My 13 year old daughter had pityriasis rosea which started last September 2013.

She had very bad case and then when the small bumps started peeling, she developed a red blotchy rash on lower legs. We took her to 2different dermatologists and after three biopsies, we still ont have a true diagnosis. The most recent dermatolidid press prescribe strong steroid creme.it went away for awhile but bow has returned. Has anyoout ever been through this? My daughter is feeling hopeless with this purpura rash on legs with summer fast approaching.

I am on week #4 and the most helpful thing has been aloe vera. My daughter takes the pulp from the leaves and places it into a blender which creates a paste otherwise it's a gooey mess. I then apply it onto the body and it immediately reduced itching, was cooling, and healing could be seen each day. It is incredible and I would suggest this to anyone with PR. Also, stay hydrated and the calamine btw really dried my skin. Witch hazel onto the spots was also helpful.

If you have found this discussion thread about Pityriasis Rosea, by now, you probably have a good idea on the background of the condition. I am on week four and have had about enough of this! From reading so many different posts and experiences online, I felt like I was going in circles, just trying every considerable product and idea out there... I am sure you probably are too, so I will keep this short and sweet.

Here is what I tried (and it didnt work for me):

Hydrocorizone - only made it worse due to the moisture

Aveeno Anti Itch Lotion (Calamine, which is a mixture of  zinc carbonate and ferric oxide, along with Pramoxine, which is an analgesic to numb the itchiness) - this product too had a similiar effect as the hyrdocortizone, as it trapped moisture underneath my bra and clothes.

I found that the moisture was actually not good for the condition as it worked against itself and caused more itchiness.

Head and Shoulders - I used the shampoo as my body wash as suggested my many others. Not sure if it has helped much, however after one use, I noticed certain spots starting peeling, so I started to feel some hope. However, this does not aid much with the itch.

So probably like you, I have read from many others experiences that they found "tanning" to have a positive affect on the condition. I have always been against tanning, especially when my skin is not in its best condition. I resorted to this treatment after finding a few legitimate websites proving that this could possibly be a solution.

So, yesterday, I had my first session at the tanning salon and found that there is definitely a good response... not GREAT, but good. I see an improvement and I did not wake up to find any new rashes or spots, or anything bigger than what it was. In fact, I think the number of spots have declined a bit, and the coloring of the rash is lighter (except when i scratch of course :)) And I see a lot more peeling! So that definitely a reason to celebrate.

I know tanning has its own complications, so I plan to try no more than 4 or 5 sessions and moisturize the c**p out of my skin with lavendar lotion AFTER I am cured.

FYI If you are wondering, I went in for 6 minutes yesterday, in a UVA tanning bed, with no lotion or oils. I will go in for my 2nd session today and hopefully I will see more results, as sources do say, most of the results occuer atfter 2 or 3 sessions.

I will keep you guys updated!! -EBUHP

I was diagnosed with PR about 2 years ago. I read online of people using head & shoulders to help get rid of the embarrassing red patch marks. I mixed approx 40% head & shoulders with approx 60% body lotion and applied to the affected areas twice daily AFTER I got out of the shower in the evening and in the morning before work. Doing this made the red spots almost all nearly dissappear in about 4 days. I did this as opposed to using head & shoulders in the shower to give the active ingredient plenty of time to work on the rash instead of rinsing off in the shower. The lotion helps keep the soap from drying out your skin and making it itch. If you're on this forum, I don't have to tell you how awful the red spots look so I hope this helps. It may be worth noting that this worked very well (for me) without the use of a tanning bed as I've read others mention.

I had Pitiriasis Rosea in March 2014 and beat it less than a week after making the diagnosis. Here's my story.

I noticed a red spot on my chest and thought it was a fungal infection so I used dandruff shampoo on it. The dandruff shampoo had no effect, and several days later, a bunch of red spots appeared around my tummy and pubic hair.

