Hi, I'm 15 years old and female. About a year ago, I thought I had ringworm, but it turned out to be PR. The actual itchy circle went away, but now I have these disgusting rashes all over my body that have been there for several months. There are discolorations all over my body as well. My skin is ALWAYS dry and flaky, and it never seems to go away. I use Eucerin for the dryness, but I have to use it daily or else my face and body will be itchy and flaky. I want the rashes to disappear! Are there any medicines that are over the counter that can make the rashes go away?? And help would be appreciated!

I contracted this a couple of weeks ago... And i originally thought it was a form of acute urticaria (hives).

I displayed many of the symtoms of PR, with a herald patch, and the following rash following the contours of my skin.. it did not touch my neck or face, nor did it touch my lower legs or forearms.

I tried all forms of Anti histamines, both receptors and antagonisers - No effect

Light paraffin treatment such as Oilatum bathing and aqeous cream - No effect

Multiple Hydrocortisteroids such as trimuvate and Euhmax - No effect

Moisturisers such as Dermol500 and other tested natural moisturisers - No effect

Aloe Vera extract ointments and showergels - Very good effect for neutralising itching and flakiness

The best thing?   TANNING!!!!!   I went to the sunbeds for two sessions..after the first 6 minute session they had nearly all disappeared thanks to the UV-B rays. I then waited for two days before going back to the tanning salon for a stand up booth for ten minutes, EVERYTHING HAS GONE!!! no more flakiness.. no more rash no more anything :D !!

Plus i have a lovely deep tan  :P

There are obvious health risks associated with Sun beds, and the treatment may not be for all.. but multiple people have had the same results as me on here from going to the salon.

If you do give it a try, and have never previously tried sunbeds, please make sure you go no longer than 6 minutes and do not go into a stand up booth.. you will fry and although you'll notice a marked improvement in your PR condition.. the burning and health effects could be detrimental to your overall health and wellbeing.

Hello
Unfortunetly I have had it once already and am going through it again. It is quite unbearable and itchy. I have found that if you put a cream with menthol in it, it helps sooth the itch
Im just curious as to other treatments that work??

Thanks for the tips on sunlight. I live in Surinam so luckily I have a lot of that.

I guess my immune system was weak because it appeared in a very aggressive manner. Within four days my whole body was covered in a horrible rash (fortunately my face is still clear).

I have the condition for over a week now and I am so glad that the worst part is already over! Everyday the patches are significantly smaller, less redness and less bumpy (hope that I say this right). I can still tell that this is a very aggressive condition and hard to beat. But I'm really seeing positive results very quickly. So I wanted to share this with you guys. I did the following things:

- I went in the sun (as nude as possible:) every other day. This almost immediately cleares up the redness.

- I soaked up fresh neem leaves in boiling water and let it cool of. After showering (with babysoap or some other mild soap) I rinsed my whole body with the 'neem leaves water' while rubbing it in. I let my body air dry.

- I took lots of vitamine C, Echinaforce, multi vitamins and fluids. Three times a day I drank a cup of 'neem leaves water'... not a nice taste but I was willing to try almost anything.

I really hope this works for you guys. And please don't let this thing get your mood down or your stress levels up, since your immune system has to fight hard on this thing!

Hello all,

I first noticed the spots on April 19th...first around my lower right pelvic area. Then my left. Then a shoulder...then the other. Went to my dermatologist and was diagnosed with PR immediately. (I read that there may be symptoms that signal this is coming, such as sore throat. I had a sore throat and glands a week before this started. I also never noticed the infamous herald patch. I either didn't have one or mine was smaller than what others have gotten.) Thankfully I didn't itch much but I had no idea how to treat it. Started applying coconut oil to affected areas and spots on my shoulders went away quickly. Unfortunately, the rash did what it does and kept spreading. The worst it looked was on April 29th. My lower stomach was covered and now I had spots going up both sides of my body, up to my arm pits. I was also starting to itch a little. I tried fresh aloe vera gel for a few days and it didn't seem to help much. It's now 3 days later and I still have spots but no longer itch and they are drying and getting smaller. Here's what I did:

- Started taking echinacea pills shortly after rash began. I'm currently up to 2 a day. The bottle says not to take for more than 10 days straight so I'm going to follow instructions and stop in 2 days.

- As someone else said, don't stress out. Stress causes so many conditions to get worse and skin must be one of them.

- I drink orange juice daily, take a multivitamin, and a lot of water.

- Lukewarm showers

- Oatmeal bath!! Tried this at my itchiest and it helped IMMENSELY. They sell the packets in any drugstore. I bought the drugstore brand that was comparable to the Aveeno packets and it worked well.

- I've been putting Mometasone Furoate 0.1% cream on it for the past 2 days. It took care of the swelling and itchiness in one night. I had this cream already and my dermatologist suggested I try it to help reduce the rash. It definitely did help.

- I use an Aveeno cream for eczema on dry spots and a gentle body wash. I'm using Cerave.

- No exercising. Sweat and heat just make it worse.

