I ended up not even doing the ultrasound .. it was a 4 day normal period and I have not had another. In speaking with the orthopedic doc - he seemed very skeptical that this would cause a period - I think otherwise , I too will not have steroids again - in addition - it didn't even help with the pain! I think it takes our bodies awhile to adjust to this new phase of life !! Best of luck to you!
Ladies most of you were all like me terrified at what might be the cause of this post menapausal bleeding . I also went all over the internet for fear of what it could be and was so relieved to see so many posts that were associated to shots of cortisone injections . I would be very happy if someone in the profesion could look into this and im sure many of you would also just for peace of mind , because the worry and stress to not only ourselves but our family is tremendous. I went through a very emotional time until i discovered this on Steady Health . Also like some of the ladies also said on here is cant be set in stone that this is the cause and it must be thoroughly investigated but at least it is a could be because of the cortisone injection and that gives hope to the cause . I am so happy that we found this site and we all have been able to get some relief from it . I just wish someone would take this concern of ours up and investigate it properly .
Kindest Regards to you all x
In 2001, after going without a period for ten months, I had cortisol shots in my lumbar region. Within two weeks I had a "period." i was 51. My doctor told me it was likely that it had "jumpstarted " my period. I had to wait another 12 months to be considered menopausal. In 2011, I had lumbar shots again with the same result at age 63. My Gynocologist did all the tests and a D&C with all normal results. I told her about the shots at the time, but was being thorough. Three weeks ago, I had another series and now I am spotting. I KNOW there is a connection! It makes me mad that this information is no more well known and discussed as a possible side effect!!
I think it would be so good if all of us on this site could find someone to research into this . Its so very important to us all . Its just finding someone in the health care profession to do it and take it on and reserch it thoroughly and give older women the peace of mind that we want .
Good evening. I have been post-menopausal for two years. Two weeks ago, I had a steroid injection in my arm (deltoid) because of a severe allergic reaction. The injection contained an immediate-acting and a long-acting steroid. Now, two weeks later, I have begun bleeding. Knowing the possible causes of post-menopausal bleeding, I was very concerned. I am working out of town, so I could not make an appointment with my doctor. I called my sister tonight and she knew that I was worried. She told me that she had read about the possible connection between steroid injections and post-menopausal bleeding. After reading your posts, I feel much less frantic about the bleeding, but I will follow up with my physician when I return home. Thank you for the information!
IIt am so pissed off at my doctor right now. I ended up in ER after the first injection, after second I called him crying, my hip is on fire, I have severe panic, insomnia, back pain is unbearable, hot flashes and cold sweats, fevers, GERD and uoset stomach, nausea and he won't prescribe anything to help me he said to go to primary care doc which I am tomorrow. If I get a period I'm really going to be pissed. He said NOTHING to me about these side effects.
I had a cortisone shot and I've been bleeding now for four weeks. So, it finally stopped after five weeks? This is the longest I've ever bled after a cortisone shot. Usually it's just 2 weeks.
i had a shot in my shoulder two and a half weeks ago and then yesterday i started bleeding,my last period was also 12 years ago.
I went to my gynocologist today after spotting for 2 days. I was really worried, thinking the worst. After I told her that I'd had back cortisone shots 2 weeks ago, she smiled and said "that's great!". I thought she meant that it was good that I got help for my back. Then she said that she's had patients who started bleeding after they had the shots. We're still doing an ultrasound and biopsy just to be sure, but she was pretty confident that the shots are my problem.
I have come to regard a cortisone shot as a D&C (dilation and curettage).
Hi, I am in the health care profession too. I am wondering though what did your doctor say about this r-ship b/w cortisone injections and spotting/bleeding? did he research it? my mom is 57 and post menopausal for 10 years and had a cortisone injection and bleeding/spotting the following week. Thanks.
I talked to my back doctor's nurse today about the bleeding and she said it's VERY normal. She said she wouldn't bother with the ultrasound and biopsy if it were her. I'm thinking I may skip it too.
I am so glad I found this forum!!!!
I just had a major debate with my GP. He said cortisone is a hormone that has NO relation to any of what we are complaining of.
I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder 8 days ago. The day after my varicose veins in my legs flared up as they only do the day before and day of my period. I am 42, sometimes I think I may be pre-menopausal. My periods are smack bang on 26-28 days. I am now on day 34, still no period and my legs are so bad I am going for an ultrasound today to check there is no DVT.
I am sorry, there is a DEFINITE link to cortisone & female hormones. My 1st injection I cried for a week (totally irrational) and had hot flushes on and off. All doctors said they have never heard of any of these side effects.
Now 2nd injection, my legs have flared as If Im getting my period but it still has not come?????
I have a holiday next month & I am none too happy that this has thrown my cycle haywire.
I am so upset that doctors look into a little book and just because its not documented they rule it out.
Look how many of us are here. How many have not put the cortisone shot as a reason to haywire hormones?