This freaked me out a good deal so I began self-diagnosis using the internet. It took about 3 hours for me to rule out everything besides PR. The keys to my diagnosis were 1) I had a single big spot matching the herald spot description a few days before the outbreak of spots, 2) The spots themselves matched the pictures and description of small red ovals, and 3) I had been keeping a night time schedule and sleeping during the day.

I made the diagnosis about a week and a half after first noticing the herald patch. It was very important to me to get the spots away from pubic hair because I had just started dating somone and did NOT want them to see these spots on me. So I began a serious change of lifestyle plan to beat this skin disease, consisting of:

- Sun-bathing. I have a nice backyard and it was spring in Texas so i did it in the real sun, and without any clothes on. A tanning salon would be good and comprehensive too.

- Waking up in the morning and sleeping at night instead of during the day. I'm fairly convinced that part of the reason I came down with this disease is I was living a night schedule and working at night. I think I was running a sunlight deficiency all winter.

- Cut out tobacco. I had been smoking a couple packs per week even though I'd been trying to quit. Avoiding tobacco was included in the plan to beat PR.

- No gluten. This may or may not have helped beating PR, but I cut out breads and beer out of my diet.

- Walking around the house with no clothes. This was just a way to let my skin breath and get some light throughout the day.

- Showers with water temperature that is not very hot, and use of coconut and aloe based bodywashes on my skin.

After my first day of sunbathing, I could already see the spots decreasing in intensity. I sunbathed again 2 days later, and after that I had basically beaten PR.

Good luck to you all :)

Did it cure itching or does it make it go away?

hello everyone,

I am three weeks into having PR and the spots are fading and almost gone! I was so upset and nervous about this rash and almost obsessive about it. I tried Neem oil which stunk but seemed to work and tried to stay healthy lots of water and veggies and vitamins. cool showers helped as well and i bought a eucerin cream tube formulated for eczema which I really think is also helping. Anyways try not to stress about it go lie in the sun and read a book and try to relax. it goes away, its not painful and it has a low chance of recurrence.

Diagnosed with PR yesterday, wedding is in 10 days ... OH NO.

Going to the sunbed today - how long should I go on there for? Wish me luck! At least I am on leave from today and on beach vacation from Friday through to the wedding day. I'll need all the luck in the world to not have lesions all over my chest in my wedding dress. So unfair!

Thanks for all the good advice on this website - it was a relief to find it.

I am a male 24 y/o. I had PR first 9 months ago and it lasted 6 months. There is nothing a Dr. can offer you to help. There is an easy and effective solution (you will see results in days). UVB light will get rid of PR. Unfotunately, I am having a second episode of PR in a year, which I am told is unusual. Doctors do not suggest sun exposure because UVB is damaging to the skin. I am not a doctor and this is not a medical opinion, but if you hate the rash as much as I do go get some sun of UVB light from tanning. If you are hoping for a miracle fix there is one. Sun or UVB light. I had hundreds of large spots all over my skin and it disappeared in a week. Goodluck.

Update : I got rid of the rash in all visible areas before the wedding, and the rash was completely gone within 3 weeks. Regime : 10 mins of sunbaking (Qld beach) morning and night (keeping an eye on the UV ratings to make sure there was some UV but not extreme levels), swim in salt water after sunbake session, lots of moisturiser and doctor-prescribed cream, gluten/alcohol free diet, soap-free bodywash, cold showers, avoid getting hot and sweating, and most importantly, rest and relaxation. I don't know if all of these factors made a difference, but this is what I did.

Ive had this for 9 months, no sign of it going away. I use a cortisone cream, it fades, but comes back as bad as ever in just a few days without the cream. Im losing hope. I cant take much more.

Thank you so much! I recently read this and got some for my husband who had been suffering from PR for 3 months and was in such a mess. It wasnt even diagnosed correctly. The rashes showed good results in two days - we are now day 4 and it's healing so well! Thank you so much, I feel so lucky to have read this and helped him. He used liquid BURDOCK - 2ml x three times a day. Apparently its renowned for cleaning the blood and skin conditions. Don't hesitate - but buy it from a reliable source.
