here. Just above my middle back and on the right side. It's been happening to me for almost 5-6 months now and it just comes and goes sometimes not at all in a day and sometimes every hour or so. It just lasts maybe 2 mins-10 mins and tingles. It doesn't itch, there's no skin discoloration, the only thing is the random tingling. It doesn't get in my way or anything I can still play ball, tennis, golf, swim, run, work-out, etc.. It has never hurt in any way. I was just curious to find out what it was.

I've also been experiencing the same exact thing in the exact same spot as almost everyone else. I have yet to go see the doctor about it. After reading the comments about weight lifting, it did occur to me that it started happening a few weeks after moving to our new place. I was doing a lot of lifting at that time and actually injured my lower back and hip. I guess maybe the pain localized higher up for some reason. I will definitely try doing some back exercises for it though. Thanks for everyone's stories...at least I'm not alone :)

it frustrates me how doc's just throw us on things, or label us with really really knowing what it really is, and just taking chances with us as guinea pigs, for one, if u have some that isn't singles and ur being treated for it, they better hope it is that, and not wasting time when it could be something else, and if that is the case then you'l your self a fine cheque due to mal practice.. im scared, i have a numb spot on my back, bout size of hand been about eight moment, i've lost half my weight in under a year.. i have migraines more then not, and my last migraine i couldn't see outta my eyes, usually only on left side, not this last one, and i was throwing up all night, migraine was on right side, which is odd, but couldn't see outta my left eye, and then migraine lessened after all the puking??!? isn't that weird? shouldn't it have been worse? and my spine was killing me... so ya this sucks, and its scary and the last thing we need is to be guinea pigs.. its hard enough..as it is.. its not them walkin in our shoes with our responsibilities.. so i guess we need to have faith God will protect us, and what ever is in his will, is in his will for a reason=-) take care, hope it all gets better for you all and myself, one last thing, i don't want to scare anyone, but it scared the poop outta me, i told a woman at the pharmacy what was going on with me, she said she has the same thing, but was just diagnosed with stage four cancer=-( sooo sad, and soo scary... and she told me she knows a woman that has same symptoms but no cancer, but has a brain hemorrhage... so regardless, of what it may be, the point is our bodies are trying to tell us something, and we must listen to them...they are symptoms, signal to whats really going on.. so best of luck best wishes, Merry Xmas, and i 'll pray for you all=-) xox and again im not trying to scare anyone, im just trying to be real, and we dont need anymore p***y footing nor do we have time to waist... we need to do all the footwork readless of our fears or pain or sickness.. sooner we find out , the better right?=-)

I am so surprised to see so many people having this, I thought I was the only one in the world experiencing this strange feeling. Almost like when your leg is just starting to fall asleep. Mine is left hand side of my back. I went to my PCP today and I told him about it, I thought he would laugh it off but he said it was strange and wanted me to start noting when it happens, am I sitting or standing, is my back turned a certain way, did I bend over prior to the tingling, what was the temperature. The funny thing was is as soon as I left his office and sat in my car it happened. I am going to track like doctor told me to, is anyone else trancking when this happens to them and if so have you come to any conclusions as to what may be causing it?.

Me too. Just below left shoulder blade toward the spine. Sometimes I feel it in a wider horizontal area, sometimes as far as to the right of my spine but always at the same place vertically. Never hurts, just tingles and maybe burns a bit. Noticed it after I started lifting heavy weights in the gym (specifically deadlift and barbell rows.) My doctor also thought shingles, but I just had them 2 years ago and after 3 months of sensation there is no rash.
It goes away quickly when I pay attention to my posture. If i'm not aware my head tends to pitch forward when I stand which puts pressure on my spine, around the shoulder blade area. Standing straight and relaxed with arms to my sides, and/or sitting against the back of my chair makes it go away quickly.