- Because the rash was at its worse on my lower stomach, I came to the conclusion that low cut underwear can be an issue since it's constantly rubbing on that area. I've been using cotton boy shorts for the last couple of days since they fall higher, covering the rash and not falling right on it. Not sure if this helped but I was definitely more comfortable.

- Try to wear natural fiber clothing only...cotton is your best friend. I've been using 100% cotton camisoles under my shirts for the last few days.

- Ladies, if possible for you, go braless if you notice the rash moving up that way, or find an alternative. I started getting spots right under my arm pits, where a bra normally covers, as well as right under my breasts. Again, I don't think wearing a tight, constricting bra over a rash all day is the best. I've been using bandeau tops and camisoles with appropriate tops over them.

That's it. I have not tried the tanning trick but I think (or hope) that what I've done so far has stopped the rash from spreading further and now it's just time for everything to heal. I will start applying coconut oil in a few days to help the skin repair process.

I hope this helps somehow! Good luck everyone.

I initially noticed my herald patch on my outer thigh unlike anything I've read. I went to the doc an she told me I wasn't dying but I had PR. The rash was very mild only itching by the patch which I discovered towards December 2013. Now in May 2014 the rash is horrendous. Being that I'm African American the spots are extremely dark, miserably itchy and constantly peeling. I'm covered on my back, stomach, arms upper and lower, chest, neck, groin and my precocious bum. I have spots on my feet thighs and one huge spot on my leg. I take benadryl throughout the day breaking them in half because a whole makes me very sleepy n I pair it with something less strong like zertyc. I recently tried the sun method I layed out on the back of the truck and it helped. Creams and such don't help but cold baths works for me n the sun does I strongly suggest moisturizing because it hurts like hell when the skin dries out. Yes I feel like a freak and I have break downs and feel defeated but something I noticed that's helps, is trying to maintain your normal routine I was starting to look exactly how I felt miserable. Day by day I tried getting dressed combing my hair and even wearing clothes that I stopped wearing because  I was so ashamed of my skin. Today the rash is still severe covering over50% of my body but I hope this helps someone deal with PR the way so many of these other stories have.

I suffered from Pityriasis 2 summers ago and it was the worst experience of my life! It was a very extreme case and covered 3/4 of my body, it was very itchy especially at night.  I tried everything to get rid of it but nothing worked, until.... I read online somewhere about oil of oregano and thought i'd give it a shot... I used it in 2 ways, orally 3 times a day I would put 3-5 drops under my tounge and also i would dilute about 15 drops in tbsps of cocomut oil... I did this religiously for a week and the rash started to go away!!!  Thank god, I was getting very depressed and would not leave my house as the rash was all over my arms and neck as well everywhere else from my knees up... this might not work for everyone but I know how desparate you become when you get this nasty virus and I hope that this will help someone else too.... also I went to my cottage for a few days and soaked in the cold lake water at night, this relieved the itch without making it worse (which is what happened with the water at home because of all the chemicals in it!)

Good Luck :)

I am a 21 year old female. I first discovered one oval shaped spot right under my butt on the back of my leg. it was raised with skin around it . i didnt think anything of it and used ezema cream. the next day i had it all down the backs of my upper legs and they were all different shapes and sizes. VERY red. not itchy at all though. i went to my dermatologist and they said it was psorisis and took a skin biopsy to make sure. the biopsy came back as being a type of ezema. but after 10 days of the rash not going , and spreading to my back and stomach . they diagnosed it as PR . I have had it about 6 weeks now and its gone from my stomach and back but the backs of my legs and butt are covered still , and painful. ive been going tanning for a week now and it seems to fade but then will be red again the next day. hot showers are the worst thing EVER and make it so much worse. still hoping that time and tanning will fade this :( AND its right in time for summer. PERFECT.

Guys honestly all you have to do is go to a tanning bed. Do it for 10 mins for three days straight. Your probably gonna get burnt but this stuff cant handle the uv rays and it goes away within a week. Will take additional week and a half to completely be gone but will go through a peeling phase before it dissapears completely.

Thank you guys for this post. Now I feel less like a freak. At first when I noticed something on my left knee, they told me it was ringworm although I started getting little red bumps on my back. I used anti-fungal cream for two weeks only to learn it was not ringworm since it was getting worse and worse. I tried hydro-cortisone and still nothing. Recently saw the doctor again and she told me this looked like P.R. Nothing helps, but if it's really bad I can get a steroid shot or medicine which I have not tried. I've been told cool baths and staying moist helps. I'm using cetaphil as a lotion every night but the itching is unbearable. It's probably been about 3-4 weeks since sight of the "herald patch" on my leg and I swear even though there are some that's getting better, more are appearing. Please tell me this eventually goes away!

I just bought this cream and also showered with the skin healing oatmeal shower gel. I even used it to wash my hair. In how long did this get rid of it do you remember?

I went to a doctor. I knew it was PR and I was fusterated that he didnt know what it was. I reluctantly took the prescription I was given for ringworm. It was Lotrisone. I bought it and less than 12 hours later my rash cleared up. I also stopped showers completely and just took a cold sponge bath and tried to stay from overheating since that helps alot. Hope this helps.
